Upcoming Rolling Stones release "Honk"

Extended legal battle when the Stones tried to part ways with ABKCO. One bone of contention was ownership of the publishing and performances made while the Stones were still legally bound to Klein. "Sticky Fingers", started in 1969, was supposed to be made in stealth so that it would not catch ABKCO's attention and cause them to make claims. (Probably not a great idea to include documentary of nascent "Brown Sugar" and WH in the "Gimme Shelter" film.) When the legal dust cleared, ABKCO still owned the publishing on all of "Sticky Fingers" and four songs off "Exile". "Hot Rocks" was its own Keystone Cops film, with a pile of albums with the same song lineup manufactured by Atlantic and labeled, ready to ship as an RSR release, but ordered destroyed by a judge. I don't recall the precise method of baby-splitting the judge employed to eventually award the Stones the right to release those two recordings, but it could have come down to Klein not fronting the money for the studio time.

 

Agree with you though will add that Rolled Gold+ on vinyl (4LP Set) is the same as on *CD.
*N.b. The Chinese 2CD is short a couple of songs as they were banned.

 

Hmm... Not sure what to think of the sound of this compilation. My first impression was that it sounded really good, but with repeated listenings I don't know. Does Jump Back sound better after all? Maybe I should keep it after all. Honk has the full-length versions of all tracks, which is nice, but most of all it covers the years since Jump Back. The more the better! The louder not the better though! Doesn't Honk sound very compressed?

 

I believe so but I as I play it only in the car it is tolerable and a fun sequence/Playlist.
Rolled Gold+ sounds fine to me.
As for Jumpback I think it likely depends which digital version you have.

FYI, there are two different versions in atmos - with slightly different track orders and number of tracks.

I’ve only quickly listened yesterday to maybe a handful or so of tracks, but the previously unreleased 70s atmos tracks I heard basically sound like stereo upmixes. Doom and Gloom does sound like a real atmos mix though.

I haven’t gotten to the live tracks yet.

 

I’ve got the LP , it’s a nice tri fold and song selection, Ive been tempted to get the colour LP set too cause one of the live songs was a gig I went too so wanted it as a keep sake but never picked it up.

 

Note: It was Living In A Ghost Town, not Gloom and Doom. G&D sounds basically sounds like an upmix too.

Listening to a few of the GHS and Tattoo tracks, these sound like upmixes too - not the previously released Atmos mixes.

 

Actually pretty much all of the studio tracks sound like stereo upmixes except Ghost and the Bigger Bang tracks (Rain Fall Down & Streets Of Love, but not Rough Justice?). There are few others which sort of sound like they aren’t upmixes (Harlem Shuffle, Saint Of Me).

The live tracks probably just have the rears bumped up for ambiance, but they work just fine.

 

FWIW, after another listen, I'm not sure any of these were mixed from the multis for real Atmos. Headphones maybe, I don't know.
