Japan will dramatically raise visa fees beginning July 1, marking the first increase in nearly 50 years as officials cite inflation and administrative costs.
Under the new fee structure approved by the Japanese government, the cost of a standard single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen. Multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen. According to Japanese officials, the change represents the first increase in visa fees since 1978.
The government says the higher fees are intended to reflect inflation and changing economic conditions. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi cited rising prices and exchange rate changes when explaining the decision. Officials have also argued that increased immigration and visa-processing costs have placed additional burdens on government agencies responsible for handling foreign residents and visitors.
The timing of the announcement has attracted attention because the new fees are scheduled to take effect almost immediately. Travelers who submit visa applications on or after July 1 will be subject to the higher rates.
While the increase sounds dramatic, the impact will vary depending on nationality. Citizens of many countries currently enter Japan visa-free for short-term tourism and will not be affected unless they require a visa for their specific travel circumstances. The changes primarily affect travelers from countries that already require visas to enter Japan.
The visa hike is part of a broader trend of increasing immigration-related fees. Earlier legislation approved by Japan’s parliament included plans to raise various visa and residency-related charges as authorities attempt to offset administrative costs associated with managing a growing foreign population. Some residency and immigration fees are expected to rise even more sharply than tourist visa costs.
Despite the sharp increase, Japanese officials have indicated they do not expect the higher fees to significantly reduce inbound tourism in the near future. Japan continues to experience strong international visitor demand, aided in part by the yen’s relative weakness against many foreign currencies.

…OR they’re the Japanese government is raising visa prices as a way to gatekeep nuisance streamers like Logan Paul, Vitaly and Johnny Smallcocky Somali a.k.a. Ramsey Khalid Ismael out, and do the same thing with troublesome followers of religion like Islam’s mudslime Muslims from corrupting and destroying the Japanese way of life and culture, making them pay up the ass in rightfully exorbitant fees just to come here as tourists.
The price increase seems to only be for Visa requirements that are already in place, and most of those nuisance streamers come from countries that don’t require Visas for short term visits. So, unfortunately assholes like them will still be able to get in completely unfettered.
I think it pretty clearly boils down to, ‘Japanese money is worth less now that it has since the end of WWII and the tourism industry has grown to the largest it has ever been. Therefore, the government must milk the tourists as much as humanly possible.’ Or words to that effect.
