Wikipedia-critic: 2026.01.24/colinmorris.github .io/blog/unpopular-wiki-articles : "“Random article” button isn’t as random as you might think. Whenever an article is created on Wikipedia, it’s assigned a random number between 0 and 1 (stored in the database as a field called page_random).", "Rather, we would get a lot of editors with conflicts of interest, using Wikipedia for publicity, profit, or to settle a score. Before the community tightened up its notability criteria, it was not so uncommon in the very early days of the project to see blatant autobiographies, advertisements, or attack pages."

2026.04.01/janeaustensworld .com/2025/10/05/rare-books-about-jane-austen-georgian-england-online/ : "In the age of increasing AI domination, it has become easier to find quick facts about Jane Austen and the age in which she lived on the internet. Yet, as many of us have learned, AI scrapes information willy nilly from online sites, regardless of whether those facts are accurate or not. At first I was caught flat-footed. Not being a JA scholar, but a devoted reader about her life, I sadly used some of those wrong facts, but I learned quickly. I now have some tricks up my sleeve – I study original sources from the memories of scholars and family members who knew her personally or lived during her age, as well as from the people who survived her and recalled their memories of her well into their old age. I also purchase books from Austen renowned scholars and academics (but a few of their books will be listed in another post.)
I found out-of-print books in antique book stores in England, Boston, New York – whichever city I visited or lived in. But these treasures could be quite expensive. I discovered Thrift Books and ABE Books online, which sell histories and biographies also out-of-print for an affordable price. Better yet, I discovered The Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg years ago. They’re akin to searching libraries and their catalogues of precious books on your computer.";

Comment/s: Automatic citation is bad., "@diamondthemoon2508 8 months ago For me the easiest thing is LOL just reading the sources and collecting relevant text in notebook + the citation and the page nr (since my uni require it) and basically, then asking GPT or whatever to put a decent narrative.. it is easy to be fooled by the technology without cross-checking it to be honest. 3 likes"

That's a lot of information. But it's nothing compared to what else is out there. Google can only index the visible web, or searchable web. But the invisible web, or deep web, is estimated to be 500 times bigger than the searchable web. The invisible web comprises databases and results of specialty search engines that the popular search engines simply are not able to index. Do you think your local or university librarian uses Google? Sure, but certainly not exclusively. In order to start researching like a librarian, you'll need to explore more authoritative resources, many of which are invisible. 2026.06.04/zyppy .com/seo/google-index-size/ : "Many might believe you can simply search Google for any page on the web, but the opposite is actually more true. Out of trillions and trillions of possible pages, Google must narrow it down to mere “billions” of the most important documents. Google's Index size Google typically keeps the actual size of its index a secret. But recently, during testimony in the USA vs. Google antitrust trial, questioning by US attorneys revealed that Google maintained a web index of “about 400 billion documents.” The number came up during the cross-examination of Google’s VP of Search, Pandu Nayak. The 400 billion refers to Google’s index size in 2020. Nayak also testified that “for a time,” the index grew smaller than that. Finally, when asked if Google made any changes to its index capacity since 2020, Nayak replied “I don’t know in the past three years if there’s been a specific change in the size of the index.”",
"But charts can be deceiving. This makes it seem like Google always builds its index size up and to the right year after year. In reality—as recent court testimony proved—sometimes Google shrinks the size of its index. In fact, it may be shrinking even today. How Many Websites Does Google Index? 400 billion is a lot of URLs, but how many websites does this represent? While we don’t know the exact number, Google’s Gary Illyes shed some light on this topic when he revealed Google checks the robots.txt record of 4 billion hostnames every single day. (A hostname is the domain name along with any subdomain, e.g., “www.example”.) …you can see that we have about 4 billion host names that we check every single day for robots.txt. Now, let’s say that all of those have subdomains, or subdirectories, for example. So the number of sites is probably over four, or very likely over four billion. – Search Off The Record Podcast While we don’t know if Google indexes all of 4 billion of those sites, it’s likely a good estimation. Google Excludes An Increasing Number of Documents Google can’t index every page it finds on the web. Nor does it want to. Google actually discovers trillions of pages while crawling. But as Nayak testified, most of those pages aren’t helpful to users. “Like I said, trillions of pages is a lot of pages. So it’s a little difficult to get an index of the whole web. It’s not even clear you want an index of the whole web, because the web has a lot of spam in it. So you want an index of sort of the useful parts of the web that would help users.” Beyond getting rid of spam, Nayak listed several other factors that impact the size of Google’s index: 1. Freshness Of Documents",
"2. Document Size Webpages are simply growing bigger. Ads, images, and more code mean the average size of web pages has grown huge over time.",
"3. Metadata Storage Not only does Google store each document, it creates a tremendous amount of data about each document, including all the words and concepts related to each document. “… when we get these documents, not only do we create an index, we create a bunch of metadata associated with the document which reflects our understanding of the document. And that has also grown over time. And so that also takes space in the index. And as a result, that results in the number of documents that you can index in a fixed size of storage to go down.” Pandurang Nayak, US vs Google",
"4. Cost of indexing and processing At the end of the day, all those data centers cost a lot of money – and use a lot of electricity! “… there is this trade-off that we have in terms of amount of data that you use, the diminishing returns of the data, and the cost of processing the data. And so usually, there’s a sweet spot along the way where the value has started diminishing, the costs have gone up, and that’s where you would stop.” Pandurang Nayak, US vs Google",
"size of this (very small) website you are reading right now—Zyppy—is about 50 pages. So Google’s index could hold 8 billion websites like this one.",
"size of Google’s index compared to popular indexes SEOs might know about – Ahrefs, Moz, and the Wayback Machine.",
"Wayback Machine stores multiple copies of every URL it records but stores fewer truly “unique” documents. It also processes and stores far less metadata for each URL compared to Google. Likewise, SEO tools like Ahrefs are more likely to index more important webpages useful to SEO. The data Ahrefs calculates and records for every URL is also far different from Google. And Google, while it filters out a lot of junk, is more likely to contain vast numbers of documents like books, patents, PDFs, and scientific papers that serve smaller and more niche audiences. Takeaways for Web Publishers As AI-generated content floods the web as it becomes cheaper to produce, Google may be forced to index an increasingly smaller percentage of all web pages it finds. As Nayak explained, the goal of Google’s index isn’t about making a complete record of all documents but indexing enough pages to satisfy users.",
"If Google isn’t indexing your pages, you may need to evaluate your site’s technical SEO, the usefulness of the content, links to your site, and your user engagement, among other factors.
It may seem like being in Google’s index is a no-brainer.
But increasingly, we may see more pages excluded from it.";

Before this, most engines used text analytics and other analytics to determine relevancy, or good old-fashioned human curating (that’s what Yahoo! did, when they first started it was painstaking human curation. I distinctly remember meeting with Jerry Yang at their offices in Mountain View back in September of 1995, and the office full of real humans reviewing webpages and determining relevancy. At the time, you couldn’t beat human relevancy, since the algorithms, other than PageRank, didn’t do so well."..."beginning of the end for human curation – the web was getting too big for human curation anyways, as it started to grow exponentially.", "Early Google did a very good job of delivering the most relevant content because it wasn’t all that easy to link to another website – you have to have the technical skills to write HTML or have someone do it for you. So even then, the list of curators was very small.
Then came blogs and bloggers, who made it much easier to create websites with links. Link-based relevancy started to be gamed, so other methods, such as the textual analysis were added to the algorithm. At the same time, Google became the leading search engine on the web and basically realized that they owned the majority of the access to the rest of the internet. Despite their “don’t be evil” motto, they started to revise the results to feature “head” content (the popular stuff) over the relevant stuff (which might be more relevant).
To test this theory yourself, break tradition the next time you do a Google search, page down to the 10th or 12th page. I’ll bet that you will see some very interesting, very relevant content down there – stuff that you would typically never see on the first page above the fold since Google has figured that it makes more money from featuring the head content over the tail content. They used to sometimes mix some tail content in there, but now it’s all mostly head.
This is the same cycle occurred with blogging, podcasting, and video blogging. When Apple launched iTunes, it was all head content from the major record labels. When podcasting was hot the first time around, Apple decided to pull in all podcast feeds and make podcasts part of its content. It too, for a brief time, featured these “tail” podcasts, but soon after, dropped that in favor of the same strategy as Googles. Rarely are good “tail” podcasts featured. The same goes for YouTube – in the past, it was much easier for “tail” created videos to go viral, now the place is taken over by “head” content.", "for a while there, I was thinking about building an anti-search engine – one that would take Google results and remove all of the popular sites or simply display the results in reverse order. If you are concerned about your latest Google ranking, have a look at the engine's www2.google.com and www3.google.com servers. At the end of a month these servers frequently generate different search results from the main Google site. The main cause of discrepancies between the servers is Google's rolling update schedule. It's done in stages and takes several days. Google's engineers use www2 and www3 as staging areas to test new versions of the index. Of the two, www2 is the most reliable. Some people have argue that www2 contains the newest Google data, waiting to be moved over to Google's main server. If this is the case, a site's position on www2 is essentially a preview of its overall Google ranking. But a source at Google explained that while www2 often does function this way, it's not always the case. As for www3 it's "basically random" and thus almost worthless as an indicator of your site's fate.";

Sites that make this mistake: Amazon.com
Or maybe but unlikely this: Score = (Positive ratings) - (Negative ratings)
The way to calculate the "best" is:
It's called "confidence" in https://github.com/reddit-archive/reddit/blob/master/r2/r2/lib/db/_sorts.pyx#L93
Was this information somehow a useful hit or an irritating miss based of false equivalence between reddit's sorting system and Helium's sorting of biases and wrong intuitive assumptions?

Hi Rejmer,
I just pushed some changes adding Archive.org archives for all articles and some other improvements based on your ideas. Added overconfidence bias too. These changes will take a few weeks to show. Thanks for the archive.org url trick.

Dear HeliumTrades-Team,
In https://web.archive.org/web/20240102180357/https://heliumtrades.com/media-bias/cureus.com, is this fair to say it's oversimplified, toxic and subjective? "

Change takes time.
3 small amateur tips to archive webpages more efficient:
1. By typing "https://web.archive.org/save/" > another link after "save/" > pressing enter to load page, it saves webpage
2. Typing link after "https://megalodon.jp/" skips the first step, yet reCaptcha-quest and pressing "Save" has to be made
3. There's an one-button-archive.today-extension, where by clicking their symbol, it saves pages which was never saved before. Yet when it was, it ask to save again as request. Once the AI or Auto Mouse Clicker controls a computer without VPN or some factor causing a reCaptcha-request, link-lists can be archived. It's this: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/archive-page/gcaimhkfmliahedmeklebabdgagipbia
Happy New Eve too.
