Mindlock: The Apartment is a surreal psychological adventure set entirely in a single apartment belonging to Colin, a young man who is very much stuck in a rut! The game follows him as he tries to free himself from a familiar new prison.

It is a lot of fun to play and will take around 4-6 hours to complete. It has a lot to offer with its faltering and indecisive protagonist, surreal and psychological narrative, and varied puzzle-filled gameplay. It boasts a sinister atmosphere, strange goings on, and some genuinely creepy moments to keep players on their toes. The sketchy, hand-drawn artwork is brilliantly executed and perfectly complements the gameplay, storyline, and protagonist, whilst the enigmatic music bolsters the strange, threatening vibe and further immerses the player in the experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys point-and-click titles. It stays true to the genre whilst providing some unique and original elements that help it stand out in a positive way.

Very good game with humor but a deep story behind.
Progression is nice and there's a little more than just point'n'click (puzzles, ...)
Not too long, nice graphics.

PROS:

  • Engaging story that keeps you curious from start to finish.
  • Excellent dark humor that adds personality and emotional weight.
  • Outstanding voice acting.
  • Beautiful hand-drawn visuals that feel like a living piece of art.
  • Some interesting puzzles.
  • Smooth and responsive gameplay.
  • The highlight system (Spacebar) makes it easy to spot interactable objects, which is very player-friendly.

CONS:

  • Since the entire story takes place inside the apartment, there is a lot of backtracking, which can feel repetitive.
  • No way to speed up movement or fast-forward, making replays slower than they need to be.
  • No chapter select or rewind option, so if you miss an achievement, you have to replay large sections of the game.
  • The story tackles an authoritarian father figure, but by the end, he doesn’t seem nearly as bad as the game initially suggests making Collin come across as overly dramatic at times.
  • Some objectives are vague, which can lead to confusion or trial-and-error gameplay.
  • The mouse controls feel backward; left click should interact and right click should show info, not the other way around.

OVERALL:

This game delivers a strong narrative, great dark humor, and top-tier voice acting wrapped in a gorgeous hand-drawn art style. While it has some design flaws—such as excessive backtracking and limited quality-of-life features—it remains a memorable and enjoyable experience. It’s not perfect, but it stands out as a solid and creative entry in its genre.

This was a very fun adventure game! I am so glad that I purchased it and it definitely is well worth the money and time to play it. I personally could connect with the main character and the overall story. The story has aspects similar to what someone experiences in psychosis: hallucinations that bring up past memories long forgotten, delusions that push you to question your own existence, life and where you find your place in it all, and voices, beings the mind imagines out of thin air that push you along, that seem to guide you-- this is all too real as someone who has experienced psychosis myself. This game maybe wasn't designed to represent an actual psychotic break from reality, but for me, it hit the nail on the head because I experienced similar things that Collin does. My psychosis helped me understand myself better and know what I want to get out of life once it ended after getting proper treatment. The journey has only just begun and, as Collin discovers, every ending is a new beginning and inspiration will find you and guide you-- have faith in that. I've been inspired by this game, to say the least! I'd like to thank the creator, Rouven Schumacher and all those who played a role in its creation-- it truly is a work of art. It has all the makings of a fun, classic-styled point-and-click adventure with an immersive story and interesting characters, twists, and turns. The puzzles are challenging but not in a way that forces you to consult a walkthrough each time. As long as you explore every angle and examine things closely, you should be able to solve them on your own. It has some aspects that reminded me of Edna and Harvey but the story is more down-to-earth and relatable. You won't be disappointed in this game!

Really shocking this game is listed as "overwhelmingly positive" with such a charmless main character and boring story. Game went on for what felt like days. As the title suggests, most of it takes place in the same apartment. Not a problem, but this is the kind of game that won't let you interact with items unless you need them. So you'll be able to look at things over and over, but won't be able to take them til you need them. That means a lot of repeating the same actions again and again. So if you don't like backtracking 50 million times, this game ain't for you.

We play a 22 year-old self-indulgent coward named Colin. His main problem seems to be unresolved daddy issues and boredom with regular life. Colin gets trapped in his apartment. The only way out is to work through different memories from his Colin's past. Most of it centers around his overbearing father who is a successful businessman and wants his son to follow in his footsteps. This had to have been written by a group of millennials. Boohoo, my dad didn't let me lounge around the house doing nothing and forced me to get a job I didn't like. Waaaaa, he forced me to do my homework instead of playing with friends who play on roofs and blow themselves up with fireworks. It all seemed like much ado about nothing. So you don't like your job? You're 22. Get a new one!
It was just hard to take this guy's side. He kept saying he had big dreams and plans for his life that were ruined by his dad's interference. Yet he never actually tells us what those plans are until the very end when he suddenly decides he had always wanted to be a chef. Suddenly, he's always had this extreme passion for cooking. Meanwhile, he's been living on a takeout and had no food in the fridge. Guess the passion came and went. The whole chef thing just seemed shoehorned in to give him something to do other than work at an office. I doubt he really even had any real plans beyond, "I want the opposite of what my dad wants." Just another whiny entitled kid.
The last bit of the game is maudlin and self-indulgent. It's written like a self help book. You CAN change your life. It's NEVER too late. Um, he's 22. Why are we acting like he's leaving some career he worked hard for? You're a glorified telemarketer, dude. It's not that serious.
I know most of it takes place in the same apartment. But the main character doesn't run so the game desperately needed a fast travel map. Also, some likable characters and maybe a plot that moves a little faster than a stoned turtle in quicksand.

Sometimes it's not clear what to do next. The game suggests trying to "combine everything" if you get stuck. So they acknowledge that there's going to be some illogical puzzles and confusion. Basically, you just have to keep visiting the same rooms and clicking on everything again and again. Eventually, you should be able to figure out what to do. That is if you haven't already quit the game in frustration at the repetition. I know I did several times.

Advice to developers: If you have a game that takes place in the same location, you'd better have a VERY interesting storyline to keep players engaged enough to want to finish your game.

Pros:
- Overall the story was good enough to keep engaged.
- Characters were well rounded with good dialogue.
- Liked the art style and map layout.
- This was a decent overall play. Glad I purchased on sale. Would only recommend to point&click lovers.

Cons:
- Puzzles were simple and more of a pickup-putdown style than genuine puzzle solving.
- No double click to skip walking to every door. Waiting for Colin to walk everywhere was a real downside and took up a lot of my game time, especially when backtracking.

Unfortunately no recommendation. It started pretty well and fun, the first 4 chapters were Ok. Kind of strange ideas to follow, but you can kind of guess the solutions. But after a while I needed hints from walkthroughs to progress and one point, even walkthroughs didn't help me any more and I got stuck.
It's a shame, because the basic idea is good and I love classic point and click games in monkey island style, but the developers got lost in their ideas and creativity I guess and messed up as the story continues. After nearly 3 hours of gameplay I was too annoyed.
Well intended, poorly performed.

Not intuitive. Not fun. Waiting on it to make more sense. I don't mind slow, but it needs to move some! I need some progress. I am looking for fun, not boring frustration doing things over and over with no progress.

This was a game which I didn't want to come to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me 14 hours and I had to look at a walkthrough on a few occasions. The surreal storyline captured my imagination and the artwork, which at first I was hesitant about, quickly drew me in. The characters are beautifully crafted, a trifle cliched but none the worse for that. At the start I thought the main character was pretty obnoxious but was soon hoping that everything would go well for him. The father's voice acting (in English) is a superb blend of superiority and disdain, And I must mention Valeria whose voice (in English) made me want to unburden my soul to her.

Pretty solid game about feelings of a guy stuck in a loop and a emotional turmoil on a way to unstuck.

Game never answer the question what is going on there exactly but it's not a focus of a game anyway.

Overall pretty solid experience outside of annoying bug in one of a later chapters. Underdiscovered gem.
