Isekai anime are inescapable. Without fail, every season includes a few shows that send their protagonists to alternate worlds filled with magic, wonder, danger, elves, and dungeons. Oftentimes, these average guys (or gals, rarely) gain incredible abilities that allow them to lead carefree lives defined by wealth, freedom, power, and harems. Occasionally, they find themselves stuck in a dark fantasy realm where one false move could spell their end. Love or hate them, these series are popular and are here to stay.
As overexposed as this concept has become, isekai anime have an undeniable charm to them, even the so-called "trashy" ones. Even at its worst, this theme can still work as a tension-free escape from reality that asks nothing from viewers. Conversely, the best isekai anime are fantastic works of art that offer adventure, comedy, action, world-building, character growth, and stellar animation. To simplify the rummaging process, let's highlight isekai's greatest animated efforts.
Updated on May 12, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Spring 2026's new isekai anime are listed at the end of the article, but they are mostly just previews, as none of the shows are likely to make the cut. I updated this article with new subtitles and added The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat.
Reverse isekai anime deserve their own article. Also, this ranking reflects cultural impact, staying power, and influence on the modern isekai boom, not just popularity at release.
45 The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat
An OP MC Isekai Anime That Subverts Expectations

The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat

Isekai anime is packed to the brim with overpowered protagonists, to the point that I tend to just assume every new show has one of these characters. There is nothing really wrong with the concept, and it has led to many amusing series, but it is often used as a crutch rather than a proper storytelling tool. Although containing a few of this subgenre's elements, The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat grounds its protagonist's abilities in his history as a former assassin, so Lugh's powers are rooted in experience and professionalism rather than just stats. When he approaches a situation, he brings a calculated mindset that most isekai protagonists just don't have.
You've Probably Forgotten About This Isekai Anime, But it Will Have a Second Season in 2027
There is hope: a classic isekai anime will return with a new season after a long absence.
Another way this anime goes against isekai trends is by framing Lugh's journey around killing the hero instead of a big bad like the Demon King. He is given this task by the goddess who reincarnates him, and he is effectively on a mission and not a leisurely fantasy adventure. Even the power system is quite good, as it combines the world's magic with Lugh's knowledge of chemistry. Good stuff.

Isekai loves an overpowered protagonist who can blast through skyscraper-sized enemies while barely breaking a sweat. When the goddess Ristarte summons Seiya to help her save a world on the brink of annihilation, she gets a hero who is only willing to dive into threatening situations when victory is 100% assured. Basically, this means a lot of training and taking no chances during battles.
Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is a mostly lighthearted adventure built upon the love/hate dynamic between Seiya and Ristarte. Driven primarily by humor, the anime uses its protagonist's unique mindset to produce comedy gold.

As isekai anime have a habit of playing things too safe, a show that is willing to take risks should be commended. However, just because something is different does not automatically make it good, and Ishura does not leave a great first impression. In a world with many Visitors and other superpowered entities, city-destroying conflicts are always on the horizon, especially since the True Demon King's death left a power vacuum.
Ishura is structured unusually for not only an isekai but also anime in general. Rather than focusing on a single character, the show dedicates the first five episodes to introducing different OP archetypes, dedicating about 10 minutes to each. As these stories are only loosely connected, the first half of season one is confusing and hard to follow. However, things come together nicely in the second half, when all these characters clash in a war between two empires.
Although not devoid of world-building or political intrigue, Ishura's selling point is its fights pitting overpowered characters against each other, and the roster is diverse and absurd. Season 2 is a bit more focused than its predecessor, but it mostly exists for the same reason.

The son of a cult leader, Yukito, is killed by his father as part of a ritual, and he reawakens in a world with no concept of gods. Although not as exciting as he was hoping it would be, Yukito eventually comes to see his new life as a big step up from his previous existence; however, that changes when he learns that two of his friends have been chosen to be killed simply because they fear death. A lack of spirituality has, for some reason, spawned a society that treats death as a mundane event and villainizes anyone who does not share that mentality. Luckily for Yukito, his former cult's deity pays him a visit.
A Spring 2023 anime, KamiKatsu might as well be called Tonal Whiplash: The Anime, and that is somehow a compliment. The series jumps back and forth between fairly juvenile comedy and shockingly dark scenes, and the story's frantic pacing means these moments can take place within the same minute. Depending on the viewer, this isekai anime could be deemed awesome or terrible, but almost nobody will find it boring.

Nowadays, every season seems to include a villainess isekai anime, and Winter 2025 was no exception. Fortunately, these shows have been consistently decent, and From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated continued that trend. In fact, this series is one of the better representatives of this subgenre, largely thanks to a delightful protagonist and a fun twist on the otome game formula.
A dad in his 50s, Kenzaburou meets truck-kun and reincarnates as the baddie of an otome game. While he has fragments of memories of his daughter playing the game, Kenzaburou has to mostly rely on his parental instincts to navigate the challenges of adolescent relationships and prejudice. While trying to set up a romance for the game's heroine, he inadvertently sets the stage for a reverse harem for his character. In a refreshing twist, the anime also jumps back to Earth to show Kenzaburou's family, and they end up contributing in their own ways.

While far from the first to tackle the concept, .hack is generally regarded as the ancestor of video game-focused isekai anime like Sword Art Online. However, most of the anime are not part of the genre, since they usually do not revolve around characters who are trapped within a game. The main exception is .hack//Sign, the first anime set within this universe.
At its core, this story is about Tsukasa, a boy who is trapped within the virtual world of an MMO. While this premise might conjure up memories of dozens of subsequent shows, .hack/Sign has a wildly different tone than most of its successors. Moving at a purposefully slow pace, this isekai anime is surprisingly contemplative and mysterious, opting to ask challenging questions rather than provide satisfying answers. The result is a polarizing show that is ambitious but not necessarily all that entertaining.

A gate to a fantasy world appears in Japan, causing an all-out war to break out between the invading Empire and the JSDF. The latter manages to repel the opposing forces and, in the battle's aftermath, decides to send a group of soldiers into this new world. One member of that party is Itami, an otaku who eventually befriends a trio of girls who slot into fantasy archetypes.
GATE is an entertaining anime that tells both a standard and reverse isekai story. Itami is nothing more than a decent protagonist, but he is aided by a massive roster of secondary characters. His harem is filled with lovable personalities, and they make the show what it is. Admittedly, GATE's reputation has been hurt by the fact that it is pretty blatant JSDF propaganda, and your mileage may vary. Still, it is cool to see modern military equipment taking on fantasy tropes.

Hey, not everyone gets to reincarnate as a powerful human with ties to nobility. Some folks must draw the short straw, and Kumoko gets the worst of it when she starts a new life as a spider. Yes, the poor girl is just an ordinary monster, albeit one with a pretty high power ceiling. Focusing on dungeon crawling, Kumoko sets out to become her best spider-self, all the while making a few notable friends along the way.
4 Most Terrifying Spiders In Anime
Spiders can be off-putting for many people. These terrifying arachnids in anime are certain to keep fans up at night.
So I'm a Spider, So What? is a show of two halves. Whenever Kumoko takes center stage, the anime is fun, light-hearted, and even quite epic. She is an awesome MC and carries the show on her back. Unfortunately, the series is pretty evenly divided between Kumoko and the human characters (some of whom were also isekai'd), and the latter's storylines and scenes are nowhere near as captivating.

While it might not seem that obvious at a glance, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! is one of the most important isekai anime of all time. Similar to the light novel medium, this project helped propel villainess stories into the mainstream, triggering a new era of dominance that is still going strong years later. Nowadays, nearly every season seems to include one show featuring a woman reincarnated as an otome game's female baddie, and My Next Life as a Villainess got the ball rolling in a big way.
Due to the influx of similar series, Catarina's journey might not seem all that special nowadays. Like many influential anime, My Next Life as a Villainess is the prototype of this subgenre, one that sets the basics that many of its successors follow. After regaining her memories of a past life and realizing she is a villain who will die sooner rather than later, Catarina sets out to rewrite her destiny, a process she accomplishes through her irresistible charm and positive attitude. She enjoys a bit of romance, develops a harem, and even gets to occasionally show off some cool magic.
My Next Life as a Villainess is just fun, and a lot of that comes down to Catarina. She is just relentlessly endearing, and she has to genuinely work to protect herself during the first season. The sequel is not quite as good since it lacks any real tension, but it is still decent.

After being pushed to her doom, Rinko awakens as a supporting character in a fantasy novel she once read. To make matters worse, her host, Raeliana, is destined to meet an untimely end at the hands of her fiancé. As Rinko would very much like that not to happen, she sets out to strike a deal with the powerful Noah, a duke who appears charming and noble but is really quite devilish and complicated.
Best Anime Based On Manhwa, Ranked
Solo Leveling is not the only great anime based on a South Korean manhwa, and it has competition for the top spot.
Raeliana/Rinko carries the entire show on her back, and she is more than strong enough as a protagonist to bear the burden. Smart without being omnipotent, Raeliana works as a surrogate for the audience while also having a clearly defined personality that elevates her beyond self-insert leads. Noah is also fun and mysterious, with his actions and motives being difficult to pin down.
35 The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic
One Of The Best Mentor-Student Dynamics In The Isekai Space

Out of Winter 2024's many isekai anime, The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic has been the biggest surprise. The show follows Ken Usato, who is summoned to another world alongside two classmates. While the latter were picked as hero candidates by their summoning kingdom, Ken was just an accident, although he proves to be a valuable ally as he is capable of using healing magic. Before long, Ken finds himself under the tutelage of Rose, a terrifying leader who plans to whip her new student into a soldier.
The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic is a show of two halves. The first couple of episodes lean heavily into comedy, and they are consistently funny thanks to Rose's intimidating demeanor and Ken's hilarious reactions. As the season has progressed, the humor has subsided in favor of drama courtesy of a pending war with demons, which is now in full swing. Although arguably better as a comedy, The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic works quite well as an action drama, even if the animation could be slightly better.

King From Now On! starts with its protagonist, the unassuming Yuri Shibuya, having his head flushed down the toilet, an ordeal that teleports him to another universe. Before long, he finds himself crowned as Demon King, a role that puts him right in the middle of the demon world's strained relationship with humans. This bizarre start reflects the rest of the show's direction, as Kyou kara Maou! often blurs the line between silly high jinks and dramatic intensity.
King From Now On! is a relatively old show that has somewhat slipped from the public consciousness since its original run. While by no means perfect, this 2000s isekai anime is generally decent, mainly thanks to characters like Wolfram and, yes, Yuri. The show does have some pacing issues and can get a bit formulaic at times, but it is worth a watch.

At this point, isekai has seemingly done everything, at least when it comes to picking strange things for the protagonist to reincarnate as. Vending machine? Sure. Goblin? Of course. Hot springs? Why not! Most of these stories are duller than they sound since they often do not make the most of their unique circumstances, instead opting to take the audience on a fairly traditional journey. However, they can still be fun, and Reincarnated as a Sword is arguably the best "reborn as an inanimate object" isekai anime. Yes, that is an odd subgenre, but it has a couple of representatives.
A human wakes up as a sword in a fantasy world, and he fairly quickly realizes that he is quite powerful. However, every blade needs a wielder, and the protagonist finds his better half in Fran, a beastman who has led a difficult life so far. Reincarnated as a Sword's brilliance lies in the father-daughter dynamic that develops between these two, which grows naturally and believably throughout season 1. The anime blends action, comedy, and quiet moments surprisingly well, creating one of the better-rounded shows in the genre.

A bit of a slow-burn success story, The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash takes a short while to fully find its feet and tone. Initially, the anime can be a touch overwhelming, with the first episode introducing Ivy (the protagonist), the concept of skills that determine people's worth, and the very subtle isekai element. Rather than start with the whole reincarnation process, Weakest Tamer has an MC who is guided by a voice born from their past life, and they are not directly heard either.
Due to getting a zero-star rating as a tamer, Ivy is seen as deadweight by her village, to the point of being marked for death. She goes on the run and tries to survive in the wild, while gradually making connections with other villages and towns. Despite this fairly dark premise, Weakest Tamer is mostly a cute and relaxing slow-life story, one driven by a lovable and endearing protagonist. Also, the animation is shockingly good, way better than most isekai anime.
31 Grimgar: Ashes And Illusions

On the surface, Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions seems like any other game-themed isekai anime: teenagers wake up in a strange world constructed on MMO tropes and they must get by. The thing that separates Grimgar from most other shows is that while the world might pull from MMOs, it is not governed by their rules. Minor threats in other anime can be deadly in Grimgar, and death is not something that can just be waved off.
10 Best Isekai Adventure Anime, Ranked
Combining adventure with isekai has proven to be an entertaining and effective mix for anime.
Grimgar moves at quite a lethargic pace, focusing more on establishing its quite big cast of characters as it (harshly) eases them into its world. Unfortunately, the anime only scratches the surface of the source material, ending after just 12 episodes. While still worth watching, the show is little more than a sample of the light novel.
30 Uncle From Another World

Suffering multiple delays that caused its single cour run to stretch over nine months, Uncle from Another World started hot and ended ice-cold. By the time the final episode aired, the comedy anime was old news, relegating it to a footnote of 2022's anime offerings rather than a potential highlight. As frustrating as these issues were, nowadays, Uncle from Another World can be watched in its entirety; however, is it worth it?
Well, the answer is subjective, as most comedies tend to be. After spending nearly two decades in another world, Ojisan awakens in a hospital bed on Earth and reunites with his nephew, Takafumi. While initially skeptical of his outlandish claim, Takafumi becomes a believer when Ojisan displays magical powers, including a TV-like ability that acts as a flashback machine to show his adventures in the other world.
Uncle from Another World uses its clever premise to parody isekai tropes, all the while throwing a bunch of references to the '90s (and, mainly, Sega). That said, the show's humor is rather juvenile, particularly when it comes to Ojisan's interactions with a female elf, so it might not be to everyone's fancy.

Fushigi Yugi is a minor classic that, while far from unwatchable, has not aged especially well over the last 25 years. In this day and age, someone's appreciation for this show might come down to whether they have any nostalgic attachment to it, or if they are at least fond of older shojo tropes. Miaka reads a book that sends her to another world, and she quickly learns that she is a priestess who will play a pivotal role in conjuring a god.
Miaka can only complete this ritual if she is, well, a virgin, so quite a few episodes revolve around ensuring this remains a fact. Containing a love triangle and a fully realized fantasy world that is fascinating to learn about, Fushigi Yugi is an engrossing series despite its share of frustrations. Considering its animation was not even great for the mid-'90s, this anime could really use a modern adaptation.
28 The Rising Of The Shield Hero

The Rising of the Shield Hero's reputation declined as its first season progressed, and the sequel only exacerbated matters. Naofumi Iwatani is summoned to a fantasy world to serve as its shield hero, only for the protagonist to be falsely accused of a crime and then shunned.
Although far from subtle, The Rising of the Shield Hero's opening few episodes are purposefully infuriating and gripping. They also suggest this is going to be a more mature and darker than normal isekai anime, something the series doesn't fully live up to later down the line. Even though this anime is divisive, those seeking a power fantasy-style show can do much worse than The Rising of the Shield Hero.

Digimon Adventure

A beloved classic that helped introduce countless children to the exciting world of anime, Digimon Adventure is not commonly cited among isekai shows, perhaps because most people watched it before they were familiar with the term. While the show spends a decent chunk of time in the human world, Digimon Adventure predominantly revolves around the DigiDestined's time in the Digital World.
Best Digimon Games, Ranked
Digimon Story: Time Stranger is fantastic, but is it the greatest Digimon game of all time? It might just be...
Focusing on the original series, Digimon Adventure has aged shockingly well. The anime confidently blends action, drama, humor, and character development to craft an epic journey that continues to be celebrated more than two decades following its end. Digimon Tamers is also fantastic, but the main characters spend far less time in the Digital World than Tai and company.

The best Winter 2023 isekai anime barely mentions its protagonist's reincarnation, despite its title. Anisphia is a science-driven princess in a magical world, and her interest in the field stems from visions of a past life set in a realm with flying vehicles. Rather than concentrating solely on the princess, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady divides its time between Anisphia and Euphyllia, the latter of whom was set to be the kingdom's new queen before her engagement to the prince fell through.
Their relationship serves as the story's beating heart, and they complement each other beautifully. Strong-willed and headstrong, Anisphia inspires Euphyllia to live for herself, something she is not accustomed to doing since she has dedicated her existence to filling the role thrust onto her.

Written and directed by Shingo Natsume, whose previous credits include One-Punch Man, Space Dandy, and Boogiepop and Others, Sonny Boy is an unconventional coming-of-age story that plays out like a more surreal version of Peter Pan. A group of students are sent to a strange island, and some of them develop supernatural powers. Naturally, this influences the characters' dynamics and power balance, leading to quite a few harrowing sequences.
Sonny Boy is unpredictable, disjointed, and not especially satisfying. The anime leaves quite a few questions unanswered, and picking up all the story's subtleties will require a second viewing. That said, the anime's ambition cannot be faulted, and this is evident in its presentation and ambiguous storytelling.

Coming a bit out of nowhere, The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess is a unique case. Depending on how strict your definition of "anime" is, this 2025 series might not qualify, as it is a Chinese rather than Japanese production. However, The Fated Magical Princess looks like an anime and is available on Crunchyroll.
The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess is a Chinese TV series based on a South Korean web novel that aired as part of the Fall 2025 anime lineup. Isekai brings nations together.
Regardless of whether you consider this to be an anime or not, The Fated Magical Princess's quality cannot be refuted, and it tells an isekai tale drenched in fairy tale charm. Fittingly enough, the protagonist finds herself living as the princess of a novel, one who meets a cruel end. Using her knowledge of the book and sheer charm, Athanasia sets out to endear herself to her cold father, while also developing magical abilities that are jaw-dropping (both in-universe and through their presentation).
With gorgeous animation, lovable characters, and a decade-spanning story, The Fated Magical Princess is a triumphant work of art. More than anything, The Fated Magical Princess demonstrates isekai anime's reach in 2025, as the concept has broken entirely free from just Japanese studios. With this show and Lord of Mysteries, we are getting more original stories than ever before, and it will hopefully continue in 2026 and beyond.

The most unexpected isekai anime of Winter 2025, Zenshu came out of nowhere due to being an original series and the fact that MAPPA mostly kept its premise under wraps. An ace creator who rose to superstardom after directing her first anime series, Natsuko Hirose is struggling with writer's block as she works on her second project. One day, she chokes on a piece of food and wakes up in the universe of a polarizing movie that has fascinated her since childhood. If that was not peculiar enough, Natsuko awakens the ability to bring to life her drawings, allowing her to change the story's trajectory and (hopefully) discover a happier ending.
Zenshu is not only delightful but also offers a self-aware take on the isekai formula that is not a parody that mocks the concept's tropes. Natsuko is a fun and relatable protagonist, while the "heroes" of the world are charming throwbacks inspired by classic fantasy anime of yesteryear. Also, MAPPA's animation is fantastic, which should hardly be surprising. After a really strong start, the anime loses a bit of momentum during its middle stretch of episodes, only to pick back up toward the end.
22 Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-

Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-'s first season is an enjoyable power fantasy that largely sticks to the genre's standard tropes, which is fine as long as they are executed well. The story's defining feature is that Makoto Misumi, the protagonist, walks the line between being a traditional overpowered protagonist and a parody of one. His looks are constantly mocked, and his summoning sequence is close in spirit to KonoSuba; however, he has quietly transformed into a more conventional MC, while still managing to remain likable. Season 2 emphasizes Makoto's strengths by shining a light on two other summoned heroes who are twisted versions of isekai protagonists (albeit, one more so than the other).
The 25 Best Isekai Anime With Overpowered Main Characters, Ranked
Isekai anime love overpowered protagonists who can level cities on their own, and the very best shows demonstrate why OP MCs are so much fun.
Moving beyond Makoto, Tsukimichi has a strong roster of supporting characters who are allowed to develop identities that go beyond their unbreakable allegiances to their master. In lesser shows, Tomoe and Mio would be little more than cheerleaders who exist solely to stroke Makoto's ego; fortunately, they shine through as proper characters who are defined by their histories along with their relationships. Season 2 is better than its predecessor, which is decent in its own right.
21 Now And Then, Here And There

- Release Date
- October 14, 1999

Released right at the turn of the century, Now and Then, Here and There is the ideal option for anyone who wishes to take a break from isekai power fantasies. An ordinary boy, Shuu meets a mysterious girl, gets whisked away by terrifying monsters to a desolate reality, and then spends roughly the next 13 episodes going through hell.
Now and Then, Here and There is a character-driven anime, and its focus goes beyond just the main characters. The 1999 isekai series does a splendid job exploring its roster of unforgettable personalities, and it accomplishes an incredible amount considering it is a single-cour anime.

A classic anime, Magic Knight Rayearth is much more than meets the eye. Three school girls are teleported to Cephiro, a world that emphasizes a person's will, and they quickly find themselves on an adventure to rescue a princess. In its early hours, Magic Knight Rayearth plays things relatively safe, delivering a lighthearted action-adventure narrative with quirky characters, exhilarating fights, and amusing villains.
Don't Miss The 5 Biggest Upcoming Isekai Anime
Isekai anime are eternal, and these upcoming series will be big parts of the genre's legacy for 2026.
As things progress, the anime becomes gradually darker, a change that works in the show's favor. Although they start out as somewhat stereotypical, the three leads develop quite a bit, particularly in the second season.
A remake should be coming out in 2026.

Another of her creations is Inuyasha, the epic tale of romance and action that managed to maintain a high quality of storytelling for over a decade. This series defines what a great isekai show should be while setting the standard of quality for the entire genre. If one wants to start delving into the world of isekai then Inuyasha is the place to start.
Inuyasha is ranked somewhat low as it just barely qualifies as isekai.
18 The Vision Of Escaflowne
We Used To Get So Many Great Mecha Isekai Anime... What Happened?

The Vision of Escaflowne
- Release Date
- 1996 - 1996
- Japanese Title
- Tenkuu no Escaflowne
- Studio
- Sunrise
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator(s)
- Shōji Kawamori
- Number of Episodes
- 26
Sunrise's The Vision of Escaflowne was awesome when it came out in 1996 and age has done very little to dull its appeal. Hitomi Kanzaki finds herself in a strange world called Gaea that has mecha, immaculate architecture that feels both familiar and alien, and political intrigue. She also meets a prince, Van Fanel, who initially comes across as bratty but eventually proves to be far more nuanced. Hidden depth is a staple of nearly all the main characters.
The Vision of Escaflowne balances multiple genres as it tries to cater to both male and female audiences. The isekai anime offers action, adventure, and romance; more importantly, it juggles these elements incredibly well. The animation, while clearly of its era, is also consistently fantastic.
17 Sword Art Online

Arguably the most well-known isekai series, Sword Art Online has quite a polarizing reception, a trait worsened by overexposure. SAO is named after an in-universe game that, one day, traps all of its players within its world. From there, the story revolves around Kirito, a powerful black knight-type character who forms a charming dynamic with Asuna, along with a myriad of other (female) characters.
Best Isekai Anime Like Sword Art Online
If you loved Sword Art Online, there's a whole world of anime waiting for you to discover. Here are some excellent shows for SAO fans.
SAO has its share of issues, and some seasons are certainly better than others, but the anime's popularity speaks for itself. For all its flaws, SAO persevered as a cornerstone of anime in general, helping to introduce millions of people to the industry and, specifically, the "trapped in a game" concept. Hell, an argument could be made that Sword Art Online isn't even really isekai; however, it will always be synonymous with the concept. If this ranking prioritized cultural impact above everything else, SAO would be first.
Along with the main show, Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online is a very good spin-off, although that is 100% not isekai.
16 Campfire Cooking In Another World With My Absurd Skill

Tsuyoshi Mukouda is summoned to a new world by a kingdom searching for heroes, but he is left to his own accord due to his seemingly weak ability. Rather than overwhelming strength or an affinity for every magic type, Tsuyoshi can order Earth-based items through an app. Using this service, the human indulges in his cooking hobby, which quickly nets him a very powerful and very hungry familiar.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill follows Tsuyoshi's relaxing adventure as he tries to live his best isekai life. So far, the anime has stayed away from fights or even an overarching narrative, opting for a lighthearted and casual tone instead. Tsuyoshi's friendships with his familiars, Fel and Sui, serve as the story's heart, and these interactions have been a constant delight.
The 2025 sequel season is even better than its predecessor, solely for the fact that it adds an adorable dragon to the main roster. Campfire Cooking might not be groundbreaking, but it is one of the most well-rounded isekai anime ever. The animation is fantastic for a slow-life series, and the characters are just relentlessly charming. Although mostly focusing on cooking and relaxing exploration, the anime occasionally throws out a short but bombastic action sequence. Also, Campfire Cooking is genuinely funny.
15 The Boy And The Beast
One of Mamoru Hosoda's Worst Films Is Still Pretty Good

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, The Boy and the Beast tells the touching tale of two outcasts who come together and then spend the best part of an hour yelling at each other. Ren, a kid abandoned by his family, follows Kumatetsu, an immature beast, to a secret city called Shibuten that exists beyond the gaze of humanity. Due to their stubborn natures, Ren and Kumatetsu take a long while to warm up to one another, but they also can’t help but strike a special bond.
The Boy and the Beast is a generally gorgeous film that touches upon some interesting themes and has a great protagonist in Ren. The second hour might feel a bit rushed and concludes with a somewhat unsatisfying final act, but the rest of the movie is strong.

- Hoods Drifters Studio
- Number of Episodes
- 15
- Based On

Bringing together a who’s who of historical figures, Drifters is a bloody and gloriously outlandish isekai series that does wonders with its absurd premise. Essentially, important figures from history are dropped into a fantasy world to duke it out as either Drifters or Ends.
Japan Has Officially Decided The Best Isekai Anime Of All Time
The Isekai genra's very best has been revealed, and it isn't what fans expected.
Drifters act as a resistance force against the Ends’ oppressive regime, leading to plenty of awesome moments such as Toyohisa Shimazu facing off against an insane Jeanne d'Arc. Drifters’ short run does somewhat hurt its appeal as the story is far from complete, but the available content is absolutely top-notch. In its brief existence, this anime delivered some of the most memorable fights and characters in isekai history, and its Fate-esque premise grants Drifters a wider appeal than most other isekai.
13 The Twelve Kingdoms
A Rare Isekai Anime That Genuinely Feels Epic

- Number of Episodes
- 45
- Based On
- Novel
- Creator
- Fuyumi Ono
- Streaming Service(s)

Based on the popular novel series by Fuyumi Ono, The Twelve Kingdoms is a phenomenal piece of storytelling. While the novels focus on multiple kingdoms inspired by Chinese Mythology, the anime narrows it down to just the kingdom of Kei.
This allows for a more in-depth look at the kingdom itself and the main character, Yoko Nakajima. Yoko is a very likable protagonist and her challenges are real enough to captivate fans from many diverse backgrounds. While the anime has a somewhat slow start, it picks up considerable momentum as it moves along and introduces more of the world.

There is nothing wrong with escapist fantasy stories; anime serves as a great way to briefly leave behind reality and enjoy a wild adventure free of much in the way of tension. Isekai has proven to be ideal for this format, but there are a couple of shows that go against this structure.
Ascendance of a Bookworm's Urano Motosu is a book lover who finds herself reincarnated in the body of a poor and fragile young girl called Myne in a fantasy world with clear social class division. As she doesn't have access to books, Myne decides to make her own. Ascendance of a Bookworm tackles complicated themes in a refreshingly mature way, while also presenting a likable protagonist driven by a unique desire seldom touched upon in anime.

10 Saga Of Tanya The Evil
Evil Is Fun, Evil Is Tiny

- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Based On
- Light Novel
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
On occasion, an isekai comes along that switches things up by pushing an anti-hero or straight-up villain as the protagonist. While Youjo Senki’s English title paints a picture of a far more sinister main character than the anime actually delivers, Tanya Degurechaff’s detached and cold nature makes for a fascinating watch, especially due to the anime’s grim setting.
When a guy on the verge of death challenges a self-appointed god called Being X, the latter reincarnates the former as a girl in a war-torn world. Using her familiarity with the World Wars, Tanya sets out to survive and prove Being X wrong. Although it does lean into OP fantasy at times, Saga of Tanya the Evil sets itself apart through its WW1 aesthetic, fusion of scientific weaponry and magic, and Tanya just being an all-around incredible protagonist. She lives up to her moniker, and she manages to be widely entertaining while remaining purely evil.
9 Log Horizon
A Brilliant, Grounded-ish Look Into The "Stuck In A Game" Concept

- Studio
- Satelight, Studio Deen
- Number of Episodes
- 62
- Based On
- Light Novel
- Creator
- Mamare Touno

Starting off as just another MMORPG-based isekai, Log Horizon quickly set itself apart with its massively intelligent writing. Unlike some other shows, once the main characters are transported into the world of Elder Tale, they set about forming the kind of world they have always dreamed of.
This show is smart and well-paced, using action to its maximum potential by not relying on it as a crutch during slower moments. None of the challenges of forming a new society and ensuring a peaceful existence are brushed over. Log Horizon is one of the most interesting isekai of all time, and the slower pace works in its favor.
As great as the first season is, the sequels are nowhere near as good.
8 Overlord
An OP Protagonist Slowly Takes Over The World

One of the most popular and creative isekai series to be released in recent years is Overlord. Momonga gets stuck as his strong character, Ainz Ooal Gown, in a world very similar to an MMO he used to play. As the Lord Ruler of Nazarick, Momonga's priority is the lives of his people, and he does not take threats lightly. Overlord's protagonist does not necessarily start as "evil", but he certainly grows into that role, particularly in the third and fourth seasons.
This epic, funny, and heartfelt show places a critical eye on several issues that other anime tend to brush over. For instance, it focuses on what a being of near-limitless power might feel when placed in a situation that promotes domination on a global scale. Also, being trapped within a game that is shut down, while not an entirely new concept, is an intriguing take on the stranger in a strange land trope that many isekai utilize.
7 No Game No Life
A World Built Around Games Makes For A Great Watch (Shame About The Nonexistent Sequel, Though)

No Game, No Life

- Number of Episodes

- Based On
- Light Novel
- Creator

No Game No Life is...odd. Like, Madhouse's anime is a classic at this point, and people have been craving a sequel for pretty much a decade. Its concept is not only great but also unique for the genre. Sora and Shiro are super undefeated gamers, and they are summoned to a world called Disboard by its god, who wants to defeat the siblings. In this universe, everything is decided through games, so the main duo have to use their expertise to help a princess and, eventually, take down a deity. Each arc revolves around a different type of game, which keeps things feeling fresh. Finally, Madhouse's animation is great, comfortably among the studio's best efforts of the 2010s.
No Game No Life is an absolute blast for 70% of its run, but the remaining 30% can be a deal-breaker. Frankly, the show has some rather controversial fanservice, while the humor revolving around Princess Steph is divisive to say the least. These elements are mostly irrelevant to the core story, but they are a constant presence throughout the season. As such, they can really hurt the anime's overall quality.
6 Lord of Mysteries
Tough To Follow At Times, But Worth The Effort

Lord of Mysteries
- Release Date
- June 28, 2025
- Creator
- Cuttlefish That Loves Diving
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
OK, here is a bit of an exception. Lord of Mysteries is a Chinese Donghua, which technically means it is not an anime. However, the show is available on Crunchyroll and was released alongside the Summer 2025 season, so you should be able to access it without too many issues. More importantly, the series is AMAZING. Seriously, it might go down as the best "isekai" anything of 2025, as long as you survive an overwhelming opening episode that throws you in the deep end. Just to be clear, Lord of Mysteries is great from the start, but you might need to push through some early confusion. Your effort will be rewarded.
Zhou wakes up as Klein in an alternate world based on Victorian England, and he sets out to find a way back to his universe. However, he becomes embroiled in a power system that has unlimited potential, and he joins a group that deals with mysteries that threaten the fabric of reality. Smart and strong but not unbeatable, Klein needs to be a fast learner if he wants to survive.
Lord of Mysteries has top-notch animation, a unique setting, and an exciting story, albeit one that arguably moves a bit too quickly. Season 1 went well enough that a sequel has already been confirmed.
5 KonoSuba: God's Blessing On This Wonderful World!
The Funniest Isekai Anime

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Isekai is a concept rather than a genre; therefore, it includes thrillers, character pieces, historical dramas, and potentially even horror. Naturally, there are plenty of isekai comedies, and none arguably do it better than KonoSuba. Often coming across as a parody of isekai tropes, the show follows Kazuma, a teenager who dies in a ridiculous fashion but is given a second chance by (a not-so-graceful) goddess named Aqua.
When asked to pick a single thing to take with him into the new world, Kazuma goes with Aqua, a decision he occasionally regrets in the future. As Kazuma puts together a gang of misfits, KonoSuba embarks on a string of irreverent misadventures that often produce big laughs.

This show somehow manages to follow many isekai tropes while at the same time either breaking or improving them. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime manages to rise above its simple premise to craft some of the most engaging characters in not just isekai but anime in general.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Species
The main cast of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is filled with interesting characters. Here are some basics you should know about each one.
The show has managed to earn its spot in anime history, and it is more than well-deserved. One of the anime's strongest points is its characters and how they have evolved as the story has gone on. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is also capable of juggling quite a few different strengths, be it comedy, action, or even political intrigue. The latter is a bit exhausting in season 3, mostly due to taking up a lot of time, but the writing is generally good.
The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is also a solid spin-off that is well worth watching for those who want to spend some more time with this franchise's characters.
3 Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is probably the most polarizing isekai anime of all time. Based on a popular light novel series, the story follows a NEET who is reincarnated in a fantasy world with his memories intact and a direct line to a god-like figure. Due to being "mature" for his age, Rudeus gets a head start on his magical development, allowing him to become a powerhouse. However, he is still a deeply flawed person who carries scars from his past life, along with quite a few unsavory personality traits.
Mushoku Tensei: Most Powerful Mages, Ranked
These individuals are considered to be the most powerful because of the enormous dangers they represent to their society because of their magic.
Rudeus can be quite unlikable, especially during the first season. He regularly invades other people's personal space by taking advantage of his youthful appearance, and he is rather self-absorbed as well. While he has shown growth throughout the story, his development is subtle and periodically undermined by unnecessary wish-fulfillment comedic moments. He might not be the most amiable protagonist ever, but he is more complex than most of the isekai genre's MCs.
Moving away from Rudeus, Mushoku Tensei shines in its world-building and storytelling. The former is perfectly paced and presented, gradually immersing viewers in a dark fantasy universe that has a clear history that extends way beyond the lead's bubble. The central plot is generally captivating, and it is not afraid to shake things up from arc to arc. Season 2 is wildly different from its predecessor since it is basically a school-based slice of life, albeit with a peculiar hook.
2 The Eminence In Shadow
The Ultimate Parody Of Overpowered Protagonists

The Eminence in Shadow amplified many prototypical isekai tropes – an overpowered protagonist, an endless harem of girls who follow the male lead without question, convoluted world-building – until they reach ridiculous heights. Based on a popular light novel series, this anime can be described as a satire, slapstick comedy, power fantasy, or a dark action show, and all these descriptions would fit the bill. However, The Eminence in Shadow's brilliance lies in its combination of all these elements, crafting an experience that exemplifies isekai at its best while also poking fun at its more polarizing elements.
At the heart of this absurdity is Cid, a guy with grand (and stupid) ambitions who reincarnates in a world that allows him to fulfill them. Cid wants to be the shadow that guides society's hand, so he creates a make-belief to actualize this dream. As the leader of Shadow Garden, the protagonist guides his army of powerful girls as they fight off the Cult of Diablos. While Cid largely thinks he is just playing pretend, everyone else is 100% serious, and both enemies and allies tend to misread the lead's actions as being far more complex than they truly are.
Cid's obliviousness reaches the point of contrivance fairly quickly in the anime, but viewers should just go along with it since the show is nevertheless worth it.

Quite possibly the best isekai anime to focus on a down-and-out regular guy, Re: Zero- Starting Life In Another World is a modern classic. Many of the standard isekai tropes are on display in this series, but they are transcended by the overall quality of the writing. The character of Subaru is grounded and likable, while the rest of the cast is equally engaging. The first season, in particular, managed to set itself apart from all the other isekai anime that were released at the time within just a handful of episodes.
Now, Re: Zero can leave a bad first impression. Subaru is initially quite obnoxious since he seems to be self-aware of the fact he is in an isekai. However, this plays into the story extremely well, and the anime gradually breaks down Subaru's defenses and arrogance, leading to a few genuinely uncomfortable but powerful moments. Even after these turning points, the protagonist's flaws are not just instantly forgotten, and he regularly makes dumb mistakes that have consequences. The secondary characters also received quite a bit of development, especially in seasons 2 and 3.
The Best Isekai Anime of Every Year of the 2010s
The 2010s had some of the best Isekai anime out there. Here's the best from each year of the decade.
Honorable Mentions: So-Bad-It's-Good Isekai Anime That Are Memorable In Their Own Right

Trash is a term of endearment for isekai, and there are plenty of shows that are objectively not great but subjectively really fun. Honestly, I could list dozens of series that fit this category, but let's keep it to just five anime that I could not justify including in the main list (despite really wanting to).
- Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-: The pig isekai anime. Yes, it exists, and yes, it is awful. However, Butareba is strangely captivating, as there is always this feeling that there is more going on than seems to be the case.
- Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells – The edgiest isekai anime to ever edge, Failure Frame is awfully entertaining despite having a try-hard protagonist, an absurdly over-the-top villainess, and animation that strives for mediocrity but rarely reaches it.
- In Another World With My Smartphone – A somewhat infamous isekai anime, Smartphone is often heralded as an example of the genre at its least creative. Honestly, its reputation is mostly earned, but the series knows that it is blatant harem wish fulfillment.
- My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me! – An isekai anime about an OP protagonist who goes around killing OP isekai archetypes. This anime should be a lot better than it is, but I cannot lie, it is fun to see Yogiri kill a demon lord by accident.
- Tales of Wedding Rings – Isekai harems are plentiful, but this show is THE isekai harem. I mean, the story literally involves Haruto assembling a harem of princesses to hopefully save the world. Like, the anime isn't great, but it is committed to the bit.
New Isekai Anime Of Spring 2026

After one of the genre's weakest seasons in a long time, Spring 2026 is really picking up the slack, delivering sequels to some of the biggest shows of all time. Re:Zero, TenSura, Ascendance of a Bookworm, Farming Life in Another World, and Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun are all airing new seasons.
Admittedly, Spring 2026's sequel showcase comes at the expense of new adaptations, as only three shows qualify. While still too early to say if they will actually be worthwhile, none of them hit the ground running to such an extent that they are 100% must-watch. Still, let's go through each one of them, as they are quite different from each other.
My Ribdiculous Reincarnation

- Japanese Title: Megami "Isekai Tensei Nani ni Naritai desu ka" Ore "Yuusha no Rokkotsu de"
- Based On: Light Novel by Antai
- Studio: Qzil.la, S.o.K
- Where to Watch: Crunchyroll
For the most part, I can tell whether I will like a show by the end of the first episode... but My Ribdiculous Reincarnation still dumbfounds me 5 episodes into its run. Not the story, which is easy enough to follow, but whether I enjoy it or not. This isekai anime throws a lot at the audience and never takes a second to catch its breath. It is relentless in a way that is exhausting rather than gripping, and the pacing is so quick that the jokes are not given enough room to properly land. Still, the premise is fun, and the visuals were creative for the genre.
So, what is this show about? Well, My Ribdiculous Reincarnation is a parody of isekai on the whole. After dying in a way so pathetic that it even makes KonoSuba's Kazuma's death seem dignified, Ore finds himself up for reincarnation. However, as all the popular roles have waiting lists that last thousands of years, Ore decides to go with the most niche reincarnation imaginable: A hero's rib.
Now, you are probably wondering how an anime about a rib could work, and the answer is that My Ribdiculous Reincarnation isn't actually about that. Ore's life as a rib is summarized in a few minutes, and he will now reincarnate into something else. Honestly, this premise is fantastic and allows for the exploration of a wide array of universes.
The main issue is Ore, who is energetic but also kind of annoying. He is horny, bone-headed, and reacts in the same way to nearly everything.
The Strongest Job is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional)!

- Japanese Title: Saikyou no Shokugyou wa Yuusha demo Kenja demo Naku Kanteishi (Kari) Rashii desu yo?
- Based On: Light Novel by Atekichi
- Studio: Studio Flad
- Where to Watch: Crunchyroll
Let's go from one of the most unorthodox isekai anime in years to one of the most typical. The Strongest Job is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional) is exactly the show you think it is, for better or worse. Hibiki reincarnates in a world as his younger self, and he is classified as an appraiser. Misunderstood and generally considered undesirable, this job is actually the most powerful, as long as the user knows what they are doing. Although not immediately a walking nuke, Hibiki is quickly learning how to make good use of his appraisal skills.
I don't really have anything to say about The Strongest Job is Apparently Not a Hero or a Sage, but an Appraiser (Provisional). The series is fine and, well, uneventful. Every season has a few of these types of anime, ones that are watchable but struggle to leave any impression.
An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess

- Japanese Title: Jishou Akuyaku Reijou na Konyakusha no Kansatsu Kiroku.
- Based On: Light Novel by Shiki
- Studio: Ashi Productions
- Where to Watch: Crunchyroll
So far, this has been Spring 2026's best new isekai anime, and it offers a fun twist on the villainess concept. Rather than revolving solely around the reincarnated girl, An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess pushes Prince Cecil as its protagonist, and we get to see Bertia through his eyes. Claiming that their world is actually part of a game, and that she is its villain, Bertia's story befuddles and amuses Cecil, who is absolutely desperate for some excitement to come into his life. As far as concepts go, this one is relatively inspired. Admittedly, the show is still mostly telling a standard isekai villain story, but the change in perspective is refreshing.

FAQ
Q: What is isekai?
At its core, isekai involves a character going from their world to another, and they generally cannot go back. This could be done via reincarnation, a summoning, or by the protagonist becoming trapped in a game.
Q: What is the darkest isekai anime?
Hmm, the answer depends on what you mean by "dark." If we are talking gore, then Drifters would be a topic pick. If we are talking heavy themes and horror-ish imagery, Re:Zero is probably the darkest.
Q: Is Sword Art Online an isekai?
Yes, but only certain arcs. The "trapped in a game" premise is almost its own thing by this point, but it fundamentally revolves around a protagonist who is stuck in a world that is not their own. That fits SAO's Aincrad arc perfectly, but not the subsequent sagas.
Q: Are modern isekai better than older ones?
They both have their positives. The classics that came out before the isekai boom are not as married to the concept's tropes as newer shows; however, most of the greatest isekai anime came out in the last decade.
