Denio School to reopen for 2026-27 school year

After a year of sitting quiet, Denio School is set to welcome students back for the 2026–27 school year following a unanimous vote by the Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees.
Superintendent Colby Corbitt told the board that renewed interest from families in the area meets district policy requirements.
“All families expressed sincere interest in having their kids in school. At least 11 that said their kids will be there. Minimum is 7,” Corbitt said.
Denio was placed on inactive status in 2025 after enrollment dropped to two students. District policy allows for reopening if enrollment reaches the minimum threshold.
Trustee Ron Moser said a recent visit to Denio underscored the community’s interest in bringing the school back.
“It was probably the most fulfilling moment as a board member I’ve had,” Moser said, describing students’ excitement about returning to the school. He said he toured the building with the children during the visit.
Trustee Lori Woodland asked what it would take to reopen the school, prompting discussion of potential challenges.
Corbitt said staffing could be an issue, particularly finding a teacher for the remote location, and noted transportation could also present challenges in hiring and retaining bus drivers.
“There are issues to overcome, none of them significant,” Corbitt said.
Moser made the motion to reopen the school, which passed unanimously.
