The Japanese government has announced plans to raise the visa fees for foreign travelers by over 500%. This will be the first raise of the fees in over 50 years.

According to SoraNews24, the current visa fee is 3,000 yen (approx. $19) and will be raised to 15,000 yen, which puts it just shy of a clean $100.

Over the past several decades, Japan has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. The mainstream popularity of anime, as well as its clean cities and low crime rate make it a desirable location while still remaining “exotic” by western standards.

The increase in fees is a result of inflation and exchange rates, at least according to Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. However one can’t help but cynically remember the proliferation of nuisance streamers like Johnny Somali or Fidias who went to Japan to cause trouble and use their international status to try and dodge consequences. Somali was notably later charged and sentenced to hard labor in South Korea.

The new visa fees are set to go into effect on July 1, adding a sudden upcharge to many tourists’ summer vacation plans.
