Bernard Tomic thrashed by Jarkko Nieminen in shortest-ever ATP match at Miami Masters

Bernard Tomic broke a record no tennis player wants, as he crashed out 6-0, 6-1 to Jarkko Nieminen in the shortest ever ATP match.

Tomic's straight-sets loss to the Finnish world number 40 at the Miami Masters lasted just 28 minutes and 20 seconds - the shortest in ATP history.

It was a miserable way to mark Tomic's comeback from injury, having not played since retiring in the first-round Australian Open clash against Rafael Nadal.

The previous record was set during Greg Rusedski's 29-minute 6-0, 6-0 win over Germany's Carsten Arriens at the Sydney International in 1996.

There was better news for Australia as Lleyton Hewitt - in his 600th ATP match - advanced to the second round with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Robin Haase.

Hewitt, 33, turned in another of the trademark fighbacks which have characterized a career that included grand slam crowns at Wimbledon in 2002 and the US Open in 2001.

The 44th-ranked Australian reversed course in the second set to reach the second round in just under two hours, with Haase saving a match point before exiting.

"It's not something you focus on, to tell you the truth. I totally forgot," Hewitt said of his 600th triumph. "Today was just like another match and an opportunity to go out there and play well.

"Obviously afterwards, it's a great milestone. Not many people get to achieve that. Not many people get the opportunity to get close to that, so it means I've been around for an awfully long time as well. I'm getting old.

"A few years ago when I had the last couple of surgeries I probably would have doubted I'd get to this stage anyway. I'm still grateful I'm out there and able to compete with the best guys."

Stosur progresses past Bertens

Samantha Stosur eased her way into the third round of the WTA event in Miami with a straight-sets victory over Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens.

The former US Open champion swept aside Bertens 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 12 minutes.

She will next meet either 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or American Coco Vandeweghe in the third round.

It was 16th seed Stosur's first match of the tournament after being had been awarded a bye into the second round.

But she faces a tough road ahead, with a projected fourth-round match-up against world number one Serena Williams.

The victory follows the 32-year-old's third-round exit from the Indian Wells Masters, where she was beaten by Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta - the eventual winner of the event.

Meanwhile, on the doubles courts, fellow Australians Casey Dellacqua and Ash Barty fell 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 to another Aussie, Anastasia Rodionova, and her Russian partner Alla Kudryavtseva.

Two Americans put out Argentines as Jack Sock defeated Guido Pella 6-3, 6-4 and Ryan Harrison stopped Federico Delbonis 6-2, 6-4.

France's Stephane Robert beat Russian Alex Bogomolov 7-5, 6-4 while compatriot Eduardo Roger-Vasselin defeated Dutchman Igor Sijsling 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3).

In women's play, Germany's Angelique Kerber beat China's Peng Shuai 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7/5) while 2011 Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, the number eight, beat Argentine Paola Ormaechea 6-3, 6-4.

Ana Ivanovic, the 12th seed, hammered American Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-1 while 14th-seeded Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki ousted Nadia Petrova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 .
