Upcoming Rolling Stones release "Honk"

According to Hits Daily Double website, Honk sold more than 20,000 copies in the US.

 

The definitive Ron Wood and Mick Taylor comp.

 

I would say no as it omits 3 of Taylor's best Stones tracks, All Down The Line, Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Time Waits For No One.

They missed the boat years ago of releasing a 2 cd compilation that spans Sticky Fingers through Tattoo You.

 

I don't think "All Down the Line" has ever been on a Stones comp. And if we're going to split hairs, this one doesn't have "Shattered," one of my favorite tracks with Ronnie (which, BTW, I find nigh-on unforgiveable). So, I wouldn't say any set of theirs is truly comprehensive. But this one is still the definitive one, at least for now. I mean, can you name a better comp for either guitarist?

 

It also excludes Hang Fire which made #20 in the U.S.

All Down The Line The Line appeared on the Time Waits For No One Anthology.

I suppose you could argue Made In The Shade or the Super Deluxe Edition of GRRR! is a better comp for the Taylor years. It depends upon your song preferences.

 

There are only a few Mick Taylor differences between Made In the Shade and Honk. Made In the Shade has "Dance Little Sister" and "Rip This Joint." While Honk has "Rocks Off," "Hot Stuff," "Dancing With Mr D," and "Waiting on a Friend." For me, Honk wins that competition, hands down.

GRRR! is a different story. If we count the 80-track version (it was a limited-edition, CD-only release), then yes, it wins handily, if for no other reason than the inclusion of the songs from the ABKCO years. This comp was never going to have those, anyway. But yes, you're right, that is the best existing CD comp for Taylor, no question.

P.S. I'd never even heard of the Time Waits For No One Anthology. Good catch.

 

Hot Stuff doesn't feature Mick Taylor. It's Harvey Mandel.

The Super Deluxe GRRR! also features Rocks Off, Dance Little Sister and Waiting On A Friend in addition to Honky Tonk Women.

 

Thanks for that. I'd always thought that was Taylor. And that does make it a closer competition. But I'd still pick Honk. YMMV.

 

Forgot about that one. Another head-scratching omission. You would think they could have found room for both "Hang Fire" and "Shattered." Strange.

That is the size of the market these days. In the 90’s Honk would likely also have landed in the top ten w the proportionate amount of sales for the time (peak).

But were any of them as big as those two? Those two were both radio staples at the time, and are considered minor classics.

Actually, just went to Wikipedia and answered my own question. "She's So Cold," "She Was Hot," "One Hit (To the Body)," and "Highwire" were all reasonably-sized hits.

Although I don't ever remember hearing "Highwire" on the radio. It obviously was pushed to sell Flashpoint, but it didn't make much of an impact on radio stations, that I can recall.

But none of those are as crucial as "Shattered" and "Hang Fire," IMO.

 

Here are few I noticed. Some of these charted higher than Shattered in the U.S. Ain't Too Proud To Beg went to #17 Going To A Go-Go #25 and She's So Cold #26 for example, Shattered only went to #31.

True. But chart positions can be misleading. "Mixed Emotions," for example, charted considerably higher than "Shattered." But when I think of the Stones classic AOR songs - the songs that were played in constant rotation on rock stations at the time - "Shattered" definitely had "legs," while "Mixed Emotions" charted higher (mainly because it was the first group single since the solo albums, and it assuaged everyone's fear that the band was breaking up), but quickly faded away to become a footnote. And any one of the songs you listed could have easily slotted in among this collection. But to me, the only truly head-scratching omissions, in terms of significance, are "Shattered" and "Hang Fire," and maybe "She's So Cold." YMMV.

My guess is they omitted Hang Fire and Shattered because they were not released as singles in the U.K. but that doesn't explain She's So Cold and some of the others I listed above.

They also omitted more charting tracks like

Plundered My Soul would have been a great inclusion John, as for the Stones reasons behind tracklistings it often cannot be double guessed & there sure ain't no science to it.

 

I am not really a fan of Plundered My Soul but their reasoning for choosing the tracks they did is puzzling at best.

Regardless of the lineup of songs, the album is their first success for 2019... here's hoping a new batch of songs follows after the tour
