That performance by her brings things to (literally) a screeching halt. I bought and listened to the same show, and when MJ was introducing a special guest only 5 or so songs in, my brain went from "Wait a minute. Who guested this early?" to "OMG! Crow! Nooooooooo!"

I got to the next tune in the nick of time and avoided the scarring of 1994.

But no reason to avoid the whole show. The Bo Diddley guest spot is amazing. Cut out about a third of the album to taste (It is a long one).

    HONK is a lifestyle.

    HONK is honky.

    HONK is
Hate to say "I told you so", but just got this official email:

    It's music.

Other than the live disc, there is zero reason for another Rolling Stones post ‘71 compilation to exist in 2019.

A playlist on a streaming service would have taken care of combining the GRRR and 40 licks tracks. Expanding the 3rd disc to a double or triple and having a live compilation of odd tracks would have been far better.

Agree. But there are always gonna be 2,500 completists who’ll spring for the five-LP + t-shirt + lithograph bundle of this, and of 2023’s, pointless rehash of the same material we all own multiple times over.

If they had released this in the 2020s (i.e. next year) maybe I'd be less irked at it, considering then it wouldn't be in the same decade as GRRR.

Funny - streaming has actually encouraged me to buy titles I otherwise wouldn't have gotten.

More via the ability to hear artists who I otherwise wouldn't have heard. Someone mentions a new artist and I can check 'em out right away, whereas in Ye Olden Dayes I would've had to either wait to hear them on radio or TV - and I don't listen to radio.

I've also picked up albums by established artists when I was on the fence but listening to them in advance won me over - the Cars' "reunion" album fell into that category...

Wrong. If you could think out of the box for a minute, you may consider that compilations like HONK are not for the fanbase, but for newcomers. The band are going out on a tour in April. To create a buzz, you might as well have some new product to go with it. It’s easy to sit and point out that people could just spring for already released compilations or just stream what is out there, but that’s not how it works. Casual buyers will get what is advertised and what is featured in the headlines. A compilation like HONK will create enough interest (and money) to get people diving into their back catalog. That’s the whole point of it. It’s a product. Skip it if you don’t care instead of getting irritated that it doesn’t fit into your scheme of things. Compilations will continue being part of the marketing wheel forever.

Casual listeners will indeed stream this. Or, even more likely, they’ll never realize it exists, and they’ll simply stream Spotify’s This Is The Rolling Stones or Apple Music’s Rolling Stones Essentials playlists. Casual listeners don’t buy CDs any more. The real money is in selling tickets for the upcoming tour and in selling the big bucks vinyl + t-shirts + lithograph bundle of pointless compilations like this to the completist hardcore fans who already own every track on Honk multiple times over.

I agree. I’ve bought many CDs that I first sampled through streaming. But streaming also has let me sample and avoid turkeys such as Voodoo Lounge Live.

Man when I first heard the title HONK I thought this would be some kind of country/acoustic-leaning compilation of classic Stones deep cuts and a few outtakes spiked with a couple of brand new country-flavored Stones tunes (perhaps the ones teased on Mick's social media).

    Oh well.

I don't know how many more times I need to repeat this, but some of those tracks aren't on streaming services. You can't make a playlist with songs that aren't there

Great day for Stones fans. Amazon Japan has shipped the new Voodoo Lounge Japan br/cd set, Honk coloured vinyl box set ordered, and the Honk 3cd set(from Bull Moose). Tickets secured for the June 8th Gillette show, and Keith’s deluxe box of Talk is Cheap in 2 weeks.

No, just the regular box. Really wanted the vinyl of the bonus tracks, and the book.

Yup definitely looks cool. The box made out of the same wood grain as Keith's Fender is a nice touch.

  22. I like her, but I can go without ever hearing "Wild Horses" in any fashion ever again. I do have to say, Lady Gaga doing "Gimme Shelter" was really good, and she looked great in that outfit she was wearing. She does have her moments.
