About the Author

Joel Best is a professor of sociology and criminal justice at the University of Delaware. Best’s research focuses on understanding how and why we become concerned with particular issues at particular moments in time. He’s written about the ways bad statistics creep into public debates and about dubious fears, such as the mistaken belief that poisoned Halloween candy poses a serious threat to our kids. His books include Damned Lies and Statistics, Kids Gone Wild, The Student Loan Mess and Flavor of the Month.

    I used this book to teach an intro course to social problems, along with other assigned readings, and this book was by far my favorite. It's a very clear description and clear organization. The structure and framework lend themselves well to a course that requires writing or exams. It's not like most of the social problems texts, and in this case, that's a great thing!

    Arrived on time for my Soc 451 class. Best's books are particularly useful for the Sociology major in the field. Best shows how activists, experts, and their opponents engage in producing claims in the real world and how the media then report on these claims, prompting a positive or negative reaction and thus driving public policy. The author uses numerous case studies to reiterate his points.

    I had to get this book for my Social Problems class. We ultimately only read the first half of the book. I felt the author did a great job explaining the content and provided excellent examples to help you understand things even more. My only complaint is that the author can also sometimes get a little repetitive, but it's just to drive the point home. I definitely recommend that if your professor assigns any readings, do the readings. It may take time out of your day but it is here to help you. The book is the size of a typical novel, making transporting it and reading it much more efficient. I also used the book in class and while working on assignments frequently to refer back to some ideas or concepts.
