Trump slams Iran’s ‘foolish violation’ of ceasefire plan

Iran launched drone attacks at ships in the Strait of Hormuz and struck one vessel, the president said in a social media post.

President Donald Trump blasted Iran on Friday for attacking a ship traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”

The president said in a Truth Social post that Iran had sent at least four drones to attack ships in the strait, adding that the U.S. “knocked down three other drones.” One ship was struck, the president said, but was able to “proceed on its way.”

The attack presents an additional strain on the precarious ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Opening the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil trade passes, for transit was one of the key tenets of the Memorandum of Understanding signed last week.

Trump did not refer explicitly to when the attack from Iran took place. But the International Maritime Organization, a United Nations-backed group, said Thursday it would pause its evacuation plan for ships that have been trapped in the strait since fighting began after a ship was struck earlier in the day.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement that the ship that was attacked “did not transit under IMO’s evacuation framework.”

The U.S. and Iran exited the first round of negotiations earlier this week having made “encouraging progress,” according to Qatari and Pakistani mediators. However, continued Israeli strikes on Hezbollah forces in Lebanon have strained negotiations, with Iran insisting that the fighting must end on all fronts to ensure a peace deal.

One of the largest tasks ahead of the negotiations will be to find a permanent solution on the fate of Iran’s nuclear program. Vice President JD Vance said earlier this week that the U.S. remains adamant that Iran does not build a nuclear weapon, and promised the country would “fundamentally transform” its relationship with Iran if that becomes the case.
