One of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved films is receiving a new live-action adaptation, though fans hoping for direct involvement from Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli may be disappointed, as the upcoming project is instead being developed by BBC Studios and Kadokawa.
A new live-action television adaptation of Kiki’s Delivery Service is officially in development, with BBC Studios Kids & Family partnering with British production company Wheel in Motion and Japanese publisher Kadokawa. The project will mark the first live-action television adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s original novel series.
The series is not being produced by Studio Ghibli, despite the property’s worldwide popularity stemming largely from Hayao Miyazaki’s acclaimed 1989 animated film adaptation. Instead, the new series will adapt Kadono’s original books directly rather than remaking the Ghibli movie itself.
According to reports, the project is planned as a 10-episode series consisting of half-hour episodes. The story will once again follow 13-year-old witch Kiki as she leaves home to begin her independent life in the seaside town of Koriko, where she establishes her famous delivery service while learning to navigate adulthood and responsibility.
Screenwriter Irena Brignull has been attached to the project. Her previous credits include The Boxtrolls, The Little Prince, and Skellig. Original author Eiko Kadono expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation, stating that she is excited to see Kiki embark on a new adventure through a different medium.
The announcement has also led some fans to note that this is not actually the first live-action adaptation of the property. A Japanese live-action film based on the novels was released in 2014, though it never achieved the same level of recognition as Studio Ghibli’s version.
That said, taking into account the modern era, many suspect the series will be subjected to politically-motivated changes, like perhaps race-swapping certain characters to push “diversity”.

Expect a black girl with a white cat.
So what
Not interested in live-action, but this reminds me to rewatch the Ghibli movie. Haven’t seen it in ages.
This will be another woke s♥♥t movie.
I guess it will be a black thing playing Kiki.
Pretty sure they gonna change ‘Tombo Kopoli’ to a gay thing or switch him for a girl.
And make Kiki a lesbian.
Like always gonna ignore all the Live Action s♥♥t.
If you are a fan of Ghilbi, go watch their movies. No need for live action s♥♥t!
She will be black/asian and genderfluid/non binary.
OY VEY HOW DID YOU ACCESS OUR SCRIPT!??!!
How terrible? I guess you’ll have extra trouble cranking to it?
Kiki will be a n♥♥♥♥r, Jiji will be a faggot white guy and Osono will be a tranny.
