Q&A
Hey guys. I joined this place at the right time. So what made you guys write in bat girl? Why not Margaret or cj? I'm sure everyone wants to know lol.
First question, great question. We felt like the Margaret / CJ story was complete, and they were both on their own path already. We also felt like Mordecai had moved on in his life. He finally left the park to pursue art, and we thought it'd be cool if he met someone while doing that. But we love Margaret and C.J., and we're sure that they're happy without Mordecai! He was too wishy-washy with them!!
I totally agree I gotta admit I would've disliked the ending a bit more if he ended up with them. But I still thought that was what would happen tbh. It would have felt like mortdecai never matured though. But anyways thanks so much for going out on a high note. It's the type of finale that makes me wanna go watch reruns. Really I'd be surprised if Steven universe or adventure time can end on par with regular show. The show is complete thanks to you guys.
Thank you! A lot of people here don't realize that and feel like Mordecai should have chosen one or the other. It would have been too predictable if that happened. Also, Rigby told Mordecai at the end of "Dumptown USA" that Mordecai should take a break from dating and try to find what he wants for himself out of life, and he did: he has a career in art and he found someone he wasn't awkward around.
Soooooooo.... are we getting a blu-ray box set in the very near future?
That's a Cartoon Network decision. But demand it!!! It would be pretty cool...
Start an online petition! That works sometimes!
The Ending was a perfect way to wrap up the show and the end of and era for me because it was the last show my Son could enjoy and laugh at together - he is 16 now and gone onto Anime - I am ahem in my 40's and appreciated all the 80s/90s pop culture references.
My question was it always the intention to appeal on all levels, not just a "wink" so to speak to your "Grown Up" Audience
Yeah, that's what I always liked about writing the show. All of our ideas come from a place of making us laugh. We wanted to write things that made us laugh (as adults) as well a younger audience. And the 80s references just added to that. Somehow the 80's is goofy enough to appeal to kids while enjoying the comforting weirdness that is "Safety Dance."
Has hamboning ever saved your life before?
No. But one day it will.
Going out with David Bowie's Heroes was pure genius.
Thank you! We thought it was a perfect way to go out.
Do you feel like CN treated Regular Show well? There seems to be a lot of angry feelings on this sub over some of the stuff CN has done with airing s7 and this final season (like having no marathon on the finale date and airing Kill em With Kindness and Meet the Seer last Saturday at noon with no announcement).
Amazing finale btw, almost brought me to tears.
Overall, I feel like the CN treated "Regular Show" very well. When I first saw the pilot, I couldn't believe someone was taking a chance on it. Not because it wasn't good, because it was really good. But because the show was so interesting and grounded and then totally surreal. I hadn't seen anything like it, and the CN was smart enough to give it a shot. And then while we were getting started, they were encouraging, and then once we got going, they let us do whatever we wanted to do (within reason) forever. Like 8 seasons of really excellent creative freedom. And I've worked at many different places where that is not the case at all. Most places note their shows to death. But the CN is fairly hands off. The CN really respects the artist, and that's so rare in TV. So for that, I'm totally grateful to them and think that they treated us well.
Having said that, yeah, I mean I think the last few seasons weren't aired as well as they could have been. I'm not a fan of dumping a bunch of episodes at once, and they've been doing that with all of the shows. No-one has explained to me why that helps, and I don't think it helped us. And I agree that the Saturday premiere coupled with running Teen Titans Go all day and then Shrek and THEN our series finale was not cool. I thought it deserved more of a "Regular Show" send-off. But in their defense, they have a business to run, and we're not a part of the future of that business. And we had been on the air for eight seasons! That's a long time! So I guess they figured that it had to end, and they'll end it with more of a whimper than a bang.
At the end of the day though, they fostered an environment for "Regular Show" to succeed, and that's all that mattered. On another network, we wouldn't have lasted long at all. So for that (and a job for seven years - um...pretty cool), I'll always appreciate the CN and how they treated us and let us be anything but regular.
Classy. I expected nothing less. Rad answer.
Getting Mark Hamill to say iconic Star Wars lines must have been crazy! I know there was "A long time ago, in a high school far, far away" in Skips' Story, and "I have a bad feeling about this" during the finale. Were there any others I missed?
haha, i think those are the main two. I remember in Skips Story I had the babies say "Help us Skips, you're our only hope."
I remember the day he had to record for Skips Story. He would always come in cold and never read the script beforehand (he's a busy guy) and when he came to that "A long time ago..." line, he facepalmed and was like "oh brother."
Once he said, "help me, Obenson Kenobi. You're my only hope."
Excellent series and a fantastic ending. Thanks to all involved. My wife and I are big fans.. Some questions...
A complete dvd or bluray set? Is that a possibility. (even if only a ldt edition). Was the way Pops went out discussed a long time go? Seems there was a lot of forshadowing in older eps..
How come Thomas did not make an appearance in the finale?
Again, thanks! 8 seasons is a huge accomplishment and I believe you folks created a classic show that will not be forgotten.
I feel like we started talking about Pops being the key to the universe around Season 6. It was definitely a few seasons ago. We weren't sure exactly how he'd show this, but he was deemed magical (in our heads) a little ways back.
Thomas did not make an appearance in the finale because he was trapped back on Earth. Perhaps in a submarine of some sort.
I was really happy with the last season, and it's super cool of you guys to do this! Two questions:
One: What's the name of the bat girl Mordecai ends up with?
Two: Where do Margaret and CJ end up, and do they stay friends with Eileen and Rigby?
One: we never named Mordecai's wife. I guess we should. JG loves Goonies so I'm going to say her name is Stef.
Two: I imagine that Margaret has advanced in the news world, and she's currently traveling the world reporting on global events that finally get her out of town. She's definitely still friends with Eileen and keeps up with Mordecai. They still laugh about how weird their brief relationship was. C.J. moved on to play professional dodgeball, but she doesn't talk to any of them anymore.
Now that the series is over, what are you or the other members of the Regular Show crew planning on doing?
What happened to the use of licensed music in later seasons? Budget issues?
bottom line is that it's reallllllly expensive to license songs and we're only budgeted for so much. We saved almost all that budget for "Heroes"
Thank you for also using Dragonforce, it brought me so much joy!
Seriously guys, this show was a blessing. I remember watching the first episode in 6th grade, now I'm a senior in high school, and never would I realize a show like this one would be so incredible. The characters are so well written, the stories are so entertaining, and the ending honestly left me in tears, both sad ones that now one of my favorite shows is gone, but happy ones that the characters I loved so much have a happy ending. From the bottom of my heart, thank you guys for this show.
Anyway, question for Matt: I'm an aspiring screenwriter, and I sometimes have a hard time creating good characters, are there any tips you can give to help me and maybe writers like me who sometimes have the same problem?
Thanks very much for your comment!
That's also a great question about character development. I always like creating a character around something real. Whether that thing comes from someone that I'm really close with (a good friend, an ex-girlfriend, etc) or just from something that I observed at Yogurtland (lots of characters there), I feel like it's more genuine to begin that way. And if you come at the character more in that way, then you can hear the character in your head more. I'm always jotting stuff down that I hear people say or do. Then I refer to it later.
Does any of that help?? Because there are a million other ways too...
Thanks for contributing to one of the best animated shows out there! It's been a good couple of years that I won't be forgetting.
Are there any potential plans for a public release of some of the score of the show? I believe Mark Mothersbaugh composed some of it and his work is quite interesting.
Also, are there any plans or ideas for the future for Quintel and the rest of the Regular Show crew? I personally would love to see a show on Adult Swim where the space for even more outlandish ideas to toy around with is possible, with minor limitations. Regular Show was the kind of series that striked me as being primarily aimed more so to that kind of audience and, if my knowledge serves correctly, it was originally destined to lean in Adult Swim's favour.
Wish you all the best!
i thought it was insanely cute to see rigby and eileen with kids. sorry no questions :p
What was your favorite episode to create?
Personally, my favorite episode I ever worked on was TGI Tuesday, if for nothing else I got the line "these burritos taste like failure" in.
I loved "Eggscellent." It took over a year to write, with many stops and starts. At one point there was a Vomit Man who helped train Mordecai, but the CN thought a Vomit Man was too gross. But that was a great example of believing in a story and continuing to make it better. And I thought it had all of the elements that I love about the show. I also loved making the finale. I was really proud of that one, especially the last three minutes.
