Why can't Scratchers Change their Usernames?

I wanted to change my Scratch username because I don't like my current username anymore, however, I learned that once you put it your username while signing up for Scratch, it becomes permanent and there isn't a feature to change it. I know that I can just create a new account with that new username, but it doesn't feel the same as my old account and I find it more convenient to change my username on my current account. Other platforms allow users to change their usernames at any time, (albeit this depends by the platform as there are regulations) but Scratch happens to completely avert this by having usernames be completely permanent and unchangeable.

Why is this the case for Scratch? What would happen if Scratch were to allow usernames to be changed?

It says it below in the following quote from TOLORS:

9.1 Changing usernames or changing display names
If a user could change their username (or even set a certain “nickname” or “display name”), this could be very confusing for the Scratch community, especially for those following that user. In addition, this would make moderation of the website more difficult because it would be harder for the Scratch Team to keep an eye on what a user may be doing. The Scratch Team has allowed username changes only on very rare occasions, such as if the username contains personal information or causes gender dysphoria. Generally, the Scratch Team does not change usernames on request (including for reasons such as “I do not like my current username anymore”). For more information, see this post.

However, because of the way that usernames are stored on the server, changing the cases of letters in your username (for example, changing @Za-Chary to @ZA-CHARY) is NOT rejected. You can discuss it on this topic.
TL;DR: It would be very confusing for both the Scratch community and Scratch Team as well (in terms of moderating). Scratch Team does not change usernames on request unless the username contains personal information, is inappropriate or causes gender dysphoria.

However, because of the way that usernames are stored on the server, changing the cases of letters in your username (for example, changing @Za-Chary to @ZA-CHARY) is NOT rejected. You can discuss it on this topic.

adding onto the person above me in rare cases your name can be changed, like if it's inappropriate (which your name is not), has personal info, or is gender dysphoria

A big reason is also just because their server doesn't support it and it'd take a lot of resources to change how it works. When they change someones username they actually just create a new account and transfer everything.

Why can't Scratchers Change their Usernames?

yeah because someone could change their name to something inappropriate and then change it before anyone can report. and also because it could lead to a bunch of people pretending to be griffpatch…and then going on his comments. that would cause a LOT of confusion.

It’d get really confusing! And anyway why don’t you just put “call me ”, on your profile?

because then nobody would know which person someone is talking about if they have the same name
