‘E-bike on fire’ in building near Union Square  — S.F. firefighters respond

For the second time in two days, San Francisco firefighters raced to the scene of an e-bike fire in a residential building.

On Sunday night, the San Francisco Fire Department said units had responded to a blaze at a residential hotel on Post Street, just west of Union Square and found an “e-bike on fire.” Three people were assessed for medical issues and released.

Just one day earlier, a person was taken to a hospital after an e-bike’s battery ignited in an apartment building near Mission Dolores, according to the fire department.

The lithium-ion batteries of e-bikes and other mobility devices are a growing problem for firefighters. 

San Francisco Supervisor Bilal Mahmood has proposed legislation to ban the sale of scooters, e-bikes and other devices unless the batteries meet certain safety standards. 

From 2021 to 2025, lithium-ion batteries caused more than 120 fires in San Francisco.
