The Legacy
The Herald of Liberty
Murray Newton Rothbard was born on March 2, 1926, in New York, the son of David and Rae Rothbard. From an early age he showed remarkable talent, excelling at Columbia University, where he studied mathematics and economics. It was through the Foundation for Economic Education that he encountered the ideas of Ludwig von Mises — a meeting that would shape his entire intellectual life. Reading Human Action (1949) led him to embrace a coherent and rigorous vision of a free economy.
In 1956, he completed his doctorate and began an extraordinarily fertile intellectual career. His work Man, Economy, and State (1962) became a landmark of economic theory, in which he developed a systematic analysis of how markets function and explored questions of capital, monopoly, and economic calculation.
By taking the logic of the free market to its ultimate conclusions, Rothbard formulated and systematised what would come to be known as anarcho-capitalism: the idea that all goods and services — including defence, justice, and security — can be provided voluntarily, without the need for a State.
Beyond his numerous contributions to the body of ideas of the Austrian School of Economics, he also distinguished himself as a historian and political philosopher. In works such as America's Great Depression and The Ethics of Liberty, he explained the failures of interventionist policies and developed the ethical foundations of a free society, grounded in the principle of self-ownership.
A tireless thinker and prolific author, Rothbard combined academic rigour with a strong ambition to influence the real world. He passed away on January 7, 1995. His legacy endures as one of the clearest and boldest defences of individual freedom.
The freedom of the individual is not only a great moral good in itself, it is also the necessary condition for the flowering of all the other goods that mankind cherishes.

Still Have Doubts?
We know what you are thinking. And we have answers.
“This is for extremists and crackpots.”
We get it. The media paints a picture that does not match reality. Rothbard was a Columbia-educated academic. Hoppe is a university professor. Our speakers are economists, jurists, and business owners. Come see for yourself, the worst that can happen is you leave with a new perspective.
“I don't understand anything about economics or politics.”
Perfect, that is exactly why you should come. The event is designed to be accessible to everyone. You do not need to know what the Austrian School is, or who Rothbard was. You just need to be curious about how the world really works.
“I don't have time to go to an all-day event.”
You can come just for the part that interests you. In the morning the focus is on money and Bitcoin. In the afternoon, conservatism and freedom. At the end of the day, Hoppe and Kinsella. Always with Murray Rothbard as the backdrop. Pick what makes sense for you.
“Talking about freedom and markets is interesting, but does it have real-life impact?”
Yes! And that is exactly what we address. From personal money management to building businesses and communities, you will see how these ideas shape concrete decisions and tangible results.
“If it's free, what's the catch?”
There is no catch. We are funded by voluntary donations and sponsors who believe in these ideas. We are not going to try to sell you anything. Just ideas, and those are free.
“I don't know anyone who is going.”
No problem! This event is precisely for meeting curious people like you. It is probably the only opportunity in Portugal to be in a room full of people who value freedom as much as you do.
"Human progress and freedom go hand in hand." — Murray Rothbard
