Welcome to Casuarina Street Primary School and thank you for visiting our website.

Casuarina Street Primary School would like to acknowledge the ancestral lands of Katherine’s aboriginal people. We acknowledge that we are on country and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

Let’s begin by looking at our school vision:

We strive to achieve”
Learners at CSPS have an embedded belief that they are capable of achieving success. Learners are able to articulate their goals and devise a plan to achieve them.”

This CSPS vision guides us in all that we do here at Casuarina Street Primary School. We have amazing staff who contribute greatly to the vision of our school, continuously improving and working towards ensuring that our students have success in their learning. Our parents support us and our students demonstrate the 4 school values of Pride, Respect, Responsibility and Inclusions throughout the year.

Casuarina Street Primary School is a growing and vibrant school located in the developing area of Katherine East with a current enrolment of 370 students. Our vision is that Learners at CSPS have an embedded belief that they are capable of achieving success. They are able to articulate their goals and to devise a plan to achieve them. CSPS is a Northern Territory School of Excellence and has been recognised for both its significant improvement in student outcomes and innovative practices. It is also one of 14 Independent Public Schools in the NT.

A large proportion of students at CSPS are part of the Australian Defence Force community located at RAAF Base Tindal. In addition, students attending CSPS identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. CSPS caters for a diverse range of learners including those with additional needs and those identified as being gifted and talented. A range of connections and initiatives place the school at the heart of the Katherine Community, with high levels of attendance and engagement.

As an Independent Public School CSPS we work closely with the CSPS Board and associated sub-committees to develop future strategic initiatives and to provide ongoing governance of the school structures and procedures.

Casuarina Street Primary School is located in the town of Katherine, 315km south of Darwin. Casuarina Street Primary School (CSPS) is located on Casuarina Street in Katherine East, Katherine. The school first opened in 1998 and our grounds contain four general learning areas, each with four classrooms and communal working spaces for additional work with students; as well as a library, multi-purpose hall and stage, canteen and single unit preschool set amongst well maintained grounds with a combination of shaded and open playing areas and outdoor facilities.

Casuarina Street School Values

As staff, students and parents we worked together to decide the four core values that they believed were important to them and to our school.

The four core values are

Pride      Respect     Responsibility      Inclusion

The Casuarina Street Primary School Positive Behaviours Matrix (SWPBS Policy) was created to clarify to the students the correct behaviours that should always be displayed in the different areas of the school. These behaviours are directly aligned with the school values, respect, responsibility, pride and inclusion. The matrix is displayed in various areas around the school yard, in common areas and in all classrooms. Teachers and students refer to the core values in daily practice and assembly.

Mrs Claire Stewart

My name is Claire Stewart. I am the new Defence School Mentor (DSM).

My role within the school is to make the transition for you and your child/children as smooth as possible and to assist you with any concerns you may have about their educational, emotional, or social needs.

I have worked in Early Education for over 20 years and as a spouse of a Defence Force member for over 15 years. I am aware of the hardships and sacrifices that are placed upon Defence families and understand that moving schools or family being away can be quite daunting for children.

If I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me on (08) 8973 3800 or via email

defencementor.csps@education.nt.gov.au.

I look forward to meeting you.

What does a Defence School Mentor (DSM) do?

A DSM is a liaison between parents, teachers, children and the school.

Who does the DSM help?

The DSM helps and supports all Defence children at the school should they seek or require assistance.

Why do we have DSM’s in Schools?

Sometimes children have difficulties making new friends as well as understanding and adjusting to the routines of a new school. The DSM will assist children and family become part of the school community.

The DSM will answer any questions about the school and link families to the right person to provide help and assistance.

A Defence School Mentor is not a teacher but is a member of the school team.

Some points to remember…

When a family member is absent from home please contact me. I am here to assist your child and give them support throughout times of change.

If your child is experiencing difficulties settling in, finding friends, friendship issues, or any difficulties while at CSPS, please contact me and I can assist.

When posting occurs please advise our school ASAP so we can assist with the transition and prepare leaving packs.

DSM’s can provide information on Defence Education Assistance (DEA) programs like tutoring and counselling.

Wellbeing programs will be run throughout the year for children who experience a parent away for long exercises and/or deployments.
