This Chestnut Brown Metallic 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo was registered with its original owner in Virginia for 37 years. It was parked for 12 years before it was acquired in 2018 by its current owner, who kept a blog detailing its subsequent six-year, body-off refurbishment. In addition to refreshing its body, frame, and interior, the project included installing a Golen Engines 4.6L inline-six and overhauling the Jeep’s drivetrain, wiring, fuel system, suspension, and brakes. The truck has a four-speed manual transmission, Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, a Borla muffler, power steering, polished 15″ steel wheels, 31″ BFG KO2’s, Bilstein Shocks, JBA shorty headers, Tom Wood’s driveshafts, one-piece rear axle shafts, and a Trac-Lok rear differential. Its interior features Nutmeg vinyl upholstery, high-back bucket seats, color-keyed carpets, Polk Audio speakers, and a RetroSound stereo. This CJ-7 is offered at no reserve on dealer consignment in New Jersey with a window sticker, manufacturer’s literature, receipts, spare soft doors, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Virginia title in the owner’s name.

The truck was finished at the factory in Chestnut Brown Metallic, and the body was disassembled, media-blasted, and primed with epoxy prior to a two-stage repaint. Other exterior details include a bright grille, re-chromed bumpers, black wheel arch extensions, soft half-doors, and a bikini top.

The suspension has a 2.5″ lift with Alcan springs and Bilstein shock absorbers, and the 15″ polished steel wheels are mounted with 31×10.50″ BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. Vacuum-assisted front disc brakes are paired with rear drums for stopping power, and the system has a replacement booster, master cylinder, lines, and hardware.

No Reserve: 4.6L Stroker–Powered 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo 4-Speed

The seats are upholstered in Nutmeg vinyl over frames that were media-blasted and powder-coated, and fresh color-keyed carpeting lines the floors. Painless Performance wiring is noted, and the sound system has Polk Audio speakers wired to a RetroSound stereo with Bluetooth.

No Reserve: 4.6L Stroker–Powered 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo 4-Speed

The leather-wrapped steering wheel is mounted on a rebuilt column with a Wolff Engineering lower bearing. The dashboard has a quartz clock, an 85-mph speedometer, a tachometer that is not working, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, voltage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 92k miles, ~900 of which were added under current ownership.

No Reserve: 4.6L Stroker–Powered 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo 4-Speed

A Golen Engines 4.6-liter stroker inline-six is installed under the hood, and it has Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, a Clifford intake manifold, a FlowKooler water pump, a Be Cool radiator, a Powermaster alternator, and a Powermaster 9000 PowerMax starter. Its replacement fuel tank has an in-tank Holley fuel pump, and its 2.5″ stainless-steel exhaust system has ceramic-coated JBA shorty headers, a high-flow catalytic converter, and a Borla muffler.

No Reserve: 4.6L Stroker–Powered 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo 4-Speed

The frame was stripped, primed with Mastercoat Rust Sealer, and top-coated with Mastercoat AG111 chassis paint, and the underside of the tub was finished with bedliner coating. The four-speed manual transmission and Dana 300 transfer case were overhauled, and the drivetrain has Tom Wood’s driveshafts, a Dana 30 front axle with East Coast Gear Supply axle shafts, and an AMC 20 rear end, which has a Trac-Lok differential as well as Yukon Gear one-piece axles.

The window sticker lists initial delivery to Tysons AMC/Jeep Inc. of Vienna, Virginia, along with factory colors, equipment, and a Total Amount of $10,930.

I spent several days around this jeep as I was working on the e320 Dean and I recently sold. My first impression seeing this truck brought me back to the days when I was playing with Tonka toys. It literally reminds me of a big model toy. It’s absolutely gorgeous and the shop who preformed the work definitely took pride in this build.I love the color combo. I climbed inside and started it up, it’s definitely badass. I would have loved to take it out for a spin around the parking lot but the weather wasn’t so great. Sadly for the current owner the only person who benefits from a situation like this is the new upcoming winner of the auction. Builds like this don’t come cheap, and quite frankly if this was built in my neck of the woods it would cost even more. This truck is done right and it’s absolutely gorgeous from top to bottom, I personally wouldn’t have the heart to take it off road because it’s so pristine. I have to agree that the overhaul was definitely better than the way these came out of the factory. I know for sure the new owner is gonna love this truck. Good luck to all!

This Jeep got a lot of love at our local, Northern Virginia C&C events, and deservedly so! Imagine the Jeep CJ-7 you’d find sitting on the showroom floor in 1981.. This is that, but better – the paint quality is superior to factory, the details are pristine, and the engine is much better than what you got with a new one. I’ve enjoyed riding along in this one, and there were always folks offering thumbs-up and shouting “Nice Jeep!” at us. The winner at the end of this auction is in for an absolute treat. Best of luck here in the last few hours!!

This Jeep has everything you could possibly want in a restored CJ7. Check out Golen’s website to see how beautifully built the engine is and what they cost. All the best components, Alcan springs are top of the line, custom US made with amazing ride quality. I’m in the process of restoring an 81 and have 2X the current bid – without the Golen! Someone is going to get the best CJ I have seen on BAT in a very long time

Current bid covers the body and paint that was performed on this vehicle.

This work was completed by Southern Classics of Fredricksburg, Va. in January 2024 at a cost of $21,203.06.

That was just the body and paint !!!

This vehicle has a new engine, rebuilt transmission, all new suspension, exhaust, ect…

Oh yeah, just about EVERYTHING on this vehicle is NEW with just some break in miles.

Thinking of buying or restoring a Jeep CJ7 Laredo?

This one is already done for you all in and all the time and money has been spent.

This is a highly restored vehicle that was completed with an open checkbook.

It will sell today to the highest bidder no matter what that final number is !!!

Great opportunity for the new owner.

Best of luck !!!

Dean

@Zoegirl While I am not a Jeep CJ “expert” I did a non-frame off restoration about 10 years ago for Philip Richter of The Turtle Garage. After the paint and body was completed he decided that he wanted the ability to install a soft-top. Lee’s Garage of Long Branch NJ added the additional body fasteners for the soft-top and I remember that it was not that big of a job. I doubt the soft-top was on the vehicle more than one time=, as these rigs are best for use with the top down and the doors removed.

That was a fun restoration and the budget was minuscule compared to the money spent on this build.

The new owner of this CJ7 Laredo will be a “rock star” on the road, and it gets attention and compliments everywhere it is driven.

Best of luck !!!

what would it take to install a soft top on this beautiful CJ?

@Tudor-dnc The lift is configured via the leaf springs, which were custom made for the Jeep and the current height. You’d have to get leaf springs for the desired height. Perhaps it could be lowered slightly with shorter shackles? I haven’t researched the shackle option, just a thought.
