Established anime director Goro Taniguchi believes Japan’s increasingly sanitized society is fundamentally changing the anime industry, arguing that stricter social expectations are discouraging originality and even pushing talented creators into other fields.
Speaking during a lecture at Keio University, Taniguchi said Japan has become a much more “sanitized” society than it was in previous decades, and this shift has affected both the kinds of stories that get made and the willingness of creators to take risks:
“As society becomes increasingly sanitized, creators become more hesitant to depict things that might invite criticism.”
He believes this trend is having consequences beyond individual productions, discouraging talented people from remaining in the anime industry altogether:
“There are people who think, ‘If I’m going to have to worry this much about what I can and can’t do, I’d rather create something else.'”
Taniguchi explained that modern production schedules and the prevalence of single-cour anime have made it much harder for younger staff to develop under experienced mentors:
“With the current production environment, it’s difficult for people to properly inherit skills from their seniors.”
As a result, he believes the industry’s overall creative capabilities are at risk of declining over time. Taniguchi also expressed concern that original anime projects are becoming less common, with more studios relying on adaptations of manga and light novels.
According to him, creators working on adaptations increasingly function more like arrangers than original composers, making it harder for the industry to cultivate people capable of creating entirely new worlds and stories.
While Taniguchi acknowledged that adaptations are an important part of the industry, he argued they cannot become the only path forward if anime hopes to continue evolving creatively.
Honestly i’d say its more the western woke and lgbt activists they keep letting in that is ruining both anime and videogames over there. Look at square enix as a prime example, they are completly compromised and infected at this point and it shows in the games they make if you compare them to older ones before they got infected by the rot. In some cases inserting that woke and lgbt stuff destroys games and ruins studio’s, Bioware and the makers of the Saints Row 1 remake come to mind. Its nothing but a cancer to anything it touches and it harms anything its put into, sadly these activists have infected it deep and western gaming may never recover again. They need to fire and replace the people at the top that allowed this stuff to happen, THEN replace the ones below them to truly cut out the cancer woke and lgbt activists cause. Till then, the west is pretty much screwed and japan is going down that same path as its letting them in.

Japan used to be a niche, underground art form that took bold and brazen risks like showing extreme violence, gore, smoking, nudity and sex in the past that made anime the powerhouse that it is today. But now you can barely if not rarely see ANY of that outside of hentai and ecchi. The state of the anime medium has fallen greatly in the woke, “clean” modern era, and it isn’t what as it used to be back then.
