Last updated on April 27, 2026 by Mark Sammut: A section recommending Spring 2026's best comedy anime has been added. It is a pretty funny season!
After an exhausting day at work or school, I find that nothing eases the mind and body better than a good, hearty laugh. The best comedy anime are the ultimate medicine that helps make life's challenges a bit more manageable, and they tend to be pretty timeless. While plenty of popular anime incorporate humor to an extent, battle shonen series usually sprinkle in chuckles rather than prioritizing them. Fortunately, hundreds of anime exist solely to spark giggles in viewers.
Comedy is a staple of fiction and, especially, anime, and every new season features a bunch of shows that represent the genre. Along with highlighting a couple of currently airing series, let us also go through the funniest anime ever, just to make sure we all have something to turn to when we need a good laugh.
Quick Picks: Best Comedy Anime To Watch Right Now
Just to simplify the recommendation process, the following table highlights a few recommendations for different requirements and subgenres. We will go into the full rankings of the best comedy anime after this point.

40 Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist
In A World Where Lewd Humor Is Outlawed, A Rebel Force Rises Against The Government

Shimoneta
- Release Date
- July 4, 2015
- Japanese Title
- Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai
- Studio
- J.C.Staff
- Based On
- Light Novel
- Creator
- Hirotaka Akagi
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
Who doesn't love a good-old dirty joke? Well, in Shimoneta's Japan, the government has outlawed lewd thoughts and acts. This wacky anime envisions a future where moral authoritarianism reigns supreme, forbidding anybody from using low-brow humor. Fortunately, this dystopian hellscape has not destroyed humanity's capacity for dirty punchlines, giving rise to a rebel force led by Ayame, a student who is willing to take on the country's overlords.
Shimoneta is a high-concept comedy that pokes fun at dystopian stories while still being a respectable example of one. While clearly meant to be absurd, the premise works due to the show's commitment, as Shimoneta does not pull its punches even a little bit. The concept seeps into the wordplay, situational comedy, and character development, and the anime packs in as many jokes as possible. Although Ayame is a pretty good female lead, the star of the story is Anna, the student council president, who goes through quite an unpredictable and chaotic journey.
Not everything works, but Shimoneta deserves all the praise in the world for embracing absurdity.
39 School Rumble
The Chaos Of Romcom Misunderstandings

School Rumble
- Release Date
- 2004 - 2010-00-00
- Studio
- Studio Comet
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator(s)
- Jin Kobayashi
A cult classic, School Rumble is somewhat polarizing, but it is still arguably the best romance parody anime. In a school that has a misunderstanding pandemic, every student seems to misread signals, with everything snowballing to the point of pure madness. While always over-the-top, School Rumble just becomes weirder and weirder as it progresses, with season 2 almost feeling like a precursor to the absurdity of something like Nichijou.
Quite a few of the characters are great, but Kenji steals the show as a delinquent with a soft side, and his humor is entirely character-driven rather than relying on gags (which is the case for most of the other students). School Rumble doesn't only parody romance either, as it covers stuff like sports and battle shonen anime too.
38 Hozuki's Coolheadedness
A Hellishly Funny Anime

Hozuki's Coolheadedness
- Release Date
- 2014 - 2018
- Network
- MBS, Tokyo MX, Sun TV, BS11
- Directors
- Hiro Kaburagi
- Japanese Title
- Hoozuki no Reitetsu
- Studio
- Wit Studio, Studio Deen
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Natsumi Eguchi
- Number of Episodes
- 39
- Streaming Service(s)
- HIDIVE
Hell does not run itself. That's Hozuki's Coolheadedness' entire premise, as the anime turns the afterlife into a workplace comedy. Although second on the totem pole, the eponymous demon effectively keeps hell ticking, a job that is not only very important but also rather difficult. Calm, collected, and armed with a massive club, Hozuki takes himself very seriously, and he expects the same from his subordinates. If they do not meet his expectations, the demon will not hesitate to set them straight, and their education will be painful.
Although not packed with laugh-out-loud moments, Hozuki's Coolheadedness combines a likable roster of characters with a fresh setting to craft an easy-to-watch series. Along with producing its share of laughs, the anime provides an accessible and charming look into Japanese mythology, managing to be both funny and educational.
37 Mr. Osomatsu
The Worst Siblings In Anime

Mr. Osomatsu
- Release Date
- October 6, 2015
- Japanese Title
- Osomatsu-san
- Studio
- Studio Pierrot
- Based On
- Manga, Osomatsu-kun
- Creator
- Fujio Akatsuka
- Number of Episodes
- 75
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, YouTube
Mr. Osomatsu is very Japanese, and that goes beyond just the setting. Osomatsu-kun is a classic about the six Matsuno brothers. While the original manga and its anime adaptations have their share of silliness, they are mostly wholesome comedies designed for children. The 2015 continuation takes things in a wildly different direction, opting for irreverent humor as it depicts the sextuplets as NEETs who have amounted to nothing and also spend all their time doing nothing. To be fair, they are also surrounded by mostly self-absorbed people.
Although familiarity with the older shows elevates the experience, Mr. Osomatsu can be enjoyed in isolation, as the characters are more than hilarious enough to work outside that context. Just to be clear, the siblings are genuinely awful people, and the anime is fully aware of that fact, as they are often punished for their behavior. Filled with references, parodies, and absurdity, Mr. Osomatsu is delightfully unhinged.
Season 1 is great, but the anime gets progressively worse after that. Seasons 2 and 3, along with Mr. Osomatsu the Movie, are solid enough, but season 4 is, to be honest, quite bad.
36 Romantic Killer
A Hilarious Twist On The Reverse Harem Formula

Romantic Killer
- Release Date
- 2022 - 2022
- Studio
- DOMERICA
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Wataru Momose
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Streaming Service(s)
- Netflix
Starting as a reverse harem parody that slowly morphs into a pretty good romance in its own right, Romantic Killer is hilarious during its first six or so episodes, when its focus is nearly solely on comedy. While not disappearing completely after that point, humor takes somewhat of a backseat during the second half of the story, although the anime remains good throughout its entire run.
Anzu has no interest in boys, so a strange mascot shows up to transform her life into a shojo romcom harem. Naturally, Anzu is not thrilled by this development, and she generally tries to resist the three romantic partners who seem to develop an interest in her. While the other characters are likable, Anzu carries Romantic Killer's humor almost entirely by herself, with her over-the-top facial reactions being the main source of humor.
35 One-Punch Man
Saitama Is Maybe The Funniest Protagonist In Any Shonen Anime

One Punch Man
- Streaming Service(s)
The perfect blend of awesome superhero action and gut-busting comedy series, One-Punch Man is one of the coolest anime shows ever. Saitama is the titular hero of the show, an unlikely hero with the ability to destroy any opponent with a single punch.
One-Punch Man: 6 Weaknesses Saitama Has
Despite being known as the invincible hero, Saitama has several glaring weaknesses – all vulnerable to exploitation by his enemies.
The comedic moments round out the show's intense fighting sequences nicely, especially when supervillains and superheroes gawk at the improbable power of the unsuspecting Saitama. A clever parody of superhero culture and over-the-top action anime, One-Punch Man continues to be ranked among the best anime series of all time, even if its sequel season is nowhere near as good as the first. Saitama is one of the funniest anime characters ever, but his presence declines somewhat as the story progresses.
Mob Psycho 100 can also be pretty hilarious.
34 From Today, It's My Turn!!
A Forgotten Comedy Classic That Needs To Be Made Readily Available

Kyou kara Ore wa!!
- Release Date
- April 1, 1993
- Studio
- Pierrot
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Hiroyuki Nishimori
- Number of Episodes
- 10
Does anybody remember this anime? I cannot be the only one who loves this show. An obscure OVA series from the '90s, From Today, It's My Turn!! is a pain to find in this day and age, but the anime is good enough to warrant the effort. Takashi and Shinji are two high schoolers who want to get a fresh start, so they decide to revamp their looks and embrace the delinquent lifestyle. Unsurprisingly, they initially butt heads over their similar goals, especially since Shinji's straight-laced and stoic demeanor clashes with Takashi's Looney Tunes-style energy. However, after they realize they cannot seem to escape each other, they reluctantly become allies.
From Today, It's My Turn!! is an absolute blast. Even if laughs are not always its primary drive, each (long) episode is stuffed with humor, and most of the jokes land. The final episode is particularly hilarious since it introduces the two wannabe tough guys to the Yakuza, a clash of legitimacy that most delinquent anime try to avoid.
33 Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
The Perfect Comedy Anime

Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto
- Release Date
- 2016 - 2016-00-00
- Network
- TBS
- Japanese Title
- Sakamoto desu ga?
- Studio
- Studio Deen
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Nami Sano
- Number of Episodes
- 12
The “perfect” character trope can be tedious at times, as it can start to become annoying after a certain point. However, that’s not the case with Sakamoto: he literally is perfect. The show follows the titular character, the coolest kid in school, who is liked by everyone, and for good reason: everything he does, no matter how mundane, is awesome. The characters are a lot of fun, as are the subplots.
While short, this funny anime is very rewatchable and silly in the best possible way, all the while including just enough heart to balance out this laughter. Now, admittedly, the punchline is pretty much the same in every sketch, but it is a good joke.
32 YuruYuri
A Cute Girls Doing Cute Things Anime That Gets Progressively More Unhinged

YuruYuri
- Release Date
- July 5, 2011
- Japanese Title
- Yuru Yuri
- Studio
- Doga Kobo, TYO Animations
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Namori
- Number of Episodes
- 42
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
As its name suggests, YuruYuri is almost exclusively about yuri love, although that does not mean romance is in the air. Doga Kobo's anime revolves around a Middle School Amusement Club, which is just an excuse for a few friends to spend some time together. Akari, Kyoko, Yui, and Chinatsu serve as the show's heart, but they are accompanied and occasionally eclipsed by a slew of fantastic secondary characters.
YuruYuri plays out like a conventional slice of life comedy, albeit one filled with characters who all seem to have crushes on their schoolmates. On the surface, this might sound repetitive, but the show does a great job of differentiating the girls' relationships, infatuations, and personalities. YuruYuri leans into the, well, girls love subtext way more than most of these types of shows, and it has fun with the concept.
31 Silver Spoon
A Down-To-Earth And Funny Look At Agriculture

-0-13-screenshot.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=252&h=183&dpr=2)

Silver Spoon
- Release Date

- Japanese Title
- Gin no Saji

- A-1 Pictures
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Hiromu Arakawa
- Number of Episodes
- 22
Following years of pressure to live up to his family's expectations, the exhausted Yugo Hachiken decides to enroll at an agricultural school. As a city kid with no experience working on a farm nor much interest in the field, he is entirely ill-prepared for the challenge and quickly finds himself struggling to complete even the most basic of tasks. Fortunately, he is surrounded by generally helpful teachers and classmates.
10 Best Anime About Farming
Among calm and cozy shows, farming anime are some of the best options to relax and think of simpler times.
Silver Spoon's premise might be unusual, but the anime takes a fairly grounded approach to its characters and situations. Rather than an idiot who cannot do anything right, Hachiken is simply out of his depth, and the laughs come from watching him earnestly try to adapt to his new circumstances. The rest of the characters are awesome too. While often hilarious, Silver Spoon gets very real at times, and the show handles these dramatic moments well.
30 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
An Anime Comedy Inspired By Western Animated Series

Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt
- Release Date
- 2010 - 2025-00-00
- Directors
- Hiroyuki Imaishi
- Writers
- TAGRO, Hiroyuki Imaishi, Jamie Marchi
- Studio
- Gainax
- Creator
- Gainax
- Number of Episodes
- 13
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
While you might not necessarily love it, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is at least a one-of-a-kind experience, at least for anime. Clearly inspired by 2000s Western cartoons, Gainax's 2010 series and Trigger's 2025 sequel are loud, profane, and relentlessly in poor taste. To be clear, all of those are positive things, and the show never hides what it is trying to be. So, if you do not enjoy the first two episodes, you might as well move on as the anime will never change its colors.
Panty and Stocking are angels who were thrown out of Heaven due to their behavior, and they are sent to Earth to repent. Instead, they end up embracing humanity's vices, showing absolutely no desire to reflect. They are also monitored by a priest who has his own vices, and they have to frequently fight demons. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is a fever dream in anime form, one fueled by adolescent humor and gorgeous animation.
29 Hinamatsuri
An Out Of This World Anime Comedy

Hinamatsuri tells the timeless tale of a Yakuza member who suddenly finds himself as the guardian of a powerful esper from another dimension. Whether he likes it or not, Nitta's life is turned upside down thanks to the arrival of Hina, a girl who ran away from her realm, where she was used as a weapon. While the two do not always get along, Nitt and Hina eventually develop an adorable and wholesome father-daughter dynamic.
Packed to the brim with great characters, Hinamatsuri takes viewers on an incredible roller-coaster ride, and the ride is 100% worth it. The show can go from a painfully hilarious skit fueled by Hina's stoic demeanor or Hitomi's odd maturity to a surprisingly emotional storyline that deals with homelessness.
28 Ghost Stories (English Dub)
The Parody Dub That Set The Stage For So Many Future Fan Productions

Ghost Stories
- Release Date
- 2000 - 2001
- Network
- Fuji TV
- Directors
- Johei Matsuura
- Japanese Title
- Gakkou no Kaidan
- Based On
- Novel
- Studio
- Pierrot
- Number of Episodes

Ghost Stories is an anomaly in the world of anime series. The original Japanese show follows a group of kids trying to protect their town from a group of malicious ghosts. The English dub, however, changes things substantially. The team in charge of the dub had very few rules and used that to their advantage, completely changing the dialogue and story to their liking and making it a knee-slapping comedy instead of a serious ghost-hunting show.
The dubbed dialogue is downright hilarious, featuring dark humor, pop culture references, and brilliant inside jokes. By no means a typical comedy anime series, Ghost Stories is a wicked fun ride for anyone looking for a "different" kind of animated humor. Considering how popular parody dubs became in the 2010s, Ghost Stories is arguably one of the most influential comedy anime of all time.
27 Urusei Yatsura (2022) Or Original
An Anime Comedy Staple

Urusei Yatsura
- Release Date
- 2022 - 2024-00-00
- Studio
- David Production
- Number of Episodes
- 46
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Rumiko Takahashi

I love a classic. Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura is an all-time classic manga that received a great anime in the early '80s. While that series is difficult to track down and watch in this day and age, the 2022 adaptation is readily available on HIDIVE, and it is just as good as its ancestor. Aliens invade Earth, and the planet's safety comes down to a contest between Lum, the daughter of the invaders' leader, and Ataru, a guy who has a one-track mind. Long story short, Earth is spared as Lum falls in love with Ataru, leading to them becoming engaged despite the human's objections.
Urusei Yatsura: 8 Things You May Not Know About The Anime Classic
Urusei Yatsura began Rumiko Takahashi's legacy, and there are some quirky facts about it that fans might know about.
Even though character growth is not completely absent, Urusei Yatsura is a sitcom that mostly sticks to the status quo. Most episodes revolve around Ataru's promiscuous nature and Lum's tendency to electrocute her darling, although they are supported by a great roster of secondary characters. With great animation, timeless slapstick, and generally likable characters (except for maybe Ataru), Urusei Yatsura lives up to its source material's legacy.
26 Barakamon
The Best Slice Of Life Anime Is Also A Great Comedy

Barakamon
- Release Date
- 2014 - 2014
- Directors
- Masaki Tachibana
- Writers
- Pierre Sugiura
- Studio
- Kinema Citrus
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Satsuki Yoshino
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
Barakamon is straight-up one of the best slice-of-life anime of all time, and it is a must-watch for anybody craving an iyashikei series with lovable characters and great animation. It is also pretty funny, even if it does not constantly prioritize laughter. Although talented as a calligrapher, Sei does not handle criticism well, to the point of punching a critic who says his work lacks passion. In response, Sei is sent by his father to an island, all under the guise of providing him with peace to focus on his work. In truth, the trip's goal is to help Sei connect with people and loosen up, a journey fueled by the locals who will not leave the protagonist alone.
While its brilliance goes beyond humor, Barakamon rarely misses a beat when trying to inspire a smile or two. All the comedy stems from Sei's dynamic with the residents, particularly a young kid named Naru. Although initially annoyed by the constant interruptions, Sei gradually begins to appreciate the island's slower pace and calm atmosphere.
25 Prison School
An Anime Comedy That Takes No Prisoners

Prison School
- Release Date
- 2015 - 2015
- Studio
- J.C.Staff
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Akira Hiramoto
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
An acquired taste that many others and I appreciate, Prison School can be downright hilarious, as long as a viewer does not mind humor directed toward an adult (or male adolescent) audience. Admittedly, ecchi is not exactly known for setting an extremely high bar of quality, but Prison School does an admirable job blending that genre with comedy, creating an irreverent whole that satisfies both a desire for laughs and fanservice.
The story is quite simple. Male students are caught spying on girls, so they are thrown into, well, prison school as a punishment. What ensues is a lot of risque jokes and hilarious facial expressions. Although initially presented as antagonists, the female student council members gradually step out of that role, even leading to romance in some instances.
24 The Eminence In Shadow
An Isekai Comedy That Goes Full Chuunibyou

The Eminence in Shadow
- Release Date
- 2022 - 2023
- Japanese Title
- Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!
- Studio
- Nexus
- Based On
- Light Novel
- Creator
- Daisuke Aizawa
- Number of Episodes
- 32
- Streaming Service(s)
- HIDIVE, Hulu
The Eminence in Shadow stars Cid, the ultimate edge lord who gets to live out his chuunibyou fantasy when he reincarnates in a world with magic. As this is an isekai, Cid is fairly overpowered, and his faux-deep ramblings about being the shadow that governs society are taken at face value by pretty much everyone he meets. In the meantime, the protagonist tries to play the part of a background character, a role that allows him to show off his acting skills.
The Eminence In Shadow: Every Race, Explained
Eminence in Shadow features diverse races, each with its own unique characteristics.
A self-aware parody of isekai and overpowered protagonists, The Eminence in Shadow takes its world fairly seriously, which only serves to emphasize Cid's juvenile antics and nonsensical claims. Even though the secondary characters are not hilarious, they work brilliantly as foils to the protagonist while also getting a few moments to shine. Now, I have to admit that somebody's mileage with this series will likely come down to their love (or hate) of isekai anime, as quite a few of the bigger laughs require some familiarity with the genre.
23 Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
A Cute Anime Romcom That Is A Lot More Comedy Than Romance

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
- Release Date
- 2014 - 2014
- Japanese Title
- Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
- Studio
- Doga Kobo
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Izumi Tsubaki
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Streaming Service(s)
- Hoopla
Chiyo Sakura is head-over-heels for her schoolmate, the likable but dense Nozaki. One day, she finally gets the courage to ask out her crush; unfortunately, Nozaki misconstrues Sakura's affection as admiration for his shojo manga. Before she knows it, the girl has earned a job as a mangaka's assistant, which naturally leads to many more misunderstandings.
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is a charming romantic comedy that leans heavily into the latter side of things. Nozaki and Sakura are not only endearing characters in isolation, but they also bounce off each other beautifully. The leads do not have the carry the show on their backs either, as Doga Kobo's anime has a plethora of great secondary characters.
22 Daily Lives Of High School Boys
An Anime Skit Comedy Series That Never Misses

Daily Lives of High School Boys
- Release Date
- 2012 - 2012
- Japanese Title
- Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou
- Studio
- Sunrise
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Yasunobu Yamauchi
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
If someone's imagination is free enough, even the mundane can be hilarious. Daily Lives of High School Boys is a gag comedy about a trio of perfectly ordinary boys doing perfectly ordinary things that just happen to often devolve into cringeworthy territory.
Divided into skits, Sunrise's anime is expertly paced to ensure nearly none of the jokes overstay their welcome. More importantly, the series knows when to revisit a storyline or situation to produce a couple more laughs.
21 Spy X Family
Anya Might Be The Funniest Anime Child Character Of All Time

Spy x Family
- Release Date
- 2022 - 2025-00-00
- Studio
- Wit Studio, CloverWorks
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Tatsuya Endo
- Number of Episodes
- 37
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Hulu
Spy x Family was among 2022's shining beacons, airing two fun cours during Spring and Fall. The anime has already confirmed that a sequel is on the horizon, so the Forgers' time in the sun is far from done. Set in a world defined by a fragile peace between two powerful states, Twilight is a superspy tasked with infiltrating an academy to get close to a politician. To accomplish this task, he becomes Loid Forger and adopts Anya, a charming girl who can secretly read minds. Loid also marries Yor, a quiet woman who moonlights as an assassin.
Spy x Family has exceptional characters who all inject a unique brand of comedy into the story. Anya tends to steal the spotlight due to her weird mix of innocence and insightfulness; while she can read the minds of adults, she does not always understand what she hears. Loid works well as Anya's straight man, while Yor is a surprisingly great source for slapstick humor.
While not reaching the same heights as its predecessors, season 2 is also consistently charming and funny.
20 FLCL
An Unapologetically Weird And Over-The-Top Anime Comedy That Is An Undisputed Classic

One of the most absurd comedy anime ever made, FLCL is a hilariously offbeat anime that fans can watch over and over again. The original series is a mere six episodes, but the animators and writers pack a lot into these fast-paced vignettes. Equal parts anime parody and surreal madness, FLCL is sort of a loose cannon, barely following a coherent plot, yet still acting as a cohesive comedy sitcom that ranks among the best anime series ever.
The story involves a young boy and his misadventures in his small town after a chaotic alien girl arrives and robots begin popping out of his head. The jokes are so quick that viewers may need to watch them a second time just to catch every kernel of comedy gold. The visuals are amazing too.
Unfortunately, the sequels are not very good and really struggle to capture FLCL's magic, to the point that I would almost recommend just stopping after the original 6 episodes.
19 Ouran High School Host Club
A Shojo Anime Reverse Harem That Also Happens To Be Painfully Hilarious

Ouran High School Host Club
- Release Date
- April 5, 2006
- Japanese Title
- Ouran Koukou Host Club
- Studio
- Bones
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Bisco Hatori
- Number of Episodes
- 26
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Tubi
A parody of other popular anime, Ouran High School Host Club is a silly high school comedy series at heart. The central character, Haruhi Fujioka, ends up in debt to a posh club of boys who “host” female clients.
The 7 Most Iconic Anime Cafes
These iconic anime cafes range from lush, cozy maid cafes and establishments run by polar bears to safe spaces meant for human/android fraternization.
While that sounds suspicious, the show is actually laid back and funny in more than one way. Plot twists are this show’s bread and butter, and it does them better than most other anime series.
18 Space Dandy
A Wacky But Epic Sci-Fi Anime Comedy That Resets After Nearly Every Episode

Space Dandy
- Release Date
- 2014 - 2014
- Directors
- Shinichirô Watanabe, Shingo Natsume
- Writers
- Shinichirô Watanabe, Dai Sato, Kimiko Ueno, Ichirō Ōkōchi, Keiko Nobumoto, Toh EnJoe, Masaaki Yuasa, Hayashi Mori, Kiyotaka Oshiyama
- Studio
- Bones
- Number of Episodes
- 26
- Creator(s)
- Shinichirô Watanabe
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
Space Dandy does a lot of things well, humor perhaps being the best one. Shinichirō Watanabe might be more known for anime series that balances comedy with other genres, but Space Dandy is much more comfortable making low-brow jokes and going for the silliest route possible.
There is still plenty of high-flying space action to soak in, but the comedic moments are the real showcase. Comedy fans should get their fill of all the absurd jokes the series throws their way.
17 Azumanga Daioh: The Animation
A Timeless Anime With Realistic But Still Funny Characters

Azumanga Daioh
- Release Date
- April 9, 2002
- Japanese Title
- Azumanga Daiou
- Studio
- J.C.Staff
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Kiyohiko Azuma
- Number of Episodes
- 26
- Streaming Service(s)
- HIDIVE
Azumanga Daioh's influence and importance cannot be understated. Both the manga and its anime adaptation helped set the standard for "cute girls doing cute things" type stories, paving the way for releases like Lucky Star and School Rumble.
The most amazing thing about this anime is that the humor flows naturally from characters who are fully grounded in reality. The comedy very rarely takes on surreal or outlandish elements, instead opting to focus on the cast's charming and hilarious banter. Despite being more than two decades old, Azumanga Daioh is still as awesome as ever.
Fans of this series should check out the Yotsuba&! manga.
16 Dandadan
A Shonen Anime That Tries Every Genre And Excels At All Of Them, Including Comedy

Dandadan
- Release Date
- 2024 - 2025-00-00
- Studio
- Science Saru
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Yukinobu Tatsu
- Number of Episodes
- 24
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu
Dandadan is just the complete package, in my opinion. The shonen manga is regarded as one of the best new series of the 2020s, and the adaptation has more than lived up to the source material's reputation. Science Saru has brought its absolute A-game, crafting a visually impressive anime that does justice to the manga's tone, charm, emotions, and (most importantly) humor. Along with being one of Fall 2024's best romance and action series, Dandadan was also arguably its most hilarious.
Battle shonen incorporating humor is standard practice, with One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Naruto all having hilarious moments. However, Dandadan is first and foremost a comedy, albeit one that throws out top-notch action every other episode. Even when a fight takes center stage, the anime still manages to incorporate creative slapstick and witty banter, usually between the two protagonists (Momo and Ken). Whenever things slow down, Dandadan becomes its best self, allowing the very strong and likable characters to shine and (gradually) develop their dynamics.

Hanako, Olivia, and Kasumi, three wholesome middle school girls, form a Pastimers Club as a way to hang out, study, and enjoy each other's company. They play schoolyard games, babysit, talk about love, and occasionally stage an intense witch trial that threatens to reduce their numbers by one. Asobi Asobase is one of those very rare "cute girls doing awful things" shows, and it is a devilish delight.
Jumping back and forth between warm visuals and grotesque facial expressions, Lerche's anime is unpredictable, unapologetically silly, and periodically mean-spirited. Aosbi Asobase might not be for everyone, but there is no other comedy anime quite like it.
14 KonoSuba
The Best Isekai Anime Comedy...And By Quite A Margin

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Isekai is rampant, and the genre's popularity has spawned a fair few comedies or outright parodies. While there are many hilarious isekai anime, KonoSuba is undoubtedly the most famous and, arguably, the funniest. Kazuma dies in an act of attempted heroism, only to find himself standing in front of Aqua, a goddess who offers to send him to another world with one gift. Annoyed by her mockery, Kazuma picks Aqua, an act of revenge that proves to be also self-sabotage.
KonoSuba: 10 Hilarious Megumin Memes
Megumin's wild nature can strike in any number of ways; what matters is that it does, and lends itself incredibly well to memes.
Forming the definition of a dysfunctional party, Kazuma and Aqua partner up with a magician who loves to blow things up and a tank who really loves her role. Together, they fight, lose, cry, and occasionally save the day. Kazuma is the ultimate anti-protagonist in the isekai genre, and he is surrounded by characters who all flip tropes on their heads. KonoSuba shines in its slapstick and character-driven humor, and the anime even has a couple of decent fight sequences.
13 Ranma 1/2
An All-Time Great Anime Comedy That Has Two Hilarious Versions

Ranma 1/2

- Studio
- Studio Deen
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Rumiko Takahashi
- Number of Episodes
- 161
- Streaming Service(s)
- Hulu, Hoopla, Peacock
A bona fide classic, Ranma 1/2 was a delight in 1989 and the same mostly holds true more than three decades later. Even though a few aspects have not aged gracefully (Happosai being the worst offender), the show's positives far outweigh its negatives, making it an easy recommendation for comedy anime fans who want something from yesteryear to sink their teeth into. The definitive gender-bender anime, Ranma 1/2 revolves around a martial artist who transforms into a woman when drenched in water. Obviously, this is a significant challenge in and of itself, but Ranma is also on the road to marriage at the behest of his father, and he has three possible candidates.
Blending humor, action, and romance, Ranma 1/2 carries out a masterful balancing act that consistently allows its impeccable roster of characters to shine. Ranma is a great lead, and the girls all have well-established personalities that allow them to bring something unique to the table. Even though dated, the animation is also pretty good for its era.
The remake is just as good, if not better. We went with the original since it has way more episodes, but the 2024 version might replace it eventually.
12 Cromartie High School
Just A Normal Anime School Comedy...With A Gorilla, A Robot, and A Freddie Mercury...Yes, That Freddie Mercury

Cromartie High School
- Release Date

- Studio
- Production I.G
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Eiji Nonaka
- Number of Episodes
- 26
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Tubi, Amazon Prime Video
Cromartie High School is not for the faint of heart. The school has earned a reputation for delinquency, where every class has the potential to erupt into a full-blown war. When he transfers to the school, the mild-mannered Takashi seems out of place, although he quickly proves to be more than capable of holding his own in a student body consisting of gang members, Freddie Mercury, a gorilla, and a robot.
A sketch comedy, Cromartie High School is an absurdist school comedy that pokes fun at every old-school shonen trope. The show starts silly and gradually ramps up the mayhem, all the while fleshing out a fairly expansive roster of initially stereotypical characters. While repetition sets in after a while, at its best, this cult classic is as funny as any other anime out there.

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You is an outlandish parody of harem tropes while simultaneously also being one of the most wholesome additions to that genre in a long time. Battle-worn after years of rejections, Rentarou prays that his fortune will change in high school, and his pleas are directly answered by a god. Due to an error in the system, Rentarou has 100 soulmates waiting for him, and he needs to add them all to his harem to ensure they have positive futures. So begins the ultimate harem where every girl is the best girl, love conquers all, and meta jokes await.
100 Girlfriends starts silly and quickly ramps up the mayhem with each new girl introduced, all of whom lean into specific archetypes without being consumed by them. Focusing heavily on slapstick and the occasional dose of cringe, this anime is a laugh riot with plenty of room to grow. As enjoyable as the first season is, 100 Girlfriends surpassed itself with Winter 2025's season 2, which completely embraces absurdity to become an over-the-top comedy that can give greats like Gintama a run for its money. As more and more girls are added to the harem, more logic flies out of the window, and that is for the best.

At times, the anime can be surprisingly surreal, opting to represent Hitori's anxiety through imaginative and hilarious sequences that blur reality with fiction. The anime does not mock or ridicule Hitori's struggles but rather uses humor to present them endearingly.

A parody of the music business and heavy metal culture, Detroit Metal City is the story of a young musician with dreams of becoming a pop musician. However, fate has other things in store for him, and he instead finds himself fronting a popular blackened death metal band.
The juxtaposition between cutesy pop and harsh, brutal metal is comedy gold, and the music is a lot of fun too. While not particularly likable, Souichi works really well as a lead, and his two personalities bounce off each other perfectly. Any fans of anime and music will love this.
7 Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
A Fantastic Comedy Spin-Off That Anybody Can Watch And Enjoy

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
- Release Date
- August 26, 2003
- Studio
- Kyoto Animation
- Based On
- Light novel
- Creator
- Shoji Gatoh
- Number of Episodes
- 12
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Tubi
A Full Metal Panic spin-off, Fumoffu focuses on Sousuke Sagara's attempts to protect Kaname Chidori by posing as a student at her high school. Due to his military background, Sousuke does not quite know how to keep a low profile, and his stoic personality and violent tendencies tend to cause more problems than they actually solve.
Unlike the mecha-driven mainline entry, Fumoffu is a pure gag comedy with no overarching plot or any real stakes. Consequently, a viewer does not have to be a fan of Full Metal Panic to enjoy this comedic side story. Sousuke's no-nonsense attitude is perfect for comedy, and he has such a big personality that nearly every other character serves as his straight man. To her credit, Kaname is also a punchline tour de force, and even Teletha gets a fun two-episode arc.
6 Shin Chan
Maybe The Most Iconic Anime Comedy Ever

Crayon Shin-Chan
- Release Date
- April 13, 1992
- Studio
- Shin-Ei Animation
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Yoshito Usui
One of the most popular and longest-running comedy anime ever, Crayon Shin-chan has over 1,000 episodes under its belt and has been dubbed in dozens of countries outside of Japan. This funny series explores the world of kindergartner Shin-chan, a rambunctious boy with a habit of causing chaos and asking adults inappropriate questions.
Shin-chan's humor is juvenile, but that's also the biggest appeal. The adventurous wonder of childhood blends well with the silly offbeat jokes. This top comedy anime is perfect for anyone looking for an easy laugh without lots of exposition.
5 Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
The Best Romcom Anime Ever

Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
- Release Date
- 2019 - 2023-00-00
- Japanese Title
- Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
- Studio
- A-1 Pictures
- Creator
- Aka Akasaka
- Number of Episodes
- 37
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Hulu
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is simultaneously a parody of romance anime and also one of the genre's greatest representatives. Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya are Shuchiin Academy's student council president and vice president, respectively, and they both have crushes on each other. However, they refuse to reveal their feelings, preferring to engage in mind games to try to trick the other person into exposing themselves first.
Kaguya-sama starts as a full-blown comedy, with each episode being divided into skits revolving around a specific battle of wits. Miyuki and Kaguya tend to take center stage, but secondary characters like Chika and Yuu are also highlighted. In fact, an argument could be made that the latter are the funniest characters in the anime. As the series progresses, Kaguya-sama begins to incorporate more romantic elements, although the show never fully drops its comedic edge.
4 The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.
The Best School Comedy Anime Ever

Kusuo Saiki is a ridiculously powerful psychic who can do basically anything, except not attract the attention of his school's quirkiest students. Kusuo wants to come across as an average person, something that proves difficult when surrounded by the perfect Kokomi Teruhashi, the lovably boneheaded Riki Nendou, and the delusional Shun Kaidou.
10 Iconic Anime Children Who Are Absurdly Powerful
The anime franchise hosts incredibly powerful individuals and these anime children are no exception to this group of overpowered characters.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. makes full use of what is, ultimately, a straightforward premise. Initially, the humor revolves around Kusuo trying to maintain his secret by avoiding the lovable weirdos who seem to gravitate towards him; however, as the series progresses, the skits shift focus and become about the protagonist's reluctant friendships with all of them. Each character is a laugh riot who gets plenty of moments to shine, and Kusuo acts as the perfect straight man to their antics.
3 Nichijou: My Ordinary Life
The Best Skit Comedy Anime Ever

Nichijou - My Ordinary Life
- Release Date
- 2011 - 2011
- Directors
- Tatsuya Ishihara
- Writers
- Jukki Hanada
- Studio
- Kyoto Animation
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Keiichi Arawi
- Number of Episodes
- 26
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll
Nichijou is a treasure of a comedy anime, one that offers a unique blend of surreal jokes and heartfelt characters. The series follows the lives of a group of high school girls in a weird city populated by wackos. There isn’t much of a central plot beyond "normal" life, but the show perfectly paces its progression as it transforms from a quirky slice of life to an absurd fever dream. For instance, one of the recurring girls is an android, and she is one of the more ordinary characters in the show. Honestly, the same can be said for the talking cat. The weirder things get, the funnier this odd and unforgettable anime becomes.
While it has a fairly slow start, Nichijou is among the most creative comedy anime of all time, and it simply goes from strength to strength throughout the season. The skit-based structure always results in a few misses, but this series hits the mark way more than nearly any of its peers. When a segment lands, it will have you in stitches.
Honorable mention to City The Animation, which is by the same author and strikes a similar vibe to Nichijou.
2 Grand Blue Dreaming
The Best College Anime Ever

Grand Blue Dreaming
- Release Date
- 2018 - 2025-00-00
- Network
- TBS, MBS
- Directors
- Atsuko Tonomizu, Yoshihisa Matsumoto, Tarou Iwasaki, Nanako Shimazaki, Ryuta Kawahara, Takashi Kobayashi
- Japanese Title
- Grand Blue
- Studio
- Zero-G
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Kenji Inoue
- Number of Episodes
- 12
Well, it is hardly surprising that the funniest manga ever is responsible for one of the funniest anime ever, even if the former is far better than the latter. A rare anime set in college, Grand Blue Dreaming is technically about diving, in the sense that it is primarily set in a store devoted to that activity; however, in reality, Grand Blue Dreaming is about drinking, partying, and making stupid mistakes in pursuit of that lifestyle.
As he is about to start university in a new city, Iori moves in with his uncle, who runs a diving shop. Although he cannot really swim, Iori has to join the diving club, and he gradually comes to appreciate the ocean's beauty. He also gets drunk and loses his clothes almost every night, a situation that he initially hates but comes to love. He is surrounded by lovable but ridiculous people, who might just be responsible for the best facial expressions since GTO.
1 Gintama
The Best Comedy Anime Ever

Gintama
- Release Date
- 2006 - 2021-00-00
- Studio
- Sunrise, Bandai Namco Pictures
- Based On
- Manga
- Creator
- Hideaki Sorachi
- Streaming Service(s)
- Crunchyroll, Hulu
- Number of Episodes
- 367
A strange combination of comedy, samurai action, and science fiction, Gintama is a great lighthearted anime that mixes fourth-wall-breaking humor and drama. After aliens invaded the world during Japan's Edo period, the planet fell under extraterrestrial rule. Not everyone is a fan of their new alien overlords, including Gintoki Sakata, a master samurai who takes up a job as a freelancer after the war against the aliens fails. The comedic anime series follows Gintoki's misadventures with his friends as he tries to make ends meet under a new world order.
While roughly half the episodes are straight-up battle shonen goodness, Gintama still has well over 100 episodes that simply want to make viewers laugh, and they rarely fail to hit the mark. Featuring an absolutely massive roster of characters who are nearly all capable of hilarity, the anime regularly pushes the envelope in its humor and storytelling. No other comedy anime offers quantity and quality quite like Gintama.
Comedy’s Biggest Wild Cards (You Either Love Or Hate These Anime)

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of comedy anime. Seriously, the above list only scratches the surface, even if it primarily covers all the genre's heavyweights. The thing is, comedy is not only subjective but also can benefit from a willingness to alienate part of its audience. A person's favorite anime comedy could be a cringefest to somebody else, and both reactions are completely valid.
Therefore, this section will cover comedy anime that tend to get passionate reactions from viewers, even if it isn't always positive. If you have already seen all of the above shows, I recommend trying out a few of these series.
|
Anime |
Premise |
Why Is It Polarizing? |
|---|---|---|
|
WataMote: No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular! |
An unpopular girl tries to start fresh in high school by using her dating sim experience. |
WataMote is purposefully cringe-inducing, to the point that it can be difficult to sit through for some folks. However, the show knows what it is doing and allows the protagonist to learn and grow. |
|
Pop Team |
An absurdist comedy that pulls absolutely no punches |
With an unusual art style and wildly inconsistent sketches, Pop Team parodies everything under the sun, which isn't going to hit the mark with everyone. |
|
Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts |
A comedy set in a school where students summon monsters. However, it isn't really about the summoning. |
Baka & Test is a masterclass of stupid comedy, and I mean that as a compliment. That said, you really need to have a tolerance for idiots. |
|
Dropkick On My Devil! |
A goth girl summons a demon, and they start an odd couple dynamic that involves a lot of torture and pain. |
Dropkick On My Devil! is a tamer version of something like Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan, and most of the sketches end with the same punchline. Still, the characters are mostly fun, and the slapstick humor can be great. |
|
Gakuen Handsome |
A boys' love parody that highlights all the genre's worst traits. |
I think Gakuen Handsome is straight-up hilarious, but its weird art style can put off a lot of people. You also need to be familiar with BL tropes to really enjoy it. |
|
Mitsudomoe |
Three mischievous girls aggravate their teacher, each other, and everyone around them. |
Mitsudomoe pushes the limits of common decency, all the while delivering the occasional gut-busting scene. |
|
Lucky Star |
Follows the life of four girls. |
More slice of life than full-blown comedy, and its slow-pace can be grating; however, Lucky Star is wildly influential. |
Best New Comedy Anime of April 2026

Spring 2026 is shaping up to be a pretty great season, but that might not be obvious when it comes specifically to comedy anime. A few lighthearted moments aside, pretty much none of the biggest anime emphasize humor, and the season doesn't really have any big "watch this" comedies. The thing is, Spring 2026 is arguably one of the funniest seasons in a long time; you have to look beyond the likes of Witch Hat Atelier, Classroom of the Elite, Re:Zero, and TenSura. Daemons of the Shadow Realm has some funny moments, so that one gets a pass.
- Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! – The funniest anime of Spring 2026. Seriously, it is barely a competition, and that statement is entirely due to this anime's brilliance rather than a lack of quality elsewhere. Nakamura is gay and has a crush on his schoolmate, Hirose, and he sets out to strike a friendship between them. A boys' love anime that takes a very different approach to the genre, Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! is a sketch comedy about unrequited love and the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. Nakamura's antics are consistently hilarious, particularly his tendency to big his schemes up before immediately messing up the execution.
- Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy – You really need to appreciate misunderstandings and easily flustered girls to enjoy this one; if you do, then prepare to laugh yourself to hell. Kanan is a demon on an excursion to Earth, where she joins a high school in search of victims to consume. She rests her eyes on Youji and declares her interest in having him for dinner. However, the boy completely misreads her intentions for a confession, and he reacts with complete enthusiasm at the thought of becoming her meal. Naturally, Kanan becomes a blushing mess whenever actual romance comes into play, creating a situation where two weirdly innocent characters get into an odd relationship.
- The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt – Spring 2026 is the season for romcoms that nail both parts of the equation, and The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt is probably the funniest of these shows. Telling a relatively traditional "opposites attract" narrative, the anime brings together the inflexible Tougo with the slight rule-breaker Poemu, a dynamic that works pretty darn well as neither character goes too far in one direction. Yeah, Tougo is strict, but he is also direct and willing to accept when he is wrong. On the other hand, Poemu is barely a rule-breaker, although she can occasionally lean into violence when embarrassed or angry. Tougo handles most of the humor, and he is absolutely hilarious. Meanwhile, Poemu works perfectly as the straight (wo)man.
- Kill Blue – Here we have a high-concept comedy, which is always a nice change of pace. The world's deadliest assassin, Oogami, de-ages when he comes into contact with a bug. With a cure unavailable, he is given an assignment to infiltrate a middle school, a situation that he is not remotely prepared to handle. Kill Blue is all over the place tonally, as it jumps from wacky, fish-out-of-water comedy to some pretty dark moments; however, Oogami's old man reactions to his classmates are consistently funny.
- The Ramparts of Ice – I am hesitant to recommend this anime, as its depiction of bullying and its long-lasting psychological effects are realistic and pretty heavy. All the characters are surprisingly nuanced, and their flaws or struggles are taken seriously and not used as a punchline. That said, The Ramparts of Ice is filled with chibi-style humor, and it works perfectly to cut the tension and keep things from getting too depressing. This is the full package.
- My Ribdiculous Reincarnation – This is a hard one. My Ribdiculous Reincarnation is Spring 2026's most "comedy" comedy, meaning it exists solely to make viewers laugh. Romance, action, and adventure aren't the point, and everything exists to set up a joke. Unfortunately, the show is not great... or at least, it is not for everyone. Moving at a million miles a minute, each episode involves the protagonist recounting his most recent life to a goddess, who constantly reincarnates him. From a hero's rib to a crab, he always goes for the least desirable reincarnation to avoid going on a waiting list, and it always results in absurdity.
