Im not seeking to build a server, I want to replace my singular 3TB harddrive I had in an external cradle for a while witha raid array because it failed and took 700GB of backups and photography data with it.
I would not be opposed to it having an internet connectivity, but primarily I want to connect it to my PC via USB. I think I would go for 3+1 or 3+2 system of 1TB drives. Ideally, it would just behave like any external harddrive.
What would be a good system to buy and what brand of HDDs should I get?
I run Linux on both my PC and laptop and I sometimes use a switch to use my setup on either of them when I'm at my desk, btw.
>>
Is there a way to run a 4 disk RAID10 storage solution under Windows with the intention of eventually taking those disks and transferring them into a Synology NAS?

I'm currently using Windows Storage Spaces and would like an exit path out of the windows ecosystem that would allow me to use an array in the meantime.

>not seeking to build a serve

Replace with TWO disks.
Use one like a regular disk (like you did the 3tb drive).
And have your OS do backups to the other drive.

Internal disks or usb disks, doesn't really matter except from a perspective of cleanliness (mess of wires / being able to physically move the the whole thing to another location, etc).

>raid array
I don't see the need for this.

Is "home server" becoming a normie hobby? I watch only tutorials and occasionally listen music, but recently I noticed increasing number of normie looking youtubers posting about "homelabbing" and their coonsum media servers to "free themselves from cloud".

Lads I'm looking for intermediate/advanced ideas for the lab. Feeling very uninspired and blocked atm. I've hosted everything there is to host and adding new shit feels as trivial as adding a service in docker compose. The only thing left for me to do is actually develop software. I'm thinking maybe I should overengineer a website or something, or maybe build a sandbox for pentesting. k8s mini pc cluster perhaps? idk, what are your thoughts?

>fucking around with k8s/terraform/ansible/git and shitting out bash scripts is software development to you? or are you talking about something else entirely?
That's not development, I'm talking about something else, as an example: here where I work the devops team develops and maintains a Slack bot that is in charge of the monthly releases which involves multiple shit into a single flow like:
>>select jira tickets meant for release
>>check that release docs are signed and closed
>>create yaml file with all services meant to be deployed and their version
>>kick off deployment for each microservice
>>healthcheck each microservice
>>trigger smoke tests and notify relevant parties
it does this every single deployment for multiple environments and involves jenkins, quickbuild, jira, rancher and who knows what other tech

I think the idea of DevOps was to marry development and operations together, so if you wrote shit, you also deployed shit. But quite honestly, having done software development and DevOps, that idea is not executed in reality. Our team had a lot less time for dev and a lot more time doing ops for all of the other development teams.

You're speccing for the AI stuff, which will dwarf anything a Pi4 could have run, so it's pointless wondering if it's overkill for what you used to do.
With that in mind the question becomes "is this a good AI rig?" and the answer to that is "depends. What AI do you want to run on it?"
"Agents" is pretty broad. Could mean any tool-calling LLM in terms of hardware requirements. Will a shitty tool-calling one work for your agent? Maybe. Depends what you intend for your agent to do. Most people don't know. You should figure out what you want it to do before you drop nearly $4,000 not including the GPU price. Also depending on your use case it's completely possible this actually won't be enough and you need even more VRAM or a completely different setup.

As far as I know, the only file systems that natively work in both Windows and GNU/Linux are FAT32 (not an option with it's max 4GB per file limit) and NTFS. And NTFS sucks and requires you to go back to Window$ to run chkdsk.

Only option is to run RAIDed NTFS drives in Windows: gross. Unless, you can run RAID software in Windows which operates ext4 / ZFS / whatever HDDs without using WSL. I don't use Windows. I don't have a great answer to your problem. Did you ask a search engine or duck.ai?

Prices have really went up. Could partly be a good thing, as cheap external drives aren't always trustworthy.

External 3.5" HDD:

- A year or two before 2026: minimum is around 15 USD per terabyte

The router seemed to stop throttling the ssh connection between computers in the LAN after I restarted wpa_supplicant, 50 minutes between kill and start:
>2026-06-12T23:30:59.465828120Z = pkill'd
>2026-06-13T00:19:58.442378235Z = sudo wpa_supplicant -B -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wlan0.conf -i wlan0
though I may have only needed the wifi program (wpa_supplicant) to be off for 1 minute.

Now it's back to saying that it will process 7.02 GiB in 43 minutes (14 times faster than the network speed before). Don't know why my router is doing this. I don't know the underlying problem or how to ultimately solve this, but I do have a solution.

>FAT32 (not an option with it's max 4 GB per file limit)
While writing that part of the post, I thought of a workaround for that: use IPFS. If you use Kubo IPFS, it shards the files into de-duplicated .data files which each have a max size of 1 MB. Of course, >4GB files can't natively exist in the FAT32 HDD. The FAT32 drive could be IPFS-only and contain larger-than-4-GB files which are from other storage devices (FAT32 drive acting as a backup or mirror in that case), or delete the original files if you need to save space or something.

I wonder which is better: FAT32 or NTFS? I'm guessing FAT32.

On the topic of using IPFS for storing copies of data where the original is deleted, I've seen catbox.moe delete videos containing music multiple times.[1] I have used IPFS to prevent these stupid deletions.[2]
>1. https://web.archive.org/web/20260609224506/https://files.catbox.moe/rhebb4.mp4 = 404/deleted, but the previous capture is HTTP 200 (not deleted)

I hope you at least seed it to a share ratio of more than 3. I go for more than 15.00, but never delete the stuff.

Only media that I download and delete is the .ts files from my HLS server / service. It's a livestreaming thing to do stuff like screen sharing. It automatically deletes the .ts video files from /tmp/hls/.

One thing I've noticed is that is there is a growing portion of people who just get absolutely pissed at the idea of having a regular sized desktop. I assume it's because they live in a shoebox or shared housing.
That automatically puts them out of any interest in having in additional PC for home lab stuff, much less anything full sized.
It's at the point where just having HDDs in a Synology is being seen as something only the privileged have access to because those people can hide it away somewhere.

This matters because some files have to be larger than 4 GB. I wish each file ever was smaller than 2 GB, but that's not the reality. WARC files created by grab-site are usually 5 GB in size, and there's many files in torrents which are individually larger than 4 GB, such as this one:

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:9671fb0855c7931fe98f03f7612c18010fb10121&xl=1163397208748

That's 1 terabyte of full images from 4chan in a total of 701 Content Addressable Archive files. The 1,105,578 image+video files contained in the CAR files are on average 1 MB in size; some of the .car files are larger than 4 GB.

fat32 was created eons ago dude, not sure what you want out of it. you're not going to be able to take your windows storage spaces drives and pop them into a synology and just magically get the synology to reads the filesystem. (i forget if syno uses zfs or btrfs by default)
you will need a place to hold your data if you're re-using the physical drives for the syno. or just buy new drives.

There's a third file system that works on both Windows and Linux: exFAT. But all the FATs have fewer features and less corruption resistance than NTFS. Generally, exFAT (one file table) < FAT32 (two copies) < NTFS (advanced journaled FS just like ext4). Besides, you'll probably want to switch to a Linux FS anyway once you make the jump.

Has anyone here set up a telephone PBX or done anything regarding VOIP? I'd like to set up a landline telephone running through an ATA as well as maybe having a couple phones throughout the house as a local intercom system.

How would I achieve this?
>>
>>109049149
my advice: use a hosted sip provider like callcentric and don't run a pbx yourself. I've swapped some landlines to a little grandstream sip box + ported number to callcentric and it works great.
Unless you want to learn a pbx, of course. Telephony is pretty aids.

Tape drive storage temperature to prevent degradation: 60 to 77 degrees F. Something about that:
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ts4500-tape-library?topic=planning-environmental-specifications

If I bought tape drives, they'd be somewhere which reaches like 82 degrees F max. I'm thinking that overheating is worse than underheating. That place may drop to around 55 degrees F. I may still buy a tape drive, as I have some ideas of how to effectively use it.

NTA, but I use sshfs in qBittorrent. I have a webUI at some local IP for one computer with a save path over sshfs to another computer.

When doing this, permissions matter. I currently do this:
$ sudo sshfs -o allow_other user@10.0.0.35:/mnt/a1 /mnt/sshfs/a1

But it may also work if you do this:
make /mnt/a1 owned by root and not normal user, then run $ sshfs -o allow_other ...

The idea is that the sshfs save path will deactivate when the ssh connection eventually fails. Otherwise, qBittorrent will start writing to /mnt/sshfs/a1/ when that folder is no longer a working sshfs mount. Thinking of trying to do the other method as it doesn't involve usage of the root user.

5-TB HDD in one of my server computers has been powered on for 1.5 years and now has I/O errors. It's failing. smartctl says this about said ext4 drive:
>sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc =
>Reallocated_Sector_Ct ... 4632
>Power_On_Hours ... 12988
>Current_Pending_Sector ... 139

Ever since I started using that HDD in that computer, I planned for it to fail eventually. However, it ended up having some rare and semi-rare data on it.

I have multiple methods in place for syncing the data to other drives, but the methods aren't good enough. They weren't consistent enough and didn't run automatically as cronjobs or something (running once every week for example). Lesson to be learned: schemes for syncing data must be hardcore if you don't want to eventually have to figure out what data is rare and what data is already synced.

(I already have another drive, a mostly-full 500-GB SSD, in that computer which can replace the failing drive.)

>>
>>109054270
I use a few different techniques. Something useful is if you are able to stop thinking about the images you get as "a big pile of images" and start cutting them out into different channels depending on what you intend to do with them as soon as you get them. You largely automate that first step or make simple changes to your patterns of obtaining images.
For art, or anything that is available on a booru, it has to be Hydrus or something similar. Not retaining the tags is just a monumental waste. They are the most valuable information you can retain alongside an image to keep them sorted. Hierarchal is not as good as tag based for almost all uses of images, and boorus put in many hours of work from their users to make that useable.
If you have multiple types of image that can come from a booru, put them into different Hydrus file services to further separate them. They probably have different tagging standards applied on the source site so it's not great to intermingle them.
For 4chan images, I use a browser extension that allows you to download files to different folders based on matching the URL to regex. Each images goes in Downloads/4chan/{board}, and for what I use them for, that's sufficient.
Everything else goes into a download folder at Downloads/chromium/{year}/{month}/{date}. It doesn't really make sense to folder them up like that rather than just sorting my Downloads by creation date, but it does mean I don't have to render however many thumbnails every time I want a single file.
You could put every non-tagged image into something like Immich and use their CLIP model (or whatever is best these days) to get some tags on there. It won't have as many tags as a booru would, but it's better than nothing.
If you have heard about the PTR for Hydrus, I would forget about pursuing that. The tag coverage is extremely low, and the taggers are held to no standard. I have seen people arguing with each other by editing the tags back and forth. It's stupid.

is there a general for the media nerds? I remember hearing that av1 quality was terrible in comparison to h265 a while ago and so the media nerds would stay in h265 and I was wondering if that's still the case.
because when it comes to making a media server I think one of the most important things is to ponder today is if the CPU can transcode in AV1 natively or not but if AV1 is as bad as people used to say I could just use a 6th gen intel CPU because those can do h265 iirc.
Also been thinking if it's worth waiting a few years for AV2 or h266 CPUs and it they're going to be good or not.
>>
>>109056930
don’t bother av1 is for really stingy bandwidth. if you’re streaming 4k and you dont have the bandwidth for it then that’s a bigger problem.
if you’re taking about archival, just saving your media, av1 wouldn’t be worth it either just because… why would you do that
>>
>>109057021
it's about long term planning, if AV1 was revolutionary like they said it was going to be then everything would be steering towards it at light speed and in 3~4 years you'd kick yourself for not having an av1 transcoding cpu.
it seems to be that they failed at it and so media will largely stay at h264 h265 domain as it is now tho.
I was wondering if things had improved but apparently not, maybe AV2 will be good then, but I don't expect AV2 CPUs until, idk, 2030?

If you're like me and have like 20 HDDs sitting around, bitrot may be a concern for you. I think the main concern is redundancy and the cost of it (vs. the cost of losing things), but bit rot can also become a problem.

Even if you have a NAS or rack and can address 100 or more terabytes and have all of that online at once, bitrot is a continual concern over the years. If you have ZFS mirror pools, this sorta fixes the problem if you have them running and they automatically scrub once every two months or whatever the frequency is. A non-local solution would be Filecoin where you pay crypto for miner(s) to store your data and they hash all of the terabytes they store every single day. More of an aggressive cryptographic proof than ZFS's lazy or relatively infrequent checking. Other thoughts on that = bottom of this post: >>109035841 →

Unlike ext4 where the drive eventually has a bunch of I/O errors, and by the time you find out it's already too late, ZFS will detect and report them sooner. Run "zpool status" if you notice I/O is slower than normal.

Pretty sure you can mirror drives like this: "sudo cat /dev/sdc | sudo tee /dev/sdd >/dev/null". I know ZFS can send and receive snapshots; I wonder if there's a way to mirror one drive to another but you don't end up with a mirror pool (so the same result as "cat /dev/sdc ...") but using zfs tools.

>>109054774
Price of that 6-TB HDD is around 66 USD/TB. I only ever paid that much when buying an SSD.
>>
bit rot wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the AI bubble, HDDs were getting cheaper and cheaper every year, 16TBs drives were actually quite cheap and you can compress and reencode everything to 20% of their original sizes, but the AI bubble ruined it, hopefully not for long
>>
>>109059330
>Run "zpool status" if you notice I/O is slower than normal.
To see if it's scrubbing or not.

>...mirror drives like this: "sudo cat /dev/sdc... but using zfs tools.
Why use zfs tools and not cat / dd / tee? So you don't end up with two completely identical pools with the same name. You want them to have the exact same data but they should be recognized and addressed as different pools. The process would look like this:
>$ sudo zfs snapshot -r pool@replicate
>$ sudo zpool create targetpool /dev/sdX
>$ sudo zfs send -R pool@replicate | sudo zfs receive -F targetpool
>$ sudo zfs list -r targetpool
>$ sudo zfs destroy -r pool@replicate # if it worked, destroy the snapshot on source if you want
>$ sudo zfs destroy pool # caution
Why send zfs pool from one hdd to another and delete the source? Partly because my source HDD has unfixable file corruptions which I think aren't storage medium corruptions.

I wonder what would happen if there was a power outage or interruption to the send+receive process. I've created a ZFS mirror pool in the past (one HDD wasn't mirror for like a year then I added another HDD to the pool); I could do things differently this time. For now, I may have to skip on redundancy and keeping living in a sinful state of no redundancy.

I'm genuinely starting to think that HDDs are a waste of money. I have two Samsung drives, one nvme and one m.2 ssd that have been running non-stop for 10 years.

You can get something like the Beelink ME mini N150 and do periodic back-ups to a USB HDD or rsync to Google Drive or a better service.
>>
>>109059431
I think HDDs are on their way out and basically only make sense for cold storage at this point, because they started making SSDs with 256TB space now that use less power than HDDs, over the next 10~ years it'll trickle down to consumers and then HDDs, yeah, only for offline cold storage

A single drive with more than 200 TB of storage capacity would be fantastic and a game changer; however, I think it's still priced in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars range.

>>109054270
>but there's a lot of options there now and honestly I'm just curious what you guys are doing to preserve your pile of gold.
I sometime try to make it part of meaningful things. Support and/or pay for those things. I even sometimes pay ETH for one-time payments to put files on a blockchain forever. The thing I've been using has been sucking for the past ~4 days (the gateways portion of it). There's one terabyte of 4chan images in this torrent for example >>109048515 go and download+share that. See:

That article said "Sandisk's 128TB and 256TB SSDs will ship in the first half of 2026." but it didn't say how much they cost. They only sell to "enterprise" now and not consumers, as far as I can tell.

>try to make it part of meaningful things
With this I don't suggest any website (even archive.org/details/ isn't trustworthy) or booru website. Even the better booru sites suck and will disappoint you. You must self-host the images with your own IPFS gateway or something. The term "self hosting" is stupid. It used to be just called "hosting" before everything was so damn centralized.

Yes there is no "cloud". Yes it's just other peoples' computers. However that sometimes removes the subtly to things. Yes, you should probably have everything locally no matter what is happening remotely. And what you have locally could be accessible from nginx, Apache, Tomcat, or whatever.

The point I'm making is that some cooperative storage clouds are better than others.

It's NVMe, so not just SSD pricing.

Right now, I read that you can buy a 16-TB NVMe for 16,000. At 1000 USD/TB, the 256-TB NVMe SSD would cost more than 256,000 dollars. Unless you're a multi-millionaire or billionaire, you aren't going to be buying this new hardware.

You basically have to use PCIe to U.2 adapters.
Cheapest will be the boards that go directly into a pcie slot and carries a few U.2 ssds, but you need bifurication on the motherboard.
If you want to do more than one (m2 or pcie x4 slot) and don't have bifurication, then you're going to need a controller card to break out enough cables.

How would you backup /var/lib/tor/ from one computer to another?

rsync over ssh results in permission denied errors unless you add the contents of source /root/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys in target computer then run this at source computer:
>$ sudo rsync -a /var/lib/tor/ comp2@10.0.0.47:/home/user/b/comp1/var/lib/tor/

However, that messes up the owner and group info. Everything in the /var/lib/tor folder is owned by debian-tor and in the debian-tor group (not the normal user group). Everything in backup folder /home/user/b/comp1/var/lib/tor is owned by normal user and not debian-tor.

A solution would be to run this -- "sudo tar ... /var/lib/tor ..." -- to create a tarball of that folder. All of the owner and group information would be preserved. I also don't like this method. It seems that there's no perfect solution. Maybe the sudo rsync method + sidecar files which contain the metadata. Or, use the tar method and encrypt the tarball in a .7z file by using 7z.

When dealing with root-owned or non-normal-user-owned data, things become a mess. Much easier to backup non-protected files. Another solution would be the rsync method and the target drive has full disk encryption on it, but I don't feel like using FDE.

Anyone else use Linux to expose localhost to the Internet via Tor? Thoughts on that? Here's picrel Linux-related image:

ebussy trolling aside, you want backup(s) so that your public+private keys corresponding to your .onion domain name isn't lost. Whoever has the private key controls whatever .onion site. People may want to encrypt their backups of such private keys. Otherwise, if glowies go through your devices, they will try to grab all the unencrypted private keys that they can. Behead CIA Niggers.

In general, the world needs more backups. Here's a backup of attached pic ("How to do a swastika with your body ?"): full version, not cropped to 9,999 px high

rsync doesn't preserve groups here because your target user is not part of those groups
adding your user to the group wouldn't be wise i guess
you could:
1. give debian-tor user of the destination host a home directory with an authorized ssh key, THEN use debian-tor as the destination user of the rsync command - it will now preserve owner and group
2. use sudo rsync on the destination host with
--rsync-path="sudo rsync"
the user used for this will need to have a sudoers entry permitting him to use rsync as superuser w/o password

So that Internet-public-service HDD is failing, but it's not dead yet.

rsync repeatedly disappointed me over the years. Say that you run this:
>$ rsync -a --info=progress2 /mnt/a1/something/ comp2@10.0.0.49:/home/user/b/a1/something/

One of the files has a size of 50 GB. rsync detects and I/O error at 49 GB into the file. Therefore, rsync deletes the partially-copied 50-GB file at destination. Not great!

The HDD is failing rsync! I don't need to run some other command; those will make it completely fail sooner! I don't want to do any more reads and writes than needed.

Fixes = the following. Not sure if --partial will do what I want:
>$ rsync --partial -a --info=progress2 /src/ /dest/
>$ ssh comp1@10.0.0.52 "cat file_with_io_errors" > file_with_io_errors # could also use tac then combine with the file from cat
>>
>>109073845
Use case (one of multiple):
You are dealing with data from BitTorrent. In that case other peers might have the 2% that you lost due to I/O errors because you used a cheap scam external HDD from Best Buy (bought c. 2022).

Typos fixed:
"rsync detects an I/O error", "some other commands"

>20 TB = 484.99
That's 24.25 USD/TB. In the past I bought that product from a physical Best Buy store for
>recipe from Best Buy: 350 USD without tax for 20 TB (was 450 USD but there was a "Sale Discount"). That's 17.5 USD/terabyte.

A 20-TB Seagate HDD cost 350 USD:
>https://web.archive.org/web/20260207083615/https://www.bestbuy.com/product/seagate-expansion-20tb-external-usb-3-0-desktop-hard-drive-with-rescue-data-recovery-services-black/J37C5H5XXK
That's 17.5 USD/terabyte.

>>109073845
rsync's --partial worked the way I wanted. Once you get this error:
> 6,340,060,575 176% 7.16MB/s ??:??:?? rsync: [sender] read errors mapping "/path/filename_here": Input/output error (5)
> 6,775,502,087 189% 712.59kB/s 2:34:45 (xfr#99, to-chk=102/104)
>ERROR: filename_here failed verification -- update discarded.
it doesn't delete the partial file at destination once the process finishes.

I recommend "rsync --partial" to get data off of a failing drive over ssh. Unless GNU ddrescue can be made to work over ssh.

Pretty much just VMs. I run a few DB servers (or, did, haven't set them up again) for some things that eats a good amount of ram. I'm using about 50GB out of 64GB of my main hypervisor, 10GB of that is ARC (I have like 3.5TB in L2ARC so I don't use ARC that much), a good chunk is a windows server VM for games that are easier to host on windows, my *arr stack takes a good chunk because I have about 3k torrents active.
My other host has 32GB and is sitting at 14GB with some LXCs and an 8GB home assistant VM.
My main VM host *is* also my ZFS storage server, so that might have been better with 128GB but it's DDR5 so fuck that.
>>
>>109059415
If all you care about for now is bitrot, you can set the ZFS copies to 2, it essentially mirrors the data on one disk. If you wanted to go more extreme with bitrot protection (depending on how much data you're storing) you could have 2+ offline disks, each with 2 copies of the data and scrub them with something like a 15 day offset (more or less half a month) so that you realistically only have a 15 day window where bitrot can fuck you up.
Treat it the same as a hypervisor quorum, have at least 3 copies of the data (counting a single mirror pool as 1) and then you should always have a consensus on which data is correct.

I was thinking of maybe buying one of their streaming sticks, but if they're merging with fox then their time is limited.

What home server solutions are there to the living room streaming stick problem? I was thinking of getting an n100/n150 mini PC with a remote and putting libreElect OS on it, since Kodi has support for a lot of things and it comes preinstalled that should work right?
Its for my mom who likes to watch stuff on UK channel apps, we also have IPTV and an amazon firestick has worked great for years so far but eventually I'll need to upgrade so I want to get ahead of the problem.

That's essentially your only option if you care about privacy and controlling your own stuff. I've heard the support for streaming services is spotty and limited if that's important to you.
Would also not recommend anything Roku makes, they're like the king of locked down adware. Apparently Apple boxes are the least intrusive option if you want something easy for users that just works with every subscription service.

>over just buying new
>this is some conspiracy shit
It's all types of items, any setting with bids, tech or not. Occam's razor applies, which is to say that it's simply retards with FOMO/gambling tendencies. Literally that simple. Maybe on eBay some unscrupulous sellers could be trying to trigger poorly set bidding automations to drive their own sale price up. As for local auction houses or such, it's once again retards who are caught up in the 'excitement' of bidding. If a seller on FB Marketplace tries to pit me against other buyers I tell them to pound sand. As for eBay just filter for "buy now" and forget about bidding, it's a fucking waste of time.
>is there any chance of a good deal on anything?
It's possible but you basically need to find hidden/poorly listed shit that no one else has found yet. Your best bet for any item is to trawl absolutely every item under a broad single keyword, e.g. DDR5/HDD/NVMe whatever it is, sort by lowest price and keep scrolling through until you find some shit buried. On the flip side you could also try searching exactly with model numbers, 'multi-word' or syntax based searches are also worthless. Either go broad or precise, those are your best bets. The same rules apply to Marketplace, doomscroll it instead of whatever other slop you waste time looking at, use the categories and just refresh a few times through the day.

I think Wendell made a video about this. If you really care about containers/vm management you would instead run proxmox, virtualise truenas and have it exclusively manage you storage with ZFS. You've then got a more robust

I know I personally don't do enough for it matter greatly, but I'm also lazy and take shortcuts when setting this shit up and always regret it later on.

get ironwolf though some people here would make fun of you for that
>having to get rid of/redownload media
I didn't mean you'd be deleting them. it's just that on drive failure, it's not that big of a deal if all your drive content are just media. so you wouldn't need redundancy or backups (yet)

There's no point in virtualizing TrueNAS. Just have Proxmox manage your ZFS. Maybe make a Turnkey Fileserver LXC if you need SMB and such.

People can't find tech jobs and the advice they get is "build your own home lab" so naturally people looked it up and youtubers made content around it. It's not become normie out of enjoyment but out of the fact that it's a "good" resume booster.

idk if this is the correct place to ask, but does anyone here archives games?
I like to archive games that don't need to be installed and run by clicking the .exe, steam games are like these after you crack the steam dll.
I was wondering if I install a gog game, can I archive the installed folder the same way? I'm wondering if the .exe plays in any machine without installing, the reason why I'm asking is because there are several games on gog that don't have denuvo while they do have denuvo on steam and while denuvo was recently bypassed, it still hogs cpu resources for no reason so I'd rather archive the gog version and not the steam version.
hopefully someone would be able to answer this.

I do. Here's some video game torrents >>109084049 →

I recently downloaded "Ori and the Will of the Wisps [NSP]", dunno if it's any good:

>I like to archive games that don't need to be installed and run by clicking the .exe
As in it installs it to "C:\Program Files\" or whatever. So you want portable executables that can be run in an emulator or something. I've got tens of gigabytes of Nintendo Switch roms files. Those meet that criterion.
>>
>>109088119
I have rom collections for ps3, ps4, xbox360 and switch already, they follow a different rule from windows .exe games
>>
>>109087604
But what about compressed repacks? If you want to archive games, having them as super compressed installer, less disk space.

>How many drives do you have? How big are they?
>>
>>109089424
ALL HDDs will fail. It is occur a matter of time. This is why charging money for spinning rust, packed with helium that will fail is sinister and downright criminal. Especially when they don't pass the bathtub curve.
>>
>>109089424
I was lucky enough to buy a 28tb hard drive before the prices skyrocketed. Seagate said they are not going to make any more factories because that would take too long and I don't think Western Digital has said anything either which way. The prices are probably not going down anytime soon. If you need a replacement you should just bite the bullet.
>>
>>109089446
I'd love to have a small server with just nvmes/ssds, but the prices are way too high. 3x 8TB for raidz1 is insane.
>>109089585
Nice, but one single 28TB drive without redundancy, idk. I'd at least mirror, I know it's expensive, but I guess it's fine for media storage to consoom.

alright my niggers, been building a media archive
now what do i use to play it?
mostly mp4 files
i only want a simple searchable folder view then go to folder click on file and play
what can i selfhost for this?
i dont care about subtitles or AI sorting or thumbnails other useless features
also no gay stuff like plex or jellyfin
i upload mp4 in the library then the app picks it up in the folder view then i can play it in a browser over lan, simple as that
what to use?
spoonfeed me or you will never kiss this girl

FritzBoxs are fucking hopeless because they're designed to nuke themselves as soon as they hit SNR they don't like. A lot of copper lines are utterly fucked so the SNR is shit by default.
Get some piece of shit used TP-Link unit. Ironically despite some units sharing the same Broadcom chips as Fritz, the TP-Link firmware generally hammers through shit SNR compared to the pedantic German autism. Then just lock the configuration down in bridge mode and forget about it.
>muh TP-Link vulns
DrayTek has had some just as bad + I'm assuming (and hoping) you already have a competent router that chokes the bridged DSL unit's surface area

Just a simple NAS. Install Samba and share your specific drive/folder. Then you can access it via pc or other devices, browse folders with your local file manager and click play and it will use your hosts media player. For example:
/home/nigga/niggadrive
share that dir via sama and access it.

Immich or Jellyfin is probably too much.

>how do I get over the uncertainty of buying used/refurb drives?
Easy
>SMART info
>story of their usage
>vibe of the seller
>test them with badblocks when you get them
>always have redundancy
Used HDDs from individual sellers are also almost always blown the fuck out in price:usage ratio anyway, because retards don't understand that they're like a car driving off the lot. As for professional sources you can trust them more as long as you go for recertified and never 'refurbished'. However, these days you won't get material swaps and will instead get refunds equal to value at the time of purchase from professional sellers. If a drive fails during testing that is.

>>109090677
The time for buying random mystery meat drives is over. If there isn't a manufacturer's warranty don't buy.

>This person is talking about setting up a high-performance, self-hosted cloud gaming system to play retro or modern emulated console games on any device in their house.Instead of playing the emulator directly on a weak device (like a phone, tablet, or cheap TV box), they are using a powerful host computer to run the game and streaming the video and audio over their local network with almost zero lag.
Why?

I'm looking at switches since I want to replace my current router.
Is TP-Link TL-SG108 a good enough switch to start? I know it doesn't have VLAN support, which I'm interested in, but it's cheap and I'm willing to sacrifice that for now.

As far as I see there's nothing too offensive about it, but I'm asking before pulling the trigger just in case and I have little idea of what I'm doing.
>>
>>109092767
switches are not routers
>>
>>109092779
Yes I know. I want to replace the router with an old PC running pfsense, and I need a switch to connect more than one ethernet cable to the network.

>>109092916
switches are either managed or unmanaged. if you want an unmanaged switch because it’s a single network then it doesn’t matter what you get, they’re dumb and the software doesn’t matter since you never interface with it. if you want vlans and advanced features you get a managed router and there might be differences in features and function but I couldn’t speak on which is the best since I’ve only used like 2 different managed switches.
>>
I will soon be booting Windows 11 from a Linux storage box with ZFS underneath. This will be through Qlogic Fiber Channel 32gb connection. Anyone got any pointers or warnings for me?
>>
>>109092916
>I want to replace the router with an old PC running pfsense
You should get another NIC for that PC then unless you want to run a fucked up ROAS setup that will give you a headache. As for which switch is good, just see if users have any grievances with whatever is cheapest for you. Basically any piece of shit is fine as long as it isn't straight up backdoored and doesn't have glaring hardware issues. Practically speaking once you're within the LAN segment you can run any slop hardware, just lock down configuration access with proper credentials and block any domains of whichever brand it is as a start.
>why managed switch?
You should just get a managed switch off the rip, if you want to do VLAN configuration later on, an unmanaged switch will suddenly become a paperweight and you'll be buying another switch.
>>
>>109057103
yeah, cause you're running your fucking docker containers on your fucking NAS instead of treating it like one
>>
>>109094602

>>
>>109068131
>>109090579
you're over complicating yourself, just install roms to your server and share them via samba / nfs or whatever and then emulate in the thin client, modern clients can handle up to wii easily, which will cover the best games in history
