They're guides on how to lock down your system to make it more secure external of something like antivirus, they're mostly used by business and government but if you're serious about configuring your system as a hobbyist they're a useful tool for locking down unneeded features and services.
Microsoft has a page with more information so it's endorsed by them: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/compliance/regulatory/offering-cis-benchmark

what is going on here? why is reg.exe or appdata exe's blocked? everything still works?

 16280218[Quote]>>16280219>>16280222

>>16280207
reg.exe is blocked for standard users, there's no need to run it as a standard user, I escalate using a dedicated admin account as needed
%appdata% is a common location from where PUPs and Malware like to stage themselves, so I block executables from running from that location.

No idea, I configured this all myself by just reading docs and articles.
Microshart does an article on AppLocker though:

Depends on what you're doing, if you've got a high risk file not in a virus database yet, you can get fucked still, while the behavioural analysis in Defender may still pick it up due to suspicious behaviours.
I use Chudspersky thoughbeit

Why are you even using this trash instead of something competent like Malwarebytes?
It's on the same level of bloatware shit like Norton and Avast

Malwarebytes has been a meme for fucking years
You complain about bloat, yet Malwarebytes is bloated to shit now.
Here's one of their employees literally talking about all the reasons why they bloated it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Malwarebytes/comments/1qf8xtj/malwarebytes_is_bloated_and_is_no_longer_what_it/

In any objective comparison, Kaspersky crushes Malwarebytes:
https://www.security.org/antivirus/kaspersky-vs-malwarebytes/
https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/
https://av-comparatives.org/consumer/test-results/

Kaspersky lets you turn off a bunch of features, and even better, you can also turn off the NAGGING about the features you disabled, unlike something like Bitdefender where you can't disable the alerts/nags from features you disabled. Literally uses fuck all memory on my system, Defender is more resource intensive than this is.

Use what you want by the way, Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, F-Secure, Sophos, Vipre. Just please do the research yourself and don't blindly believe shit you've heard.

Is free Kaspersky even worth using? Defender is completely useless flagging only false positives and taking up almost 1gb in ram

 16280487[Quote]>>16280528

Used it since 2019 and it's always been decent, it uses the same databases as the paid version but you don't get the extra features (like the VPN, Firewall, network monitor etc).
I use TinyWall for my firewall, super lightweight and highly configurable.

Is there any point in DNSCRYPT anymore when I can just use DOH system wide on 'jeetdows 11?

 16280553[Quote]>>16280554>>16280585

DNSCrypt is a proxy and is much more highly configurable (and arguably more secure) than sending just straight DoH requests to your choice of resolver.
It depends on your threat model. Me personally, I just use sb.dns and ControlD over DoH for convenience. I don't browse much shady shit so I'm not too concerned.

 16280585[Quote]

>>16280553
I remember using an updated fork of SimpleDnsCrypt but all of the resolvers were slow as fuck even without anonymized relays
