But not on a physical compilation yet. That was my point.

I like your points although i feel disc 1 with the Decca/Abkco material was not edited and sounded absolutely stunning with some of the very best reproductions of that material at least to that time!

Guys, if I wanted to have this version of "Doom and Gloom" on vinyl, where would I get it? I know there were so many edits of this song. For example, isn't the one on Honk the "live, in-the-studio" version and not the poppy/radio version here?

That's correct, the GRRR! version is replicated on Honk. The Jeff Bhasker remix version you're talking about is available on a single-sided 10" record

Oh actually yeah I was thinking of Grr earlier. Yes that one is very plain.

Yeah, I’ve always preferred the Jeff Bhasker version to the original version that’s on Grrrr/Honk. Could be because the Bhasker mix was the first one I heard, though.

So do I. It’s got more ‘chug’ to it. It’s not a radical remix but it makes a substantial difference in its ‘rock-out-ability’.

I'm a longtime Stones fan who was adamantly opposed to Honk's existence so soon after Grrr but I've recently received the 4LP box set as a nice gift from a well-intentioned relative.

It's not a bad listen but I have to say the placement of Dancing With Mr D on a side full of much later tracks, some quite second-rate, is a bizarre decision I'd love to know the reasoning behind. Maybe they thought it would somehow stir one or two casual listeners to eventually pick up the then-forthcoming GHS reissue...

Yeah, I agree, it isn't a bad listen. I was opposed to it as well, but came across a very cheap CD copy early this summer and decided to acquire it, probably because I was in a big Stones listening phase at the time and got caught up in the moment.

Funny you both mention this because I was listening to a couple tracks from Honk: "Don't Stop" and "Doom and Gloom" and was thinking maybe I should pick up on vinyl since those songs aren't really available on vinyl anywhere else. Or maybe pick up a copy on CD for the car?

Both sound great on the vinyl, of course I have a personal soft spot for Don't Stop from 2002 life circumstances.

It's a great mix of post-71 tunes overall, a couple of curious choices relative to the others but I think of it as Mick running wild with not being limited by the need to include ABKCO songs (or more than one of Keith's vocal tracks).

It also seems to be very much a product of the vinyl-market resurgence, in a way that Grrr was not and that wasn't even a consideration at the time of 40 Licks. The main 3LP trifold within the 4LP set has a very nice spread of photos that was definitely formatted for vinyl sized packaging (even ones with Bill in them).

Great. Wondering if I should get the 4 or 3 vinyl edition? Major price difference between the two and I only like 2 of the live bonus cuts.

If I'd been paying I likely would have gone the 3LP route. Not sure the vinyl is coloured in that set but hardly necessary. The fourth disc is definitely superfluous beyond the collector's item aspect and I would wager unlikely to get a second spin by most who ever own it.

I have another theory - The licensing agreement The Stones had with ABKCO, Forty Licks and Grrr! has expired. This would explain why Grrr! and Forty Licks are now deleted and why Honk only has tracks from the post-'71 catalogue.

I also like the rock mix of “Don’t Stop”. I was glad I found a used copy of “Four New Licks” a while back. Had the four “new” tracks on “40 Licks” plus the rock mix of “Don’t Stop”.

....or just maybe more thought went into the sequencing on those little silver discs?

Seems plausible. That said, I really wish there was a vinyl release of Forty Licks. Great set.

From reading posts above my experience with Honk is not dissimilar.
I gave it a pretty wide berth then eventually bought the 3CD set with a voucher (and when on special) to play in the car.

Still dig the 4LP Honk box set. Surprised it hasn’t sold out on their website.

Sounds ok to my ears. The “live” LP w the guests, though some come off better than others, is a cool twist imo...something different.

Yeah, Stones do a lot of “best of” collections - the deluxe box w the colored vinyl did what it was intended to do...got “this” Stones collector to bite lol - a nice add to my admittedly bloated collection.

I wonder why the Sticky Fingers tracks are always overlapping on compilations? "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" are both on the 60's to 1971 compilations Hot Rocks and Rolled Gold. Then again the same tracks are included on compilations starting with 1971: Jump Back and now Honk! So why don't they finish the first in 197o (up to Let It Bleed) or start the second batch in 1972 and Exile? Why do 1971 overlap?

    Absolutely Korrupt Company Overlords?
No true they also have rights to use Brown Sugar and Wild Horses.
Rolled Gold was issued by Decca in the UK in 1975 and so was unable to issue those 2 songs.
Rolled Gold + was an enhanced package with extra tracks and first released in 2007 (IIRC on Universal) and was able to use these tracks!

Yeah that's right, I meant Rolled Gold+ (the CD version). I know those tracks are not on the double LP that my dad's got. That is an excellent compilation by the way, especially the enhanced version!
