Thank you for this. As a cis white middle-aged male, I can blend in most any 2A environment, despite my political and personal beliefs, but your article shows the United States I love and want to be a part of. I subscribed to Wired because of its growing reputation for objective (straight-shooting?) journalism, and while this may be a niche piece, I consider it validation. Please continue.

Hey, please beware your headlines: the headline and subtitle to this article make it sound as if Charlie Kirk's killer was ideologically inspired by the left, which we now know is NOT TRUE and contributes to the false narrative circulated by the Trump regime. This is the sort of thing the NY Times has done for a decade to sell newspapers. I expect WIRED to do better.

I didn't get that out of the sub-headline. I interpreted it as the notorious event changed the opinion of the writer in some way, or the subjects of the article changed their beliefs or behaviors in some way because of said event. And the exact nature of that would be explained in the article. Definitely not that any group was responsible for it. The sub-headline is fine.

Great (and risky) work about a frightening and logical progression after years of misinformation/disinformation from the right with the systematic dehumanizing and demonizing of differences. Scared white people (I am white, 77yrs, gun owner) have been whipped into a frenzy by talk radio and now, podcasts-as well as a decade of exposure to a certain president who happily normalizes the despicable... True words - 'the second amendment has to apply to everyone' Unfortunately, with both sides well-armed, outbreaks of violence are going to be horrific. And so we (theoretically...) learn. Best from this corner...

Every single article, comment and situation never addresses child murder. Why don't these "good" people have a plan to keep their "rights" while protecting the unprotected?????????

Ty for this reporting. I've followed stories about Redneck Revolt, those Not Fucking Around guys and John Brown gun clubs but haven't really come across anything that would function as a foundation for an actual leftist militia movement. Maybe I'm not weird enough or just live in a too Trumptarded. Other than my partner I don't even know another socialist, anti-fascist, action oriented sort of person who is local. Regardless, the reporting is inspirational. I'll follow the content creators mentioned and stay tuned. Thanks again.

I have an incredibly hard time believing there is any actual leftist militia movement based on my interactions with others at shooting ranges in the 3 states I have lived and practiced in.

I'm like your other commenter...72, white, cis-male veteran. When Trump got elected, I knew LGBTQ+ people were in the crosshairs. I started offering a "new shooter" class, advertising the training only in the LGBTQ+ community and soon found out about and joined Pink Pistols. One of the PP members got their Instructor certification and is now leading similar classes. Interesting article, and I appreciate Wired for publishing it.

Same here, I'm 72, white, cis male veteran. I've struggled with being armed and liberal for decades. I have a rep at the gun club as the "token liberal". While I want to believe there are more like me they just keep their heads down and stay closeted. I've taught DV survivors defensive handgun skills and have an open invitation out to anti-gunners to get some hands on reality therapy. While I'm glad the LGBTQ+ community has risen to this level of activism, I'm disappointed that garden variety armed liberals aren't as visible.
