Did they apologize because it was a bad decision and they truly regret it...

...or did they just get surprised that people didn't appreciate their bullshit and are now trying to desperately backpedal?

[–]FirstLine1 179 points180 points  (7 children)

I appreciate it either way, because we never get an apology from these companies and this is a step in the right direction.

[–]glissandont 31 points32 points  (3 children)

It's really saying something that we even got something resembling an apology. 10 years ago it would have been unheard of. A lot of people say that GamerGate lost, and perhaps we've been on the losing side more than the winning, but it's clear that the tides are turning and games journalists no longer hold the power and sway they once had.

[–]Helium_PugilistProbably sarcastic, at least snarky 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably not a winning move to shit all over gamers and studios when you're about to be replaced by AI.

It's ok to be skeptical for sure but try your best not to get too paranoid!

This is at least better than Kotaku double down not getting press right from Nintendo because they promote "just pirate it!".

I mean i am a pirate too, but man i know not to publicize my criminal record.

    [–]Fun-Tits 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It also brings it to the attention of Nintendo so they crack down on piracy even harder... Geniuses over at Kotaku...

    I don't.

How would these people react if you apologized to them for anything? Make that your template for how you take this apology.

    [–]randoul 53 points54 points  (2 children)

Sony: You guys realise getting review copies is a privilege, not a right?

IGN: Oh god, oh fuck, please don't hurt us please 😭

    [–]IsThisOneIsAvailable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the coffee machine gonna be out of service for a month since they have to buy the game now.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn that's an even better reason.

    [–]skepticalscribe 29 points30 points  (1 child)

    The latter of course.

The journalists of today are not the advocates of yesteryear.

They are propagandists who hurt the poor with their lies and manipulative half truths.

Never accept their apologies as genuine, because they aren’t.

    [–]Million_X 57 points58 points  (5 children)

Probably a bit of A and B. I also imagine Sony isn't too terribly happy with the articles, they likely shelled out good money to make Stellar Blade a PS5 exclusive instead of letting it go to PC day 1 and seeing the outlets shit all over the design of Eve is basically spitting in their face. They probably got a strongly worded message to shut the fuck up and reverse course if they want early copies of Sony games so someone up top at IGN France did some work for once.

Hell, weren't we seeing a similar attitude and subsequent backpedal on the English speaking side of things? Journos giving Eve shit some time ago and then only somewhat recently they've been a BIT nicer about it?

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now it's they saying "no one is upset that Eve is attractive. You've made up boogiemen to target you."

    [–]Heinrich_Lunge 5 points6 points  (3 children)

The way Sony is now they would panic and censor Eve to appease the mob. More likely that Shift Up's legal team gave them a phone call and they panicked. Korean slander laws are super strict and you can be sued into oblivion for making someone lose face.

    [–]Million_X 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If Sony was going to do that they would've done so at the start, legal teams have a helluva time crossing international waters due to all the grey zones whereas Sony has a lot more immediate power in telling people associated with them to shut the fuck up. You don't spend hundreds of millions acquiring and helping to fund a project or at least get exclusive rights to it just to see associates shit all over it, that's why there's been this rapid 180 from a number of publications on the game.

    [–]Heinrich_Lunge 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Companies have gotten sneaky and very anti consumer about it lately so another one of these wouldn't surprise me. https://nichegamer.com/fairy-tail-panty-shots-censored-on-all-platforms-after-day-1-update/

    [–]Million_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but it's easier to hide panty shots from the news than full body suits and jiggle physics. The easier explanation is still 'Sony doesn't want people shit talking a major title they got exclusive rights to' instead of Shift Up threatening to sue while sony plots to make them censor the game later on (which again international waters make that a helluva task to pull off in general in BOTH cases).

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    The latter. Always the latter.

    [–]cyrixdx4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They were served litigation, this is the only way IGN would ever apologize.

    [–]Hlood6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In reality I think they were threatened with access to the game, shut down co-operation or something like that.

The whole professionalism of gamejournalism is built on the fact that they're petty pieces of shit with a gigantic amount of self-censorship

    [–]DBGaki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not even those two. They just clowned themselves and took big L self own with that "never seen a real woman" when the designer is a woman and its CEO wife. On top of that model body is based on a real woman. Even the woke crowd cant use "incel, never seen a woman, go touch grass" at this point, they lost so badly.

    [–]Spinach-Brave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Probably both

    [–]OrdinaryDouble2494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's the same.

    [–]fearthecrumpets 452 points453 points  (21 children)

"I realise now it was taken in its literal sense"

    Basically saying

"Really, it's your fault Stellar Blade, I'm sorry that you're too stupid to see that it was a joke."

    Who hires these utter hacks?

    [–]Respox 148 points149 points  (0 children)

It's the typical "I'm sorry you were offended" non-apology that you get from these narcissists who can never admit that they're wrong.

    [–]Zambeesi 208 points209 points  (4 children)

"Oh no! I can't believe my terrible and biased choice of words can be interpreted poorly. How could I have possibly known this?"

      [–]Leisure_suit_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Journalist who writes for a living.

Journalists finding out they're not writing for a facebook group. They've gotten away for far too long with this shit in the West. Maybe it was Sony who made them apologize, I don't see them bowing to a smallish Korean developer studio.

P.S. You can't write "unprofessional" without IGN.

      Old version:

made by someone who hasn't seen a woman

      New version:

made by someone who you might think hasn't seen a woman

They didn't change jack shit; that's the equivalent of putting "(not financial advice)" or something. IT'S THE SAME STATEMENT.

      [–]Streak244 53 points54 points  (8 children)

As I recall, jokes are supposed to be funny, not make scathing accusations.

The only joke around here is the writer.

      [–]lyra833GET THE BOARD OUT, I GOT BINGO! ~ Mod 30 points31 points  (5 children)

Remember that these people never actually lie. They're like demons bound by contracts.

When they say that jokes are harmful and can be used to mask cruel behaviors, they're actually telling the honest truth about what they think jokes are for.

      [–]Streak244 18 points19 points  (3 children)

It's simple narcissism, they don't like being the butt of jokes.

But anyone joke that isn't aimed at them, fair game.

      [–]lyra833GET THE BOARD OUT, I GOT BINGO! ~ Mod 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yeah, because they see jokes as fundamentally hurtful.

      [–]Streak244 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Only when it's aimed at them it's hurtful. People that don't have a stick up their ass can actually laugh at themselves.

      [–]lyra833GET THE BOARD OUT, I GOT BINGO! ~ Mod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The word "bully" isn't used enough.

Bullies don't actually have a sense of humor. To them, a sense of humor is a thing other people have that allows you to treat them like shit without them hitting back.

      [–]BossomeCow 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Some scathing jokes can be funny, but it requires tact and the ability to read the room.

Both of these are usually incompatable with narcissism.

      [–]Elden-Cringe 38 points39 points  (2 children)

One of the most cowardly things I see a lot of people like to do is to pass off a genuine insult and disguise it as a "joke" just so they can attempt to get away insulting you without facing the consequences.

If you belittle and insult someone, they're not going to take it any sense other than what is immediately implied on the surface.

If someone says "Hey, your mom/gf/wife is definitely a whore!" they don't deserve to get off the hook by just saying "it's a joke brooo".

      [–]lyra833GET THE BOARD OUT, I GOT BINGO! ~ Mod 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And then God forbid you make a joke; these people then fall the fuck on you like you've said something horrible.

They literally cannot conceive of a joke that isn't meant to hurt somebody's feelings. This is why they see all edgy jokes as slurs; all of their "edgy" jokes are actually just unironic calls to violence, so they assume yours must be the same.

      [–]sick_of-it-all 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once knew a girl who had an Aunt that had a phrase for this behavior, the whole saying a mean, hurtful thing couched as a harmless joke by the person saying it. She'd say "You kid on a square". It's simple, and points out the behavior for what it actually is. I've always liked it. You just reminded me of it.

      [–]ArmedWithBars 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh it's just basic legal finesse. In the event that they did have any legal action taken over it, which most likely won't happen. They can point to this clarification as a piece of evidence that the comment in the article was just a bad joke instead of a direct statement.

We know this is a lie, but a court might see it differently. Worked in HR in my early 20s and saw shit like this all the time.

        Now the passage reads:

"The game's design, and in particular that of its characters, highlights an obvious bias. We're going to beat up aliens, but if we can do it in a way that pleases these gentlemen's eyes, that's a bonus. And the result isn't exactly a success. It's nothing new, and other games have chosen to highlight the assets of their female characters, but where Bayonetta stands out thanks to her iconic character design, or 2B from Nier Automata inspires a whole generation of cosplayers, Eve from Stellar Blade is just bland.

A skin-tight jumpsuit with absurd proportions, heels that are perfect for going to war, a ponytail so long they have to put an option to shorten it in the settings (true), nothing's right. Fortunately, the animation is up to scratch, and Eve moves with a grace and style that makes up for it, but Shin Jae-eun, the Korean model used as the character's model, is lost under layers of clumsy plastic modifications that make her unrecognisable, both in body and face."

        [–]Instinctz4 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Because other game studios have never made their characters significantly uglier or more beautiful then the actor or actress in question

        [–]Million_X 97 points98 points  (1 child)

Funny considering all the shit Bayo and 2B got for their designs. Hell, Eve is basically Bayonetta 2.0 when it comes to the controversy, it's practically the same beats over and over.

        [–]jimihenderson 48 points49 points  (0 children)

lol i love that they're using 2b and her constantly exposed thong ass as a positive example in the context of overly sexualized female protagonists. they'll literally just grasp at anything within reach to try and be "right". sometimes i wonder if they even know why they're arguing anymore.

        [–]Jotunheim36 23 points24 points  (1 child)

How do they know Stellar Blade won’t inspire cosplayers ?

I do not for once believe that apology comes from a sincere place. They initially changed their line from "made by someone who hasn't seen a woman" to " "made by someone who you might think hasn't seen a woman" which is a complete slap in the face.

Korean models and even the director's wife (who looks incredibly gorgeous at the age of 40) are really not too far off from what the characters look like in the game. It's disgustingly misogynistic, sexist and racist to claim that if women don't look as hideous as Abby, they're not women.

The only altercations made are the ones that are necessary to translate a real life model into a stylized aesthetic of a video game. Still, on a surface level this is an acceptable apology.

        [–]Megatics 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It being sincere doesn't matter because that article breached basic editorial ethics. To post something that is one an insult and two factually wrong just raises the concern of how much they really cared about Stellar Blade and just wanted to dunk on the developer.

When we say the woke crowd or modern audience don't exist or care to buy the products in the first place, these idiotic statements tend to emphasize that more. Any reasonable person is completely unbothered by how the character looks just like most people aren't crazy offended when any male Adonis is shirtless in a movie.

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But asians are white people for them, therefore they can't be racist against them. And feminine women are a threat to their postmodern feminist ideology, therefore sexism is fairplay. Or some similar excuses.

        [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I thought the problem was there were too many white ”dude bros” in video games. Now we can’t like Korean women? What the fuck to they want.

        [–]hostrelok 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter why they did it. What matters is they did it. Say what you will about IGN but when people call them out on something they WILL backpedal instead of fucking around and finding out like Kotaku or other publications. It has happened a lot with them. They at least understand the concept of "Don't piss of your primary demographic" at least to some small degree.

        [–]gadesabc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A nice and logic move. It changes because most of the time it's the weirdos who force everyone to apology if they don't accept their crazy things.

Now the best step would be to do some cleaning into the ranks of journos by removing the tourists who get there thanks to DEI, and remind the ethics of the profession.

Edit: that said, being caught botting for traffic doesn't help to make them look better:

The original version was unprofessional, childish name calling essentially. The author and article still suck though.

the Korean model used as the character's model, is lost under layers of clumsy plastic modifications that make her unrecognizable, both in body and face

Could you imagine them trying to pull the model used for Eve out of a line up of different body types, maybe it's the 300 lbs whale

        [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ever seen Alloy’s actress compared to her in game? And MJ from spiderman 2? They dont care about changing the actresses to be uglier, androgynous or even masculine (Abby TLOU2) but once they take an actress and make her cartoonified/extra attractive then theres a problem from the journalist standpoint. The gaming industry is fucked because we have trojan horse social justice warriors at the top of creative departments and we have non gamer journalists that are forced to fall in line due to how corporate and corrupt the industry has gotten.

Helldivers 2 for example is made by gamers for gamers and its simply a fun game with its own satirical politics and they even made adding toxic PVP and MTX a joke for April fools. They were pushed by LGBT to add their cult flags into the game as capes but they said they don’t want politics in their game since its an escape. The women aren’t sexualized, the community and game itself aren’t racist nor sexist and this speaks higher onto the stereotype that gamers get about being wildly sexist, racist and homophobic. The fact of the matter is, 12-15 year olds on CoD are like that to be edgy whereas most gamers play to escape the shackles of the real world.

          french dude here.

This is also what I was thinking, however there are a few caveats on winning this in France.

It is clearly slander, as it attacks KHT ad-hominem, and do not debate the subject at all which is sexualisation of the woman body.
Also, KHT runs a multi-million $ game project, there are hundreds of jobs involved, all the partners and sponsors, a new platform on which many investors bet money on... this is some big shit, not at the indie level of ign France.
At the same time, we have to admit it is light slander - more on the mocking side, labelling KHT as the single relationless otaku. It is not a huge defamatory allegation such as accusing him of sexual assault or financial fraud.
Now what the judges really need to consider, is that this sort of thing is something new that happens on the internet, the "cancel culture" as we call it. So the key here would be to associate the slandering to a sales loss in France. But knowing the judicial system in France (leaning heavily on the left), I am less than optimistic on the issue of all this for KHT, shall he ever file a lawsuit.

          [–]Temp549302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I suspect that they didn't just happen to "realize" on their own that they could be sued in France. I'd wager there were some quiet threats behind the scene, either from the developer or from the model's agency, to remove the blatant insult or else they'd take legal action. At which point they actually ran their article by a lawyer who made it clear to them that yeah, there's some liability there and removing the insult and issuing an apology was the cheap way out.

          [–]shipgirl_connoisseur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's nice to see the soapbox preacher bow their heads in apology for once.

Reposting my comment from another thread:

The retractions are predictable and always worthless.

What these “journalists” do is publish often straight lies and inflammatory/insulting character attacks because they think it will win them political cred…

Then, after the public perception damage is done they quietly retract their lies and smears.

Only this time it backfired, no one bought their bullshit, and the retraction is in shame rather than covering tracks.

          [–]CatatonicMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm an optimist but I see the trend reversing with this, remember when It was the other way around and corpos had to apologize for offending the proto woke crowd? [–]Bellowingwhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that they also are then being like "IGN France is completely independent and the main IGN editorial team has no oversight on us, please don't get angry at them" when everyone knows full well, if they took a jab like that at one of their sacred cows they'd be demanding the writer and someone from the editorial group get fired.

As the old adage says "You can't spell IGNORANT without IGN"

          [–]Raiden-666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They kinda throw ign france under the bus, no?

          [–]Katajiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I though the French were connosseurs of beautiful women.

          What happened

          [–]Million_X 43 points44 points  (5 children)

One of the writers there was a massive misogynist-racist who shat on Eve's design, specifically her body, and by proxy also insulted a bunch of women who were involved with the game and Eve's design. They made a comment along the lines of "A Doll Sexualized By Someone Who Has Never Seen A Woman" despite Eve's body being based off of a real woman and a lot of the people working on Eve in other ways are also women.

          [–]DJM4991 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Not just "a lot of the people," the guy's WIFE is an artist for the game. Hah

What did the origin passage say?

            [–]The79thDudeBro 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The offending line being something like "Eve looks like a doll made by someone who hasn't seen a woman", which is absolutely hilarious knowing Eve was made by bodyscanning a Korean model.

            [–]Hostile-Bip0d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and the one who made "3D Eve" and "never seen a woman" is married to the real Eve

            [–]YogurtStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something tells me whoever wrote that doesn't look anything like Eve lmao

It was 100% their intention. Don't try to escape the responsibility. This is not the way to apologize. You own up to it and take full responsibility

And *this* is why the Aristocratic Utensil is utterly, utterly wrong about just ignoring these woke journalistic hacks. If there hadn't been such a big commotion about this article, IGN wouldn't have had to come in on bended knee and make this apology. Back handed as it is, any ground the Left is forced to cede is a *good* thing, and shows that a majority of folks don't passively accept this kind of yellow journalism.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please IGN just close your doors! All your failed wastes of space you hire and have the fucking cheek to call journalists!! Your a disgusting vile bunch of hypocrites.

The sooner you and your like are gone the sooner the world can start to heal. Your days are numbered.

Why is IGN France in English

              [–]R-Rogance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the phrase taken in its literal sense" - as if there is any other sense.

"To anyone at Shift Up Corporation who felt personally targeted and insulted" - weasel words, the "I'm sorry you feel this way" non-apology. They are not truly sorry and there is not a shred of sincerity here.

What a bunch of a-holes. Screw IGN.
