I can't say that I disagree with that particular assessment.

[–]RayWhelans [score hidden]  (1 child)

I think this actually raises an interesting question upon reading the aftermath section.

Has anyone who is not part of the Trump administration, MAGA media network, or a GOP politician praised this? I mean literally anyone reputable on the side of foreign policy or academia. You can’t even find a quote to “balance” the perspective of the article because it doesn’t exist.

[–]Current_Account [score hidden]  (0 children)

Unfortunately the prime minister of Canada has said it’s a good deal, much to everyone’s chagrin.

Generally Carney’s been doing a good job of balancing placating vs standing up to the bully to the south - this one left us a little confused.

[–]LegendaryJimBob [score hidden]  (1 child)

Well the US started it, had to make peace deal and pay them for it. So considering the paycheck they about to receive vs them having to reopen spot that was open before US or more accurately Trump decided to cause shit, i would say they 100% won it

[–]Zkang123 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US and Israel

[–]binzersguy [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US totally mishandled this situation, gave Iran all the leverage, and then signed a deal that is essentially a surrender document. Of course Iran won. It’s not over yet because the US admin doesn’t know if’s ass from its elbow, but to date, we are the bigtime losers.

[–]SedativeComet [score hidden]  (3 children)

Duh.

They’re in a markedly better position than they were with the Obama deal and will be getting $300 Billion in reparations. The Trump admin can call that money something else, but it’s reparations from a loser.

[–]Fancy_Toe1451 [score hidden]  (1 child)

A minimum of $300bn, but uncapped at the top end. They get at least $300bn, and maybe more too.

[–]PossibleAlienFrom [score hidden]  (0 children)

I read somewhere it would be $400 billion.

[–]yapyoba [score hidden]  (0 children)

hows trumps rebuild of gaza going? are there hotels and golf courses yet

[–]11brooke11 [score hidden]  (2 children)

It's hard to argue with that when the US gained nothing and Iran gained quite a bit.

[–]FraserYT [score hidden]  (0 children)

Correction. The US lost considerably more than they had under the previous agreement. Some people just don't understand the art of the deal

[–]SquisherX [score hidden]  (0 children)

To play devils advocate, the US did blow a bunch of shit up - so it's not absolutely nothing, but it pales in comparison to the reparations, removal of sanctions and taxing of the straight.

[–]VorAbaddon [score hidden]  (3 children)

To early to call because it seems like it could reignite, but I cant disagree with the score being in their favor. Which is extremely unfortunate

[–]biscuitarse [score hidden]  (2 children)

The only way for the US to come out on top now is boots on the ground or a nuke, both of which are very, very bad ideas.

[–]phoenix1984 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So you’re saying we’re going to put boots on the ground or use a nuke, damn.

[–]VorAbaddon [score hidden]  (0 children)

Eh, we CAN come out on top via diplomacy still. It'd take a shitload of effort, a concentrated and organized strategy with allies, extreme skill, patience, and using the best intelligence we have.

:: Examines situation ::

Ahh.... shit.

[–]EmperorKira [score hidden]  (0 children)

My take is it is a bold claim to call this war over

[–]phantom_gain [score hidden]  (0 children)

Isnt that what happened?

[–]inquisitorthreefive [score hidden]  (0 children)

We signed a capitulation and keep getting mad that Israel is screwing up our surrender.

[–]jspurlin03 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Since trump started it, and trump signed an agreement saying the US is paying reparations… yeah. The US didn’t win. The US had, in Obama’s agreement with Iran, everything trump was trying to accomplish.

[–]SpitefulRedditScum [score hidden]  (1 child)

Yeah 100 percent. America took the L. Iran proved it can close the straight and ruin global economy whenever it wants.

American could beat them, sure, but it would require boots on the ground and nobody has the stomach for that.

Until that day, Iran takes the W.

[–]ahjeezgoshdarn [score hidden]  (0 children)

It wasn't even a Phyrric victory. They seem positioned to benefit significantly from the terms of the agreement ending the conflict and the US, and Gulf states making considerable concessions without much in exchange. The only real "win" that can be claimed is the killing of the previous Supreme Leader and some of the prior government, but the main framework and ideology persists. It was a huge waste of life and resources and will go down as a massive American blunder.

[–]turbo_dude [score hidden]  (0 children)

War agains the US?

More like an expensive bombing campaign by the US, that achieved none of the goals and has strengthened Iran in every way possible. Oh and that also pushed the prices up for people around the world. And murdered some school kids.

I’m sure the Israelis are loving the fact that their chump of a leader coerced brain dead Trump into a war that has now resulted in Iran having even more money to send to Hamas and hezbollah et al and still gives them nuclear capability.

Biggest foreign policy error in living memory

300 billion to be paid by the US, ownership over the strait of hormuz of which they can increase the tolling for passage now, AND they get to keep their missle program, and have it fully unchecked. Yeah they won

[–]Ok-disaster2022 [score hidden]  (0 children)

[–]JayFay75 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wikipedia didn’t declare Iran the winning side

Trump did

[–]ultralights [score hidden]  (0 children)

True. USA comes out far worse, financially and reputedly. Iran comes out ahead. New revenue streams a more hardline government and with far less US bases to worry about.

[–]Shas_Erra [score hidden]  (0 children)

Let’s put it this way: I’ve never before heard of the winning side paying reparations

[–]MasterpieceBoring578 [score hidden]  (0 children)

When the GOP is upset, you know it’s bad. They have accepted everything with that man . And I mean everything!!!!

[–]Odd-Elderberry-6137 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are. Iran made almost no concessions beyond what they had on the table 3 months ago, and get money from the US funneled through various gulf states to rebuild. Winners don't pay the losers in war.

[–]Harbinger2001 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not just Wikipedia. There is not a single person or organization other than the admin itself claiming this is not an Iranian win.

Which is also why the war is likely not over.

[–]Skarth [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Winner is Trump getting a distraction from the Epstein files.

[–]SpamOJavelin [score hidden]  (6 children)

What do you mean ‘Wikipedia has declared?’ Do you mean someone has edited a page to say so? Then you’re really just asking ‘what is your take on this random person’s opinion?’

[–]MhojoRisin [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yup. This isn’t how Wikipedia works.

[–]Fancy_Toe1451 [score hidden]  (1 child)

The discussion page voting is currently overwhelmingly for a "keep" on the Iran Victory status, and is citing multiple sources from all across the political spectrum in support of that.

[–]TheEarlNextDoor [score hidden]  (0 children)

It isn't 2005 anymore, just in case you were wondering.

[–]Borgh [score hidden]  (0 children)

Check the talk page. usually those are pretty tame but in cases like this it'll be on fire, possibly with admins stepping in to lock certain topics or assessments.

With a war like this there will be people from all angles and sides weighing in until a consensus is reached. These parts of wikipedia are nothing like the pages where randoms just write what they want.

[–]ItWasRyan [score hidden]  (0 children)

But we did definitely take the L on that war. Rightfully so.

[–]NuevaAmerican [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’d say the war isn’t over and don’t get too excited about this peace deal. The odds that Israel fucks it up by keeping attacking Lebanon and then suffers no consequences from thr US (continue to send them money/weapons) remain high .

[–]mike_litoris18 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Winners of wars don't pay 300billion and unfreeze their adversaries frozen assets... Anyone who doesn't think America took a phat L lives in absolutely delulu land and has completely lost touch with the real world.

[–]Cynical_Classicist [score hidden]  (0 children)

Well they did win.

[–]Anjack [score hidden]  (0 children)

If history is written by the "victors", then continued debate over the outcome would suggest that it's not yet over.

[–]Wiochmen [score hidden]  (6 children)

Do you mean to insinuate that the United States somehow won the war, by any metric you could think of?

[–]pup5581 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They got 1,800 of each us tax payer to let them rebuild and do this again in 10 years time....

So Cletus from the Bama trailer park with pro trump everything is funding Iran like the rest of us now

[–]Huckleberry822 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Trump lost the war, but it isn't over because Bibi is going to keep doing whatever he wants to do.

[–]Cacho665 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US has started this mess, literally. This goes back decades, back when the US overthrew Iran's first democratic elected leader, to put a person more aligned with US interest, but this leader was a dictator. Then the people of Iran overthrew that US leader and thats when we get pretty much what we have today.

US intervention strikes again. History will keep repeating or paying for consequences made from previous decisions. I wonder what future event will mold as an effect caused by these present actions taken today.

[–]Char_siu_for_you [score hidden]  (0 children)

[–]zumba_fitness_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

"It's not an a opinion, it's a fact!"

[–]Fancy_Toe1451 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are getting uncapped war reparations and allowed to return their nuclear program to pre-war "status quo".

Sure sounds like they won to me.

And since the "win" condition set by the United States was the complete destruction of the Iranian culture, and complete uncontested control of the Strait of Hormuz, and it has achieved precisely zero of the goals it set, and has voluntarily ended the conflict, it cannot be seen as anything other than an Iranian victory by default.

[–]Aggravating-Tea7670 [score hidden]  (1 child)

[–]eldonhughes [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think anyone who has any awareness of the history of agreements in the Middle East, especially any involving the US, and/or any awareness of any agreements Donald Trump has made in his adult life, would believe that this agreement has the shelf life of a paper placemat in a cheap pizza place.

[–]slek31 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Well, I guess we should start to get over that binary point of you, kinda childish, that everything has a winner and a loser.

I don't know who won. And I don't know who lost either.

This was more like a 4 months long skirmish.

[–]Ultra_HNWI [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's just words. It can be "fixed".

[–]PracticableSolution [score hidden]  (0 children)

Based upon the standard accepted definition of ‘victory’ in Mariam Webster, I see no option but to agree:

Victory is defined as success in a struggle, contest, or war; it is the overcoming of an enemy, opponent, or obstacle. It represents triumph, a decisive win, or a state of having achieved a major goal.

[–]BizteckIRL [score hidden]  (0 children)

[–]DubWalt [score hidden]  (0 children)

[–]thomport [score hidden]  (0 children)

We don’t know all the facts about the war. Trump definitely planned this war before he won the election. No one knows what his objectives were and what he and his cohorts were getting out of it. They probably won big money wise.

[–]Lister_RD_169 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I wonder if this will finally be the thing that checks the US exceptionalism and hubris.

I doubt it.

[–]Roselily808 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US sure as hell didn't win....

[–]charm33 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's correct

[–]Ok-disaster2022 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US will pay Iran more that Germany paid Europe after WW1.

In fact the total military aid the US has sent to Israel since 1948 totals under $200B. And the US is going to "invest" over $300B in Iran. That's money Iran can focus on infrastructure freeing up the billions they can now use on weapons platforms and production.

[–]Apawling_Behavior [score hidden]  (0 children)

A solid L.

[–]Virtual_Win4076 [score hidden]  (0 children)

That Wikipedia is a joke like I knew

[–]ProfesseurCurling [score hidden]  (0 children)

The US lost on everything. They didn't achieve any of their goals, got humiliated by a way inferior army and there is now a younger, more radical leader in place. They also now have to pay tremendous war reparations to Iran in addition of the minimum of 130 billions dollars this war cost to US taxpayers. And I won't even talk about the Straight of Ormuz situation that will cause important long term financial problems for the entire planet, including the US.

Their image on the international stage is once again stained by yet another illegal war of agression and the US/Israel relationship has been seriously stained.

That being said, after checking Wikipedia sources, nothing seems out of place, leading to serious articles from renowned experts.

[–]Nattekat [score hidden]  (0 children)

The winner of a war is the side that achieves political and/or strategical objectives, the loser is the side that loses political and/or strategial power. There's no doubt about it that we can at the very least say that the US is a loser in this war, they come out of it in a worse position than they entered it.

Then the only two remaining options are an Iranian victory or an inconclusive outcome. And there's a genuine argument to be made that the simple fact that US is a loser makes Iran a winner. Not only do they cement themselves as a local power, but they also have sanctions lifted, get to humiliate Trump with the 300 billion and basically didn't have to concede anything. The argument for it being inconclusive is the simple fact that it's not over till it's over, and right now it's still not over.

Personally I'd be leaning more towards the latter as long as there's no clear end to the conflict, but unless a very large shift happens it's going to be an Iranian victory.

[–]Dealius [score hidden]  (0 children)

Don’t we always lose?

[–]mataushas [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel like trump is seeing these losing war comments or headlines and will restart the war.

[–]Nurse_Hatchet [score hidden]  (0 children)

Too early to call, but they seem to have the upper hand at the moment.

[–]Ace612807 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Military victory is judged on whether or not the side achieved their stated goals, or wiped the other side out completely. Considering that US under Trump had no stated goals, and Iran still exists, US is a clear-cut loser

[–]Emperor_Zar [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is the correct statement. The US leadership and military FAILED.

Then again the entire US military is wholly committed to Trump and not the constitution anyway so when orange man tells them to continue to kill Americans I guess we all lose then.

The US is essentially dead and there isn’t a way out. The already have 2026 rigged with total GOP/MAGA support.

Every Epstein class Congress person and Senator ARE Trump. Doesn’t matter if there is a D or R. They are all on board with this.

[–]rrose1978 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It has been a strategic loss for the US.

[–]antifragile [score hidden]  (0 children)

Iran lost hundreds of billions in the bombing directly and more in the economic impact, thousands of lives lost, they didnt do as well out of this as people are making out.

[–]Secure-Donkey-9613 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They defended themselves until the hostile nation left. Of they lost, the US lost the American revolution also.

[–]kaskudoo [score hidden]  (0 children)

There’s no winners in war.

[–]eis_mcsquared [score hidden]  (2 children)

Wikipedia doesn’t “declare winners,” that’s not a thing it does. The actual page is way messier than that — it ended in a ceasefire on April 8, not a surrender , and analysts mostly just noted Iran held up better than expected and closing the Strait of Hormuz hurt global trade. Casualties were heavy on both sides too. So whatever post you saw is just making stuff

[–]izthistaken [score hidden]  (1 child)

Yeah, ok. We all know TACO folded per usual and lost at every avenue. Hey, it's ok though. Maybe you can go into some other NSFW threads and ask for upvotes for your bot account to look better 😂

[–]Adventure1956 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Spot on

[–]Bluebaronbbb [score hidden]  (0 children)

Iran literally won the war. What's to discuss?

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (25 children)

What did they win? What they lost is more than 300 billion dollars. It will take a lot more than that to rebuild what was destroyed. I'd say no one won.

Edit: so many people suddenly think trump is honest when he signs an agreement, and that suddenly he's going to fulfill it.

[–]redpiano82991 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The estimated damage to Iran is about $270 billion. But numbers aside, Iran is in a decidely better position with you MOU then they were before the war, while the US has achieved absolutely nothing from it. Iran now has control over the Strait of Hormuz that they didn't have before and are likely to charge "fees". The agreement also comes with a huge relief of sanctions. Iran has absolutely won.

[–]ultralights [score hidden]  (6 children)

They now control the straight of Hormuz permanently. And will tax every shop that passes. The $300B cost is far more than Germany had to pay after WWII. And $300b ina nation that earns far less and everything is far cheaper is very good for them. USA proved they are mastered by Isreal.

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (5 children)

What makes you think iran will actually get that money? Isn't reddit constantly talking about how trump always lies? Is he now honest? Is he now going to fulfill the terms of the agreement, something he probably never did in his life? The guy even stabbed Israel in the back, but he won't do that to Iran? Israel is not supporting this agreement, they're pissed off about it.

[–]JayFay75 [score hidden]  (4 children)

What an odd way to defend Trump

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (3 children)

Yes you're defending him by assuming he will live by the agreement. Quite odd.

[–]JayFay75 [score hidden]  (2 children)

Bro look around. We’re ridiculing him

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (1 child)

While also pretending that if he promises 300 billion then he's actually going to pay 300 billion. When has he ever be true to an agreement?

[–]JayFay75 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sure. Whatever helps you ignore your favorite president has been exposed as a powerless wimp

[–]egnards [score hidden]  (2 children)

It's not as simple as "oh man they had more damages. . "

Trump put us into an illegal war with a country for quite literally no reason other than his vanity - His own stupidity aside, it seemed pretty clear that the US would destroy everything and win quickly in their genocidal quest for domination.

In the end Iran held out, and gets:

  • $300B in reparations
  • Full control of the Strait
  • Much less nuclear scrutiny than they had agreed to under Obama, and even under Trump after he fucked up the Obama deal and gave us a worse deal.

What did the American people get?

  • 2 months of 2x gas prices
  • $115B in tax payer money wasted on something nobody wanted

Iran clearly had way more damage and a higher death toll, but when you look at this from the perspective of country to country? American leadership looks weak as hell, and Iran showed a strong sense of resilience.

America lost this. . .And now we should go back to talking about Epstein.

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (1 child)

genocidal quest for domination.

Funny, sounds like the IRGC and their proxies. You seem to suddenly think that trump signing anything means something. When has it ever?

[–]egnards [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm responding to a question based entirely on the information we have right now - You're right, though, in that Trump treats his position like an early 00s Katy Pery song.

[–]SentientLight [score hidden]  (1 child)

When I was growing up, I was taught America had never lost a war. And Vietnam was a draw. Then you read what happened, and it’s so very clear we lost. The losers will always try to claim the war was a draw or nobody won or it’s a stalemate or whatever, but it’s just cope. We lost.

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (0 children)

Doesn't Iran claim they won, lol? Are they the lovers then? Aren't they coping?

[–]Vegetable_Rise7318 [score hidden]  (11 children)

Didn't Iran get every one of their demands met?

[–]Any-Statistician2931 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yup. Yanks lost. Surrendered.

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (9 children)

In a potential ceasefire that isn't completed. But again, look at what they lost. Also, trump lies. What makes you think Iran will get anything?

[–]JaesopPop [score hidden]  (2 children)

So we should disregard the agreement because "well, maybe Trump won't follow through!".

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (1 child)

What happened to "TACO"? Yes, it should be disregarded. Tell me, does he not always lie and backstab? Yes or no.

[–]JaesopPop [score hidden]  (0 children)

Tell me, does he not always lie and backstab? Yes or no.

Lmao you trying to turn this into a binary as some sort of gotcha is super sad dude. You're all over this thread trying to defend Trump by pointing out what a piece of shit he is.

[–]Vegetable_Rise7318 [score hidden]  (5 children)

Because if they don't they'll shut down the straight again, and in 3-4 weeks the USA and most of the west will be a disaster.

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (4 children)

Then they'll get attacked again as well, and by that time, by more countries.

[–]Seated_Heats [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t think many other countries are attacking them. Most have contended the US. Israel will still keep fighting, because… Israel.

[–]Vegetable_Rise7318 [score hidden]  (2 children)

Can I ask - are you a Trump fan? You seem to be struggling with this outcome?

[–]your_proctologist [score hidden]  (1 child)

No, you guys are by seeming to imply that he's honest enough to actually live by anything he signs.

[–]Vegetable_Rise7318 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Oh look, I realise he's an insincere, lying POS. That said, Iran has shown its willing and capable of strangling off the world economy, so my guess is that Trump will honour the agreement in order to not face the repercussions.

[–]movack [score hidden]  (1 child)

I see 2 losers

[–]ICODE72 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Iran got attacked by one of the largest military powers on the world and came out with ownership of the strait, thats a clear, no, blatant victory.

[–]SylvainGautier420 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Draw. I don’t think having multiple leaders killed in succession can count as “winning” by any stretch.

[–]DefenestrationPraha [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't think the war is over yet, at least until it is clear that the southern Lebanon theatre is peaceful.

Regardless: Iran won a lot of concessions from the US, but them giving up their nuclear program is a big concession from their side, especially given the wars that they have been recently in. I would call the result an unbalanced draw with an Iranian advantage rather than a clear win/lose situation.

[–]rillegas08 [score hidden]  (0 children)

[–]alex2003super [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wikipedia has recently taken a sharp, left-populist, anti-Western bent over the past few years. Supposedly in an attempt to capture a broader or more neutral point of view, but in practice it's now biased towards thirdworldism. Even WP founders have commented on this issue.

I don't think this conflict had a winner or a loser, I think both sides lost a ton of resources and the way the U.S. came out of this is fairly embarrassing, as was virtually the entirety of the Trump admin's foreign policy in his second Presidency. But if you want my take on Wikipedia's reporting, it's this. Disappointing but not surprising.
