How did Microsoft end up decisively honing in on the final form of the gamepad?
>>
They mashed together the DualShock and Dreamcast's controller.
>>
Oh sorry, I posted the wrong image

>>
>>12648128
It's simple as this. They just copied what worked.
GOAT console controller though.
>>
>>12648131
I unironically love all their weird directinput controllers, i miss those days of playing zsnes with your weird microsoft gamepad
>>
>>12648131

Man I hated the time when you couldn't find a PC controller without the fucked, mushy D-pads like those.
>>
>>12648157
I understand that take, but I was happy to play free SNES games without using the keyboard. It felt like i'd cheated the universe.
>>
>>12648159
It was the same for me with the Gravis Gamepad, which also had a mushy D-pad and strangely also came with a stick you could screw into it to play it like a mini arcade control, which amplified the problem tenfold. Shit was still kino to emulate with a controller on PC at the time.
>>
>>12648126 (OP)
they copied the final form and just made it legally distinct (worse)
>>

This. Using an offset analog stick is more comfortable than using an offset dpad like the Xbox has.

PS1 and PS2 controllers feel like hugging an anorexic woman. Xbox controller is thick and smooth. It actually feels good to hold.

doesnt exist, the best gamepad for a 3d game and a 2d game cannot be the same.

sure it can, see >>12648202

Wrong in what way?
Using a joystick for 3D games??

Sega placed its joystick correctly.
Nintendo placed its joystick correctly.
Microsoft placed its joystick correctly.
Sony kept its D-pad for 2D games.

The Xbox analog stick layout makes the most sense for games that use it.

>>
>>12648772

>>
>>12648202
I'll probably always prefer this layout. I played Xbox and Gamecube at my friends' houses, but I didn't own a console with asymmetrical sticks until like '05-'06 when I got my own GC. It's too ingrained at this point, from NES to PS3.

>>12648496
I cannot stand using a lower d-pad for extended periods of time like I can a stick, for some reason. I'm fine with left-over-right asymmetry, but the opposite will leave me feeling uncomfortable without fail. I think any platform that has a considerable amount of 2D or menuing games needs a d-pad up top, so the DS was a good move.
>>
Everyone kvetching ITT about the left d-pad/stick placement have probably used both extensively and barely noticed the difference, yet here they are trying to convince everyone that one way or the other is superior. This is called cognitive dissonance.
>>
Cory Delaminguez would say otherwise
>>
>>12648575
that's if 9/11 never happened
>>
Are people who complain about stick placement just less evolved or something? Like physically? Do they lack opposability in their thumbs or something? I have never felt discomfort from having to bend my thumb to touch a control stick like they seem to.
>>
>>12648813
Fully extend your thumb, move it around, notice how it doesn't move perfectly smoothly and clicks in and out of positions, now bend your thumb at a 90 degree angle and move it, notice how it moves smoothly without hindrance. It's that simple.
>>
>>12648842
It boggles the mind. I could switch between a PS2 and OG Xbox controller day by day and not miss a beat. I do like that the Xbox controller is so thick but the difference isn't that big a deal. I play something with the PS2 controller for 5 minutes and I've already stopped thinking about it.
Then again, 4chan would die overnight if not for the complaint threads.
>>
>>12648867
I'm not saying this couldn't be an issue for some people, but in most cases a minor adjustment to the way you hold the controller is all you need. Personally, I don't know how anyone can play with either controller centered on their lap. The extended handles are there so you can anchor the controller against your thigh, which gives you maximum control and minimizes the impact/reverberations from fast button presses.
>>
>>12648534
see, the problem with the dreamcast controller on full display. god i hate that controller.
>>
>>12648575
metroid... on dreamcast 2?
>>
>>12648602
that was a mistake, although putting them in the L4/R4 positions like the 8bitdo pro would be a step up
>>
>>12648575
why is there start/select on the top and on the side?
>>
>>12648126 (OP)
The final form of the gamepad are those where you can pop out the stick and the dpad and swap their positions whenever you want. Its a shame that modular concept seemingly died
>>
The duke and the S are both great but the dpad was absolute shit, anyone who used it as an emulation box knew this the moment they played older games on it.
>Ergonomics argument about the placement
Who fucking cares. People have been sperging about this shit for decades in either direction, when its just a matter of personal preference. Both are natural positions that people gravitate to one way or the other.
>>
>>12648740
Couldn't they have copied Sega's d-pad instead?
>>
Nothing beats the dualshocks. I really like the Dualshock 4, it's weighted just right.
I have an xbox controller on my lap though. They're cheap, only reason I have it.

STOP. LIKING. PLAYSTATION.
>>
>>12649787
They're trying to argue that Sony's thumbstick placement is unnatural, since it has your thumb at a different angle than most other controllers. Something that took people less time to adjust to than remembering the face button order for most people, but their tism doesn't allow them to adjust the directions their thumb moves. Its the same spacial retardation that prevents people from being able to use tank controls, they can't imagine not having a precalibrated due north.
>>
>>12649793
I appreciate you sharing your opinion because I get to address to retarded points at once. Just like tank controls noone is having a mental block over a stick placement and cant comprehend it. The argument has always been and will always be that the dualshock stick placement and tank controls are just objectively worse. Its that simple.
>>
>>12649808
>noone is having a mental block over a stick placement and cant comprehend it
Cope
>The argument has always been and will always be that the dualshock stick placement and tank controls are just objectively worse.
Considering its an opinion based argument, there is no objective standard. The reason people assume you're retarded or autistic is because you can't understand such a simple principle.
>>
>>12649808
I have an xbox series S in my hand right now.
Natural thumb position is on the d-pad. Apparently I hold the controller at an angle.
Dualshock is best.
>>
>>12649219

>>
>>12649793
>They're trying to argue that Sony's thumbstick placement is unnatural, since it has your thumb at a different angle than most other controllers
Then NES should be red because the right thumb is more horizontal than Sony's thumbs?
>>
>>12649831
Its specifically focused on the left thumb with autismal focus. The right thumb changes continuously and once the right stick is introduced many games start to make the default position on the stick rather than the face buttons so it kills their argument. The only way to take the argument as genuine is to assume they cannot stand having any variation in the direction they press their thumb with their orientation when moving. More likely its just argument bait shitposting though.

microsoft fully committing to ideal analog ergonomics made sense given their scant japanese support and focus on cutting edge western games.
the ps2 still having a very significant 2d niche with fighting games and other digitally controlled japanese genres it was reasonable to trade suboptimal analog placement for a usable dpad this paid off even more so with the retro indie boom in the seventh gen.
so you never need to shitpost about it again.

Take Dreamcast controller
Add a second stick

That was it.

Oh the DC controller still works natively on all Xbox's, if you run the gambit of daisy chaining adapters the Xbox will understand the inputs.
Test it for yourself.

I pick the gigachad, perfect form, shape.
Asymmetrical controller is an abomination, an affront to the laws of nature.

The playstation controller's design deserves credit for the console's success. It's the most successful retro console of all time because it got everything right, including the controller. Not only the design, but also very durable and robust. Mine still fucking works.

the select button and two extra face buttons forgotten
>>
>>12652348
that's because the shoulders on gamecube controllers are triggers *and* buttons.

pressure sensitive, long travel triggers, then a clickable button at the end of the travel. not many games fully utilized this functionality, but the ones that did were fucking great (like rogue leader).
>>
>>12656564
Nintendo used to make cool controllers. Sad.
>>
>>12648126 (OP)
They deliberately broke the DirectInput implementation on their cheap, PC compatible controller to force Xinput.
DirectInput on the 360 pad scrambled the buttons, unified the triggers into a single axis and cut rumble, all of which was fixed in 3rd party drivers, so it's not like this was a hard limitation.
With the limitations of Xinput being tailored exactly to the 360 controller and rebinding on ports becoming increasingly broken and lazy, there just wasn't any room for anything else without using third party tools, so most people picked up 360 controllers to play broken games.

Xbox was lucky that had a second team working on the controller S for Japan so they only had to ship the Duke for under a year.

They copied off Sega who copied off Nintendo and then commissioned a caucasian ergonmics team to improve it, and then iterated from there. There's no better controller feel than Xbox one. It's like holding my own penis.
