Kali - A place for learning ethical things.

Since, you said you’re a basic linux user, I hope you can figure out how things work in Linux and hence try some basic kali operations like

• cracking your own wifi hotspot.
• cracking your neighbours wifi.
• hacking into windows aside installed.
• Getting into other computers connected to your network.
• Phishing
• Social engineering using pre installed tools.

Then, its time to learn.

• Learn scripting eg. shell, awk (as stated in other answers)
• Write your own script to crack into your wifi.
• Install some things and make modifications and crack your system.
• After crashing your system, try to learn what did you do the last time and how to fix it and try fixing it.
• Learn which tools can be used for what type of attack.

LEARN - Everything you can. You have to be curious and have patience.
