The US has carried out inhumane experiments on Black people and intellectually disabled people, hasn’t it? There’s no way it can be any better than Unit 731.

The content of the video is fundamentally ill-advised. The Yayoi people were not immigrants from the Yangtze River Delta; rather, they were the result of intermarriage between the Jōmon people and people from the Korean Peninsula whom the Jōmon had invited to the Japanese archipelago. Therefore, the Yayoi people did not initially possess the metalworking and domesticated animals found on the Asian continent, and the burial customs, which reflect the culture unique to ethnic groups, that came from Korea spread only to a limited area in western Japan.

The "common adage" is, of course, a fabrication.

I'm curious about why Nepal marks higher score than Thailand. afaik Thailand is the most progressive in terms of gender minorities, but Nepal surpasses them? What kind of social system would reflect that? For example, is there a third gender and a system of marriage for them?

As Válka s mloky (War with the Newts) is a novel, I don’t think it was originally published in 1936 with such illustrations. Although the text contains some other words that can be read as Japanese, such as 強烈, 自分, それ, 目下 and 苦痛, I simply cannot believe that this was created by human hands since it has some short words spelled correctly even though the sentence as a whole does not make sense, this aligns with the thought processes of generative AI. Even if someone with no knowledge of the language had written it, the quotation marks (「」) would still be properly paired, but not even that is the case. This is very similar to the output produced when you prompt StableDiffusion to write Japanese text.

Is the book an English translation? Is it a physical book? What year is listed as the first edition? If it was made by AI, it’s possible that the other illustrations may also have characteristics suggesting they were drawn by AI.

Those Western countries are the ones that are often cited by malicious individuals deliberately attempting to brainwash people, or by ignorant people, when they argue that our country’s systems and social structure are inferior to those of other nations and therefore need to be reformed (particularly in the context of the SDGs and wokism).

On the other hand, when such people claim that Japan is hated by the whole world, the only countries they cite as examples are China and the Koreas.

Please do not forget that you are technically at war with Taiwan. Since it was the Communist Party that drove the Kuomintang out of mainland China and into Taiwan, there’s no point in shifting the blame.

It’s really pathetic to pretend to be a patriot when you don’t even know who Zhou Enlai is; Sun Yat-sen and Lu Xun would be weeping in their graves, and the forebears who fought in the Anti-Japanese War certainly didn’t do so for a future populated by such ignorant youngsters, so please stop it.

The First Sino-Japanese War occurred in a different era before modern international war crimes tribunals existed. As temporary commander, Prince Yasuhiko Asaka is alleged to have issued or sanctioned the "kill all captives" order. He was interrogated postwar but not tried, largely due to his imperial family status and MacArthur's decision to shield the Emperor's relatives for political stability. This was a controversial choice, not a denial of atrocities. Many other responsible officers (like General Matsui Iwane) were tried and executed. Selective immunity does not erase the massacre, which Japan has acknowledged in multiple apologies.

Japan provided massive ODA plus enormous private investment and technology transfers. These were not mere "loans" but grants and concessional aid that helped build China's modern infrastructure. China benefited hugely from this arrangement. Reneging on the 1972 agreement now by calling it "insufficient" is bad faith.

Criticism of the tower is understandable given its origins. However, demanding its demolition decades later as a precondition for "forgiveness" is selective historical grievance politics. Many nations retain controversial monuments from their imperial pasts (e.g., statues of Lenin, colonial-era buildings, or revolutionary memorials). Japan has transformed the site into a peace park. China itself maintains numerous monuments glorifying its own violent revolutions while downplaying the deaths of tens of millions during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.

When Chinese netizens and officials endlessly attack Japan over history, Japan (and others) have every right to point out China's own record. The Great Leap Forward caused 30–45 million deaths through famine and misrule. The Cultural Revolution brought chaos and violence. Current issues in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong involve documented repression. These are factual matters of governance and human cost — not excuses for Japanese wartime actions, but clear evidence of hypocrisy when China lectures others on morality and "historical justice" while whitewashing its own far larger body counts under Communist rule.

Pointing out unpunished individuals or old monuments does not erase Japan's multiple apologies or China's voluntary renunciation of reparations. Admit that you have lied.

Your claim is a typical distortion of historical facts. Japan has officially apologized to China multiple times, and China itself voluntarily renounced war reparations. Saying “no apology, no reparations” is pure propaganda.

Japan has apologized to China on numerous occasions:

  • In the 1972 Japan-China Joint Communiqué, Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka stated that Japan “deeply feels responsibility and expresses deep remorse for the serious damage caused to the Chinese people.”

  • The 1995 Murayama Statement expressed “heartfelt apology” for colonial rule and aggression. Subsequent prime ministers, including Koizumi, have reiterated similar positions.

Overall, Japan has issued more than 20 official apologies and statements of remorse regarding its wartime actions. The narrative that “Japan never apologized” is false. China keeps moving the goalposts because it uses history as a permanent political weapon.

China voluntarily waived its right to demand war reparations. In the 1972 Joint Communiqué, China explicitly renounced its claims for war reparations (a decision by Zhou Enlai). In return, Japan provided massive Official Development Assistance (ODA) to China — totaling roughly 3 trillion yen (about $30 billion). This aid significantly supported China’s infrastructure and economic reform after 1978. It functioned as de facto postwar compensation. Despite receiving this aid and benefiting enormously from Japanese investment and technology, some Chinese voices now claim “no reparations were paid.” This is a blatant breach of the agreement China itself signed.

Those who committed war crimes aren't enjoying their retirement. Class-A war criminals were tried and executed or imprisoned after the Tokyo Tribunal. Yasukuni Shrine honors all Japanese war dead, including ordinary soldiers, not just leaders. Most countries honor their fallen soldiers. China’s selective outrage ignores its own history of glorifying revolutionary violence while whitewashing atrocities like the Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, and current repression in Xinjiang and Tibet.

The presence of Japanese companies, restaurants, and Lawson stores in Dalian is normal economic cooperation. China actively invited Japanese investment for decades. If this feels “strange” to you, it is largely the result of China’s own state-sponsored anti-Japanese education, which portrays Japan as an eternal enemy while ignoring China’s own aggressive behavior today — militarization of the South China Sea, threats against Taiwan, and economic coercion.

Japan has apologized repeatedly and China officially waived reparations while receiving substantial Japanese aid and investment. Continuing to spread the “Japan never apologized” narrative is not about justice — it is about using history for domestic nationalism, political control, and regional influence. Life does go on, but it would go better if China stopped weaponizing the past while creating new tensions in the present. Facts matter more than propaganda.

Never. Such situations are something I’ve seen very rarely even in fiction.

In Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, the main character, a young boy, calls his parents by their first names, and I felt it was very weird. Also, in Crayon Shin-chan, the protagonist sometimes jokingly refers to his mother by her first name. That’s really all I know.

I went to a kindergarden in a buraku neighbourhood, but other areas around it were actually more rougher. Perhaps because it was a wealthy urban area, the disparity had disappeared by the latter half of the 20th century. At least in the area where I live, there is currently no discrimination whatsoever based on place of residence.

Things might be different in rural areas.

As something not seen in the West, I consider girls who use 僕/ぼく/ボク boku as a pronoun (so called ボクっ娘/ボク少女/僕女) to be a form of queer.

For those unfamiliar with Japanese pronouns, it is worth noting that, unlike English—where third-person pronouns are gender-specific—in Japanese, one can express one’s gender through first-person pronouns. The information contained in the pronouns does not necessarily relate to a person’s gender; it can indicate age, social position, or their relationship with the listener.

Boku” is a pronoun used by men, but its history is relatively short; it was coined no more than a little over two centuries ago. It was a neologism used among young men in academic circles at the time. Although it is a masculine word, it does not come across as crude; if anything, it even has a rather kawaii feel in shota context as it is used by well-mannered young boys.

You don’t have to be homosexual or transgender nor need for your appearance to be masculine or neutral to use this pronoun. In fiction, tomboyish or boyish girls often refer to themselves as “boku” and it becomes an object of fetishism itself. Of course, this can also indicate homosexuality or uncertainty regarding one’s gender identity. In some cases, this may simply be a phase of youthful recklessness (a case of 中二病) that does not last, while in others it may lead to a transition towards being homosexual or transgender. In real life, unless she's playing a character as part of a specific performance (such as a showbiz personality or a VTuber), it sounds rather cringey when a woman refers to herself as “boku”.

To give a specific example of a character, Rainbow Dash from MLP refers to herself as “boku” in the Japanese dub. This character is female both physically and in terms of self-identification, though her ‘rainbow’ motif is quite suggestive, but it was never revealed whether she was lesbian. Taking also into account her tomboyish nature, Japanese people interpreted this as she uses the pronoun “boku”. While there has been much debate over whether she is a lesbian in the West, there was a fitting label to describe her delicate and nuanced situation actually in Japan.

Personally, I consider this to be the ‘seventh colour of the rainbow’ (the Pride flag has six colours, but in Japan, the rainbow is said to have seven).

Conversely, the pattern where men use women’s language is known as オネエ. In its original sense as "older sister", this corresponds to the English word ‘sissy’. Although their gender identity or sexual orientation is not necessarily trans or homosexual, these are people who suggest that they are. This term can refer to so-called “okama” who retain the physical appearance of a man and have not undergone intake of female hormones nor transitioning. In Japanese, there is a distinct way of speaking that is considered feminine. Nowadays, young women tend not to use feminine language, but people who called "okama" rather tend to emphasize feminine language more and it is even called オカマ言葉 ("okama speech").

What concerns me more is when Native Americans are mistaken for "Asians". Their physical appearance and genetic makeup show continuity with Northern Mongoloids (East Asian Mainlanders) and Paleo-Mongoloids (such as Jōmon) and show no distinct break in the lineage, so It is difficult for someone who has never met that person to tell whether they are Native American or East Asian. It must be humiliating for them to be regarded as the newcomers, even though their ancestors have lived on that continent for over 10,000 years.
