The Wheel of Time is coming back with a new series and more, and the new plan for the franchise is better than if the Prime Video series had been brought back. The Wheel of Time debuted on Prime Video on November 19, 2021. The series ended up running for three successful seasons, becoming one of Prime Video's best fantasy series.

However, that was not enough to keep it airing, as Prime Video canceled The Wheel of Time on May 23, 2025. According to Deadline, the reason for the show's cancellation was not creative, but financial. Now, The Wheel of Time, which is based on Robert Jordan's fantasy book series, is one of Prime Video's shows canceled too soon. Thankfully, the franchise is already coming back.

While the live-action The Wheel of Time series is done, the fantasy franchise is officially set to return soon with a wide array of projects. According to a new report from Variety, multiple The Wheel of Time adaptations are now in development, including a video game, animated movies, and an animated series. The latter would be the closest to the canceled Prime Video show.

There are many reasons why the news is so exciting. One of them is due to the people who are working on the new The Wheel of Time releases. Arcane producer Thomas Vu is developing the franchise's slate with iwot Studios. Netflix's Arcane is highly regarded as not only one of the best shows on the streamer, but also among fantasy and animated series as a whole.

As such, if the new The Wheel of Time series is anything like Arcane, fans will be winning. Also involved with the projects are iwot Studios CEO Rick Selvage and COO Larry Mondragon, both of whom were producers on Prime Video's The Wheel of Time series. While the latter was a great show, having an 88% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, a new path is for the best.

Sure, there would be many willing to watch Prime Video's The Wheel of Time season 4 if it were to be made. However, there is no denying that the show had to deal with criticism throughout its 3-season run. Early in the show's life, The Wheel of Time was criticized for looking cheap. However, the biggest criticism remains the excessive deviations from the source material.

That is why I'm convinced that a new The Wheel of Time animated series is better than reviving the Prime Video show. With animation, the fantasy franchise would truly be limitless, being able to go as big as necessary to make the series' world look as visually enticing as it should. Magic and fights could also be dialed up to eleven.

All 15 Wheel Of Time Books, Ranked Worst To Best

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time book series contains 14 novels and a prequel, making it worthwhile to rank all the books from worst to best.

Prime Video itself is proof of the potential that a Wheel of Time animated series has. The streaming service is the home of two excellent animated fantasy series, Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein. If the new The Wheel of Time series can hit the same notes as those two fan-favorite fantasy releases, being closer to the books, then it will be a worldwide success.
