10 games and game of the year?

Thank God you didn't play 11 or your head properly would have blew off your shoulders!

"wow! Game of the Year. Steve Ritchie did it, a new design! First off I'd say the upper-playfield is probably the best in the history of pinball. There's a lot to do up there, it's relatively easy to get up and stay up there for a bit, and the rest of the playfield isn't sacrificed for it. It's actually fun and satisfying while also pretty challenging. Fighting the boss can be a quick few seconds, or can require multiple trips back to the upper. It's a cool toy. The lower playfield while not revolutionary, works well and gives plenty to shoot. The center "trap" is a fun replacement for bumpers. The mini loop is maybe a little disappointing in that it doesn't do much and it's so quick that it's easy to miss, not a kinetically satisfying moment like it could have been, but, it's unique and it does it's job. The game has flow, but I wouldn't call it a flow monster like some other Ritchie games or Elwin games. The shots aren't particularly hard, but they are mostly pretty tight so it's easy to lose the flow. There's a few ways up to the upper playfield and while one is instant, the other holds the ball for a second or two and that can slow your flow. Aesthetically it is what it is; a giant flashy toy. The light show is fantastic, but the art is, well, Sonic. This is a great game, not quite revolutionary, but very very fun and certainly an instant classic. Overall it's probably on the easier side, as it should be with the kid friendly theme."
If you like the theme and have the money, I would not hesitate to buy, the gameplay is 100% there. I'm glad they are making an arcade addition, and would definitely take this over any recent Stern premium, but I wish they had a pro version too.

I am feeling bittersweet on this one. It looks fabulous but I hate upper playfields generally (though HP has the best ever in my opinion).
I do like the mini dmd rings. Those would be awesome in a lot of games.
I love spinners, magnets and drop targets so I should love this game. There’s just something about that Scooby Doo size upper playfield that is an eyesore.

More

Yep upper playfields almost always get old fast and this one takes up half the game. Meh.

Nice photos! Kind of surprised they had Amy sculpt there instead of a Shadow sculpt to match playfield of good guys on left v. bad guys on right

On that short clip did any other Sonic fan get a smile when you heard that sound effect for collecting a Chaos Emerald? Just me? Okay.

You might want to verify first for Sonic.

Yeah the sound effects were pure Sonic. The callouts were okay, no nostalgia there, but at least with a JJP game you can set the mix levels to make sure they aren't annoyingly loud. I hope they somehow get the drowning alert music in there! Like when you have 5 seconds left to finish a hurry-up or a mode or something like that.

Thanks to everyone giving actual reports and pics and stuff!

Is Steve Richie doing some of the call outs?! Sounds like him in that clip.

#3119 3 hours ago
Quoted from stubborngamer:

It doesn't bode well if this game lives or dies on a upper playfield.
Yes, it's possible they figured it out, and technically the code doesn't encourage you to get up there outside of boss battles. But you know people will be going up there all day even if they only score 10 points a shot.

There is a whole catalogue across decades of games with upper playfields that people love.

Yes or at least I think there are callouts in the game that are quoted from pervious games he did.

I know JJP/Steve had the Sega/Game voice actors do 6 thousand callouts for them.

#3123 2 hours ago

Steve isn't doing callouts. They merely just sound similar. When Robotnik said, "Play Better!" I questioned JJP on the callouts. lol. They have the actual voice actors of the latest games doing them.

As they said JJP has the original Cast...

...BUT that 'Announcers' Voice that says JACKPOT and stuff (also done by the others) could be him nontheless.

I at least think & hope he has a tiny role, but not as one of the characters.

No, that’s likely Knuckles…Sega would likely not allow Steve to randomly have his voice in the game.

So what's the difference between...

"Micro LED Rings" (AE) and "Sculpted Micro LED Rings" (SE)?!

Pictures show the rings around the display molded in ALL Versions of the game. (On the CE they're actually golden/ anodized as described.)

So from what I understand is the Arcade Edition just has a flat plexi bezel around the display, but the pictures are wrong???

Someone from JJP would care to elaborate?

This game looks cool. Im always a sucker for inline drops. Never owned a JJP (just not a fan of oversized LCD screens.) But I will say, aside from that, im digging everything else about this game and would consider owning an AE or SE.

Got some initial impressions from a few folks that played the game. They said it has a very arcade like feel and it plays ok. No ball lock of any kind, and only two real mechs with the Spinner/Loop and Eggman up top.

Was told the lack of gameplay was due to some things still held up in licensing, but the game is already out. This sounds weird to me….

Harry Potter seems to be the superior game by far as it has more intricate ball paths and the code is a bit more complex. Sonic seems to be a lot more straight forward to understand, and I got the impression the upper PF doesn’t really add much to the experience.

Would highly recommend waiting for gameplay or getting hands on the game before making a purchase. Just based on the feedback…

Had to re-render the our main video. So its gonna be another half an hour or so.. In the meantime enjoy this quick multiball action. *pardon my awful playing*

Sounds weird that code isnt complete because of licensing? Sounds like you've never heard of Pokémon then.

To think that Franchi wanted to take a crack at this and JJP turned him down…Unbelievable.

This is horribly incorrect. They asked me to do it and I agreed. Once I found out all I could do is use assets, I pulled out of the project.

As you should have! Unless it's an original from you, don't put your name to it. Too good an artist to sell out! <3

Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't get a choice. It's video game style art, appropriate enough for the license.

This has already been said, it was the idiots at Sega that decided this.

Aside from these side blades, I think the art is fine.
