The Product Manager Landscape: Big Tech vs. Medium-Sized Companies

Let’s compare product management challenges and opportunities across different tech environments.

Product development shifts drastically depending on the team size and organization you’re a part of. Whether you’re viewing it from a product management, software development, or designer lens, anyone can admit that the environment matters.

While startup life entails a separate topic entirely, I figured a more direct apples-to-apples comparison between big and medium-sized tech firms would be appropriate.

The way we’ll do this analysis in two ways:

  • We’ll evaluate the pros and cons from just a general career perspective
  • And we’ll dive deeper into the nuances of product development and product management between the two types of environments.

Both levels of analysis will greatly influence one’s product management (PM) experience; either interchangeably or in correlation with each other. One thing to clarify here is that we won’t cover the differences in compensation or benefits, since this could be a separate topic.

I’ve also been on both sides of the spectrum and I would say that there can be a mid sized company mindset in big tech as well. For those with stand-alone business units you can own an entire product line and have good visibility into the overall…

Interesting comparison! As someone who's been on both sides, I'd like to add a couple of thoughts:
In big tech, I've noticed that ICs (individual contributors) often struggle to see the bigger strategic picture until they reach people manager levels…
