Japan's cluster-based approach toward coronavirus disease (COVID-19) a fantasy?: Re-examining the clusters' data of January-March 2020 (東北大学文学研究科研究年報 75)
I critically examined Japan's claim of successfully implementing a cluster-based approach of retrospective contact tracing to manage COVID-19 clusters in early 2020. The findings revealed that a majority of COVID-19 cases found in Japan (until March 31, 2020) were prospectively traced or unrelated to any cluster (groups of five or more COVID-19 cases that came into contact at a common venue). This suggests that retrospective tracing played a limited role and the cluster-based approach was not implemented in the response of Japanese local public health system to COVID-19.
