The more the sponsors try to oversimplify and sell an anti-Iran draft resolution at the UNSC, the more suspicious it becomes as a tool to legitimize another highly perilous and consequential miscalculation on their part.
In a just world, the UNSC should have adopted a resolution against the American and Israeli regimes for their war of aggression against Iran and against those in the region who made their territories and airspace available to the aggressors, causing:
• The murder of 3,400 Iranian civilians, including 168 schoolchildren at an elementary school in southern Iran;
• The targeting of civilian infrastructure in Iran, inflicting serious damage on the nation's economic backbone;
• The transformation of the Strait of Hormuz into a war zone, including using it as a base from which they attacked Iran, thereby disrupting the flow of energy and trade while now playing innocent;
• The introduction of profound insecurity and instability to the region;
• The holding of the world economy and global energy hostage for the sake of market manipulation—directing importers toward U.S. oil and gas markets and generating higher income through inflated oil prices; and
• The spoiling of any possibility of a diplomatic off-ramp whenever it had a chance to prevail, in full disrespect to the relentless efforts of, including, the mediator(s).
Things are now quite upside down, as seen with UNSC Resolution 2817: the aggressor—the cause of all this devastation—plays the innocent savior, while their regional accomplices play the victim.
Iran is fully prepared to restore normal maritime traffic and guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, provided that the war ends permanently and the illegal blockade is lifted. Iran supports peace, security, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for everyone. Stability in the Persian Gulf must benefit all nations, including the people of Iran.
Reminder 1: Right at the doorstep of a possible diplomatic solution, a day before the war of aggression on Feb. 27, Iran was a genuine party to the talks, while the Americans pretended to engage but were rather building up their military, including through the Strait of Hormuz to the region.
Reminder 2: Before the war of aggression, passage through the Strait of Hormuz was fluid but stopped because the aggressors turned it into a war zone.
