1. outline

archive.today has a history of attempts by the operator to cause DDOS attacks against specific addresses by visitors to the site, and the operator has even been discovered modifying archived content at will. Due to other problematic incidents, Wikipedia has determined that the information on archive.today is not sufficiently reliable, and its use as a source is prohibited. In fact, it is difficult to say that the website is functioning properly as an archive, so caution is required as attempts to use the contents of the website as the basis for any claim or dispute are highly likely to be meaningless.

It is a free service that allows you to permanently save specific pages for later viewing. The website is divided into a section where you enter the URL you want to save and a section where you search for saved archive snapshots. Of course, when you archive a restricted area, such as one that requires you to log in, the effect is the same as if the browser had archived it in its default state, such as logging out. In addition, moving frames or sounds cannot be implemented.

If you simply enter the URL you want to preserve without logging in or advertising, the URL will be preserved after a temporary crawling process so that you can view it even if the original is deleted later.

It can also be connected and used on mobile.[16]

In fact, unauthorized mirroring is completely illegal. If something bad happens, the person who entered the preservation order will be fully responsible, so it is best to use it with caution. In particular, the website is known to be collecting not only users' IP addresses but also other information without consent. They also make money by scraping paid subscription pages without permission and generating traffic. It is known that in November 2025, the FBI submitted a warrant to identify the unknown site operator. The server location is located in Europe and the operator is known to be Russian.

2. How to use

There are three main ways to use it.
  • Go to the archive homepage and enter the URL directly
  • or javascript:void(open('https://archive.is/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(document.location)))on a webpage you want to bookmark and keep
  • Alternatively, you can use Chrome's archive extension .

Either way, it creates a permanently viewable URL after a few minutes of loading.

A preserved version of namuwiki's FrontPage . You can see the frame form from the early days of namuwiki.[17]

3. Usage

URLs that have undergone the archiving process are provided with two viewing methods: text-saved and image-saved. In addition, the location of the original URL, the saved date, and the download URL are provided.

Because web pages can be permanently saved without logging in or requiring any prior knowledge, it can be widely used to preserve documents that are likely to be deleted or changed. For example, it can be used to preserve postings on web pages so that there is no room for misunderstanding in the future. In addition, you can use it to move images on sites where you cannot drag images. However, the point of overdoing it is that even things that should not be preserved are permanently preserved so that anyone can view them if they know the URL.

4. Delete method

If you are a victim or a legal representative of a victim who has been harmed in any way by an archive copied to the site, you have no choice but to report it to the police.

However, even if you report it to the police in Korea, there is a very high probability that you will receive a response that it is impossible to investigate and delete it because it is an overseas site, and that you can only block it. It is impossible for Korean police to cooperate without also investigating overseas sites. The only exceptions to investigation in cooperation with foreign countries are very large cyber crimes such as terrorism and child pornography .

If you leave your email address while reporting using the reporting function, an automatic response will be sent to your email address, and if you want to delete it, it will ask you to prepare legal documents and send them by airmail directly to France.

Currently, the only way for operators to communicate with others is through questions. There are only two answers , and all questions related to deletion on the question page, even through any other means, are completely ignored. In fact, the operator did not envisage fair use from the beginning, but only created it because he personally did not want to find data when he wanted to, so he was irresponsible from the beginning by pretending to ignore the damage caused by misuse. They are no different from users, but they say they will use the archive to avoid copyright infringement lawsuits, and if the operator is going to use it irresponsibly, they encourage them to use a better tool ( Wayback Machine ), so there is nothing to say.

So, if the web pages collected by the archive contain illegal content, or if there are people who are suffering damage because of the archive, there is no other way than to report it to the country where the server of the website is located or to find someone who can provide legal assistance.

The problem is that in this case, if you make a legal request directly to the national agency of the country in question, it usually takes several months for the matter to be processed. The problem is that this website is periodically moved to servers that are mainly incompatible with US law . Of course, even if you somehow manage to find one of the servers and ask the country for help, the server has already been moved somewhere else and is no longer under that country's jurisdiction.

In fact, in the case of some domains, you can use a proxy server to check that access is blocked in some countries to avoid legal interference.

However, if you are on the website and there are photos that can prove that you took them , you can initially hide the archive page from Google search results through DMCA . #

If you have financial resources, it is possible to hire a lawyer and undergo legal procedures, but even lawyers avoid archive.today, so it is simply a waste of time if you do not find the right lawyer. A democracy that prohibits censorship allows mandatory deletion of site data. In a country with a constitution , there is only a court .

If it is a revenge porn case, in addition to the police, a government agency under the Ministry of Gender Equality handles the deletion, so you can contact them. However, keep in mind that this also takes a long time due to the above-mentioned problem. In the case of child pornography, it appears that related pages are blocked.

As of July 2023, there are no more servers to escape to, so they have moved to companies that help cyber asylum using Russian IPs.

5. Criticism/Problems and Precautions

In fact, while providing a service that is legally and morally close to illegal, there is no proper feedback itself related to it.
  • Copyright Problem -A work is often stuffed without permission without the consent of the copyright holder. Even if a third party requested a stuff, it is a matter of copyright law to release the work of others. In addition to photos and webtoons, articles are written. Copyright occurs at the moment of writing. Even the paid Naver webtoons are stuffed. For reference, the website declares that it will not be kept in place, not to comply with DMCA .[18] In addition, the website collects the IP of a person requesting archiving, so be careful when trying to ask for archiving.
  • Interference with the business of the archiving site - Many Internet sites use advertising as their revenue model. This service may store content from Internet sites without permission, reducing traffic to those sites and hindering advertising revenue. This may reduce content creation on Internet sites by reducing the editing rights of content creators, which may ultimately lead to a decrease in advertising revenue. In particular, Facebook continues to block archive.today operators every time they create an account .
  • Personal information infringement issue - According to the Personal Information Protection Act, when collecting personal information, the purpose and period of retention, etc. must be determined with the consent of the person for whom personal information is being collected, and there must be a method for later destruction. However, this service claims that it will collect and even permanently store content containing personal information such as name, photo, email, ID, IP address, homepage, privacy, religion, political opinions, and sexual orientation without the consent of the person concerned. Although there is a formal request for deletion, it is known to be difficult to delete in reality. This can be a problem not only with personal information protection laws, but also with portrait rights and defamation. Moreover , it appears to directly ignore the constitutional right to pursue happiness , such as the right to be forgotten, which has come to the fore these days . Victims may experience significant suffering. Since the server is located overseas, it seems difficult to legally regulate the damage.
  • Deletion is virtually impossible - collecting and preserving may be all it takes, but the act of making it public for anyone to see can itself be embroiled in legal controversy, so most archive sites properly respond to most requests for deletion. However, in the case of archive.today, this is a problem because most deletion requests themselves are fundamentally ignored or rejected . The contact information itself is all fake, and even impersonates other company addresses.

Below are technical notes.

Be careful because the page you save does not save all data. Things that don't store much include Flash files or anything based on Flash, video or sound, PDF, RSS, XML, etc. There is a 50 MB storage limit.

In addition, services with some degree of closure, such as Daum Cafe, may not be stored properly.

More details can be found in the FAQ .

Some sites are blocked by archiving. In the case of Naver blogs , the encryption is used to break the Hangul strangely, and if the image is excessively, the image quality is blurry.[19] Of course , you can bypass the Naver blog with a Wei bag machine and then back up to Archive.is with that way back machine.

In the case of Twitter links, the number of retweets is not displayed, so it is not properly archived.

Some of the archiving servers are in IP ranges blocked by namuwiki, so if you try to archive namuwiki documents starting from the end of April 2020, you will receive a 403 error. It is presumed that multiple servers are being used internally, rotating them according to period.

6. history

In fact, if you use the search term operator site, the search becomes more accurate. The result of searching for archive.is using the site operator and applying the Korean filter

Looking at this point, it may seem like a useful webpage, but its real purpose is to capture and preserve dark history .
Although it is a useful website before, it is actually the first to be introduced to the League Veda/Namuwiki in case of emergency in case of privatization .[20] Since then, the women's era explanation manipulation has been regularized as a backup 밎 밎 that has emerged as the continuous anti -moon of relevant documents and the deletion of the original data in the documents, such as women 's era/incident accidents by women 's times, became a problem.

From the end of August 2015, a Korean translation will appear.

January 21, 2019 was not connected. If you hit the address, you can't connect to this page. It is presumed to be a server problem.

After 2020, it will be connected smoothly.

There was also no access on September 8, 2021 .

As of November 13, 2023, access is not possible.

Even in December 2023, there is no access. The reason is unknown.

As of December 18, 2023, the connection is working smoothly.

As of 11 PM on November 22, 2024, there are cases where it works well, but sometimes when you try to archive, a Server Error text appears and the archive does not proceed.[21]

7. incidents and accidents

7.1. Access blocking issue in 2026

  • On November 13, 2025, the FBI issued a subpoena to the site's domain registrar seeking information about the site's operators for a "federal criminal investigation." #[22] From this point on, the site began to become unstable.
    • In response, the operator tweeted on November 16, 2025 that legal attacks and pressure are continuing to come in from organizations such as FAKE WAAD. # #
  • On January 21, 2026, a tweet was posted saying that companies were sending requests to delete old terms of use. #

7.2. DDoS code injection and archive manipulation

File:archive.tod...

Around January 2026, archive.today inserted a JavaScript code into the CAPTCHA page of a blog run by a man named Jani Patokallio that caused requests to be sent to a specific blog indefinitely every 300 milliseconds. Currently, uBlock Origin and AdGuard have blocked this through filter updates. Jani Patokallio posted about the identity of the administrator of archive.today. Accordingly, a person named "Nora" from archive.today sent an email to the blog owner telling him to delete the post and threatening to create a gay dating app with the same name by putting his name in AI porn-related words if he did not comply.

In addition, many cases were discovered in which snapshot contents were manipulated by inserting the name of the person running the blog above into some of the content archived by archive.today. #

As evidence was discovered that archive.today was arbitrarily manipulating archives, Wikipedia decided to blacklist this site and delete approximately 695,000 links from Wikipedia. #

Currently, the site's blog is asserting its innocence through a Q&A with anonymous supporters in which they praise each other. However, we must take into account that these claims are one-sided claims coming from the operator of a website that posts numerous illegal materials without permission and even modifies the content to the operator's liking while claiming to be an archive.

8. how to block

  • It is said that Efem Korea has prevented the service from being spread, and the method of blocking it has been made public in a notice. As of April 3, 2018, it is said that if the site operator blocks the 46.166.139.0/24 and 185.22.174.0/24 IP bands, sharing will not be possible. Archive.is has blocked the ability to save EfemKorea pages . However, it is still being archived. It is presumed that archive.is is periodically changing the IP band it is using, and it should be blocked every time the IP band it uses changes.
  • Since early 2019, it seemed like the service had been blocked from spreading on Cog , but it was released again.
  • According to some web server operators, if they block the IP range, they change the IP range, and the User-Agent[23] It is said that it cannot be blocked by pretending to be a regular browser, and in some cases, it even uses Tor to try to connect. It can be prevented, but it is quite cumbersome and difficult to prevent.

  • Similar sites include Wayback Machine , WebCite , and thefact.io .
    • In fact, the end plate king of the Internet archive is the Wei bag machine of the Internet archive.[24][25][26]
It has its own mobile app and browser extension, and it is not particularly convenient in terms of convenience because it can be archived by simply entering the address and clicking the mouse to save it. Because it operates under the concept of a global library, the Wayback Machine has a wide range of functions beyond simple taxidermy.[27] namuwiki archive using the Wayback Machine. As a result, the scale is larger and the stability of servers and backups is more reliable. Global donations used for operations are a bonus.
  • If you click any link (except the download button) on the archived web page, you will be directed to the parking site .[28] As you can see from the parking site documentation, most parking sites are unreliable. Never download an app or APK file that prompts you to install it here and press Back. → Now (12.3), it seems that they do not go to phishing sites.
  • If you use Cloudflare DNS such as 1.1.1.1 or 1.0.0.1, you will not be able to connect. It is said that archive.today blocked it on purpose. # #
  • At around 11:40 on January 4, 2021, there was no connection for a while. At around 11:48, the connection was working smoothly.
  • Sometimes, the server crashes and archiving is impossible. In this case, you will have to wait until archiving.
  • Real-time archiving is impossible. Archiving must be done every 5 hours.
  • At approximately 8:22 PM on May 10, 2021, access was temporarily unavailable. The connection became smooth around 9:25 PM, but archiving was not possible due to a server error.
  • Supports and pursues OSINT .
  • It has the advantage of being able to store deep websites such as Tor . #
  • It is said that intranets cannot archive.
  • If you archive articles from media outlets that have adopted a paywall, the paywall will be removed. So, we added it to the paywall bypass user script so that it can be used as one of the bypass methods along with 12ft.io.[29]
  • In November 2025, news broke that the FBI was tracking the operators of archive.today. #
  • Russia's Roskomdnadzor and Transtalacom (TTK), March 25, 2026[30] There was news that this hosting was secretly blocked. #[31]
    • However, even if the hosting is blocked, there is a high possibility of migrating to another server that will not be affected.
    • Normal access is possible as of April 4, 2026. It is presumed that the server was changed to one with less influence from Trans Telecom or that it was a problem with the line passing through Trans Telecom.

[1] We are moving domains and storage servers periodically. They mainly use European servers that do not comply with American laws, and among the servers, there was even a pirate server with a promotional message that said, "We hate American laws."[2] Currently, perhaps because there are no more servers to escape to, they have moved to helping cyber asylum using Russian IPs.[3] The operator directly states that it is $2000/mo, so you may be mistaken for $2000 per megaoctet, but it is not an octet but a month ( mo nth). Maybe that's why the management couldn't guarantee how long they could archive . It is said that the technical problem is solved in two or three hours and there is no data loss, so if the archive disappears, it is expected that it will disappear due to another problem.[6] There is a high probability that it is just a lie. See paragraph 4 . It appears that multiple domains are being used to avoid legal interference or blocking.[7] It connects to the old address archived in the current archive.md.[11] The operator said in January 2019 that the IS domain could not be used in the future, but as of May 13, 2021, it is still accessible. Looks like the problem has been resolved.[14] When using Avast, it says that the address is blacklisted and does not connect. The reason is unknown.[Tor] A site exclusively for Tor browser .[16] Archives are also available in the mobile version. However, since images sometimes appear corrupted and output, it is recommended to archive them on a PC.[17] For reference, the logo in the very early days of namuwiki was simply "namuwiki" in Gothic type.[18] Wei -back machines are often ignored by individuals' requests for deletion.[19] Naver Pum works well without such things.[20] The taxidermy at this time was not actually useful at the time when the incident was in full swing, but it finally came to light when the server exploded.[21] The exact reason is unknown.[22] Behind the complaints: Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today[23] HTTP header containing information about the client connecting to the server . In simple terms, it contains information about which computer and which software was used to access this web page.[24] Originally, when talking about archives in Korea, people usually used the Wayback Machine and archive.today was considered trivial . However, during the 2015 Women's Era Movement, people who were archiving web pages used archive.today instead of the Wayback Machine, and it gained tremendous recognition in Korea. It has grown so much that a document has been created on namuwiki. Currently, it is limited to Korea and is even more popular than Wayback Machine. Right now, namuwiki's document volume is much larger than archive.today's.[25] The current situation in Korea, where archive.today is used instead of a better site called Wayback Machine, cannot be said to be a very positive phenomenon. To use an analogy, there are vaccines that are more powerful than pills , and there are vaccines that are more powerful than pills, but for some reason (Eastsoft's large-scale promotion/women's era crisis), it has gained recognition beyond its actual specifications, so many people have become accustomed to it, and it is immediately visible. The current situation of domestic archive users is that they just continue to use archive.today because there are no notable shortcomings. Of course, it's just a metaphor, and archive.today doesn't have as many serious drawbacks as pills.[26] However, there are situations where you have no choice but to use archive.today, such as when archiving is not done due to an error like[27] Even if you don't deliberately stuff, you can find the sites of the sites decades ago, and you can also find materials such as classic games and classic books. You can also upload files yourself. It is literally a project for archives .
