Ruins of the monastery and church, Himmelpfort

The monastery, Himmelpfort, were founded in the 13th century, and was home for monks of the Cistercian order.

Unfortunately the monastery did not manage to become as successful as hoped, and throughout the centuries, it was traded numerous times.

In 1663 the Eastern part, the crossing and the choir were preserved and turned into a more modern form, in which a Protestant parish church was built, and the western part of the monastery, the nave (build early 1300), has been preserved as a ruin.

Abandoned shipwreck

What was supposed to be a dream for a young man, ended as a nightmare. He had just bought the former fishing boat, and together with a few friends, he set out towards home.

On their way, everything that could go wrong, went wrong.

Within the first hour the gearbox overheated, and they had to find the nearest marina. Once repaired, they continued their travel north, but after a few hours they ran into another problem, the boat took on water and despite having more than one power supply systems, the electricity onboard went out several times, leaving the boat without pumps.

Around midnight they alerted the emergency services and were told to steer towards shallow waters as they could risk having to swim ashore. Luckily, the rescue team got to them before it got that far.

Today the shipwreck is still there, abandoned, stranded where it was left, now rapidly decaying.

East German National Defence Complex

The Complex were meant as the primary control center for the East German National Defence Counsil (NVR) of the GDR and were part of a military investment program for the planned increase in the defense capability of the Ministry of National Defense.

The area also included a housing construction site for the accommodation of the employees working in the properties in relative proximity to the facilities. These building were constructed as most standard GDR-typical prefabricated buildings.

Through a tunnel in the basement of the buildings, there were access to a large bunker Complex from where in case of crisis, the NVR members would have sought refuge and exercise control over those elements of the East German armed forces (NVA) that were not under Soviet command in the Warsaw Pact’s joint forces.

The river were used to get lumber down to the sea, however as a nearby hydropower Plant were build on this location, they needed to be creative as to how to get the lumber past. The old mine were taken back in use for this purpose.

Hidden Stasi Bunker - Stasi administration command center

This remote location was a holiday resort for the sport organization of the security agencies of former GDR, SV Dynamo.

Less know to the public were the fact that the district Ministry for State Security (MfS), better known as the ‘Stasi’, had a 1000 m2 bunker build below ground. The purpose of this bunker was as an alternative to their command centre for administration in the district of Berlin if anything should happen to the official one.

Above ground, the entrances to the bunker were once disguised as barracks, connected by a 100-meter-long underground tunnel. A third more secret entrance were in a nearby bungalow.

Bagger 258 - The Largest Abandoned Machine in the World

Bagger 258 is a bucket wheel excavator built by the company Lauchhammer. The Blue Wonder it’s nickname from the blue painting that once covered the entire machine.

First put to use in DDR in 1964, Bagger 258 was one of a series of such machines whose task was to assist in intensive mining operations. This motorised excavator featured a total of 10 blades, cutting to a depth of 15m into the earth as it removed spoil from the layers of coal beneath.

With a length of 171.5m and reaching a height of 50m, the 3850-tonne Bagger 258 rather resembles a factory although this factory was mounted onto giant tank like tracks and able to move at a speed of six metres per minute.

The Blue Wonder was abandoned in 2002, for no better reason than that it had simply run out of things to dig. By this point the giant was showing its age, and the cost of dismantling it wasn’t justified. Today it stands alone, abandoned, in a field.

The Devil’s Bridge - Rakotzbrücke

Devils bridge, or Die Rakotzbrück, as it’s known locally, is located in Azalea and Rhodondendron Park Kromlau and was built over 150 years ago – in 1860. The bridge was designed using a unique construction accuracy that causes the bridge and its reflection to merge into a perfect circle when reflected in the waters beneath it, no matter what angle you look at it from. At the time we visited, the lake has been dried out as the bridge is undergoing renovation.

The white houses - WW2 German Weapons Testing

Hidden in a forest, forgotten in time, lies a fake ‘city’ - one of the last remains of Hitler’s dream of the world capital 'Germania’,

Four buildings // towers, each 20 meters high, built of reinforced concrete that served as a test site for testing both bombs and construction, materials and types of buildings to build bomb-proof homes for civilians in Germania.

The four towers were clad with white bricks, which can still be seen at the top. The bricks were removed after the war by the locals and used for the construction of houses.

Near the abandoned towers there are 2 walls, both one meter thick. One still stands and has a massive explosive hole in the middle - the other is overturned.

In July 1939, the walls were used to demonstrate the penetrating power of explosive bombs for Hitler. The demonstration did not go as planned, Instead of 8mm reinforcement, 10mm was used and the bombs lacked the gigantic penetration force that the weapon manufacturer would have liked to demonstrate.
