Dodan Thana is a shrine dedicated to Sri Sri Rishi located at Bayda, 18 km from Agia in Goalpara district of Assam. A fair is held here every year from Shukla Mahashtami to Ekadashi of Fagun. The Rabhas have been celebrating it as a national festival since The fair is held to worship Shiva (Rishi) and pay tribute to the brave king Dodan and Marukshetri, the commander of the army of Dodan. Although Shakta worship was practiced at the Dodan Mela in the past, it is now worshiped according to Vaishnava rituals.

History

[edit]

The Rabhas are an ethnic group of Sino-Tibetan origin living in Assam. According to legend, the first king of the Ravas was Dadan. This mighty king of Dadan was originally the commander of the army of the king of Ban. However, some believe that Dadan was the sister of King Ban. Others believe that Indradaman, the eldest son of King Ban, was Dadan.

The king of Bana imprisoned Usha, the daughter of the king of Bana, with a snake rope after learning that Krishna's grandson Anirudha had married her to a Gandharva inside the fortress. Hearing this, Krishna came and fought with King Bana. The battle was fought in the city of Baghdad, where the army of the king of Ban was scattered. The chief general, Dadan, was wounded in the battle and left the kingdom. Dadan came to Tura-Phulbari to his relatives including Marukshetri and established his kingdom there. [1]
