dr-driveninsaneRebloggedsylkiecat25FollowSo I see a lot of people talking about whether or not their posts are screen reader friendly in the radqueer community, so I decided to test it.
Just note: I could only test **one** screen reader (Orca on Linux) in **one** browser (Firefox) because I don't have a spare computer/VM, and I don't know how to set up Chromium, and I don't know how to set up another screen reader, so I'm super sorry for that. Also, I only tested it in en-GB, but if anyone needs me to I could probably test it in en-US.
I could not test this on mobile either, so again, I'm super sorry. This is NOT a comprehensive test of EVERY screen reader on EVERY operating system, on EVERY browser, so just know that different operating systems, browsers, and screen readers will read out things slightly differently. Now, onto what I found:
1. Probably the most glaring issue is that it couldn't read out anything under the "read more" or "keep reading" cut. Again, this is going to vary from screen reader to screen reader, so HOPEFULLY other screen readers would be better at this. Besides, there's really no way around this. Edit: I'm kind of stupid, you can get it to read out selected text by assigning a hotkey to it, I just don't want to do that :D but yes if you just select the whole post you can get Orca to read it out
2. You don't need to put everything in plaintext! Sized, coloured, bold, italic, and other formatted text could be parsed completely fine.
3. It did have an issue with emojis and symbols. For example, if you have an emoji like 🌈 in your post, it would read out the name of the emoji, in this case "rainbow". If you have spaced out symbols, (for example "word , word" instead of "word, word") it would read out the individual symbols. If it was a symbol that didn't have a common name, such as ᗢ, it would read it out using its code, in this case 15E2. Edit: It also says "Japanese character" or "Chinese character" instead of the name of the character.
4. It was pretty good with words that weren't in the dictionary, such as "radqueer" and "transID", but it would sometimes mispronounce it in various ways (e.g. misinterpreting what sound it was supposed to use or cutting off prematurely).
5. As expected, with typing quirks like l33t sp34k, it would just read out each part of a word/letter and number individually. With typing quirks like replacing c with k or s with z, it worked completely fine and read the word as expected.
6. It wouldn't read out images with alt text automatically, I had to click on the button for the alt text for it to read out, and even then it would read out stuff it... probably wasn't supposed to read out? Like "Document header" at the start, before "Image description" then the actual description. But this is obviously an issue with the screen reader and not the alt text itself.
I don't know what else I should include. If there's anything else you want to know about please comment or send it in an ask and I'll edit the post after testing it.
I mostly tested intro posts, but if you want me to test any of your posts (intro posts or not) I can tell you how they do and how to make them more screen-reader friendly
