I am dissapointed by this. There is no way there is no ulterior motive with this. If you start putting AI and start becoming an Agentic app im leaving Blender.

Then why are they funding them in the first place? Anthropic has already proven they don't care even a little bit about artists. This move makes no sense from either side.
A lot of times corporate donations to FOSS and community projects are a combination of tax writeoffs (or similar) and an attempt at buying good will and advertising. They have reasons, even if it winds up being the normal corporate sleaziness
Taking money from these people sucks, because they have it almost entirely thanks to directly stealing from your users.
Blender is a guiding light in the realm of human creativity. A miraculous tool. AI firms are thieves and ghouls, slurping up centuries of authentic human expression and vomiting back a pale imitation devoid of meaning or emotion. These things should not be associated with each other.
they're just yoinking VC money indirectly, anthropic got no say on blender development and, most importantly, they make no money lmao, all the anthropic money is just secondhand investor money this just hastens their collapse
I mean I see the point you're making but it's still like a lung cancer charity taking money from big tobacco. There are always lines.
autodesk and adobe are also sponsors, open source projects often have this happen and so far i havent heard of any of them shifting focus bc of that. we gotta be pragmatical here, like i fucking HAAAAAAAAAAAATE ai with a passion, but idm slurping their VC money dry for a better blender
I'm going to decide to hope you're right 😀
Involving AI is your products in any way, particularly because of your standing within the art community as a free alternative, means your software is DOA. Wouldn’t expect much support from all those calls for donations in the future if you decide to keep this partnership.
And maybe recovering funding from AI slop is the plan to be sustainable long term… Except it’s not much of a plan because the bubble is going to pop in a few quarters and you will have lost the trust of the only people who would care enough to continue supporting the project in the future.
hmm. dunno about this one man.
saw the video. take their money I guess. if what you say is true, and it's only their money, and they have zero influence on core development, might as well put it to good use.
it's not like anthropic is profitable anyway, fuck em.
Huh… well great for getting more funding for the blender project, but what the hell does an AI slop company want with an artistic tool?
Just read the article about this that blender made and I’m internally puking, disgusting take on this god awful company
what in the reputation washing hell is this
disappointing and gross, a slap in the face to the vast majority of blender's users and all artists. reconsidering my monthly donation
*what could possibly go wrong?!?*

WTF does AI have to do with 3D modeling software gen Q
I don't care if Anthropic remains passive on Blender's development it's incredibly scummy to take their money after all the work they've done AGAINST artists like us.
So, they are investing in this tool to train their models on your user content?
wow blender just got way less attractive to learn.
Welp, best not update my Blender install again...
Them: "This is ONLY a donation, not a buyout/in" Literally everyone with half a lick of sense: "First of all, fuck you for taking their blood money. Secondly, YET. It's not a buyout YET."
So the digital artisan company for hand made products decided to take money from the non hand made ai hallucinations company . . . Got it . . . Welp, time to ditch blender i guess (throws all half baked model attempts into the ocean)
What an absolute gutpunch Regardless of direct control holding millions over your head is pretty damn controlling I hope we get a clean fork and a new foundation with actual sense.
I thought your whole deal was that you don't do stuff like this
Blender will get forked if you take ai-driven contributions. Please be very careful :/.
sorry to burst your bubble but it has been for a while now and no such fork exists I am on your side though, it disappoints me seeing this too
That’s interesting that a 3D modeling software company would partner with a company that wants to make 3D modelers irrelevant. But the people that made this decision wont care. They’ll be part of the 10% of employees that don’t get fired. The ones that don’t do any work but get paid the most.
go ahead and take their money, but if I see a single "AI is cool actually" post or "AI" feature I'm done using Blender for good.
It's probably a lot of money, but refuse that, nothing good can come from it.
Not updating blender for now on, i hope yall hear for the public and undo that before yall lose all the creatives yall raised to kindly

i was going to do a full commentary about how you seem to not have life defending such slopping company But gonna leave this and that will be it www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gay...
It sucks but Anthropic just wants their logo on Blender's website next to Epic and whomever else. There's no other reason and it's just how cheap money is to this company. Do not panic
Well I guess I won't be learning to use Blender then.
you can just not post about this one on bluesky man, just leave it as a press release somewhere you don’t gotta drag your whole shit across the broken glass like this
Oh my goodness absolutely fucking not.
Even if explained in the policy, still find this rather unpleasant. Anthropic's own announcement also spins this quite differently... it is not a good reflection to promote Anthropic in this way, and even if not affecting decision-making, still find it highly distasteful to accept funding from them.
Agreed. Plus once they start accepting anthropic's money, what's to stop them from being strong armed by anthropic to shove ai in anyway? I don't particularly trust anthropic and ai bros have a habit of going back on their word to put it lightly.
Probably not really alarming and with no consequences in the long run, but you have to, at least, acknowledge how BAD it feels. These guys are just ghouls in a death cult to replace every human creating anything with their propietary monetized bot. And boosting the police state, that too.
You’re not really reading the room here are you?
I have previously donated to blender, I no longer feel comfortable having done that. Guess it goes to show you can't trust companies no matter how good they are in the past.
Time to donate my life savings to blender bsky.app/profile/pili...

Damn what will they do with the extra $40?
I saw that clip before i posted my comment. They can claim blender won't be adding ai all they want. But I've seen this shit before. Once they start accepting the money, it will be harder and harder to resist their benefactors as they push to shove ai into anything they can. It's a slippery slope.
If you have something you'd like to say, you can make a constructive arguement instead of leaving snarky comment on my or other people's replies. That is an option.
if only :(

Oof, this sucks... I know Blender’s fund statement says donors have no influence on development but.. the Blender devs have already spent resources making a special connector for Claude integration so.. 😓

They also have Meta, Google and Adobe as sponsors (and have for a long time) and that hasn't ruined Blender development either, so I think people are overreacting to this. You can argue it's a bad look but that's true of those other companies too, and ultimately goes to making free software for all.
if we're all just linking replies in the same thread.. 🙃 bsky.app/profile/jonk...

I think some reaction to this is warranted, as the devs didn't build any special integrations for Adobe, Google, etc. which they specifically have for Claude in this case..
/s and I know Anthropic has no control over Blender foundation. But I'm just curious what their motive is ? They surely don't use Blender nor need it. Advertisement ? Maybe providing Claude plans to Blender devs ?
There's a recent Claude announcement about integrating with blender and other design tools The money probably related to bettering the python API for a smoother integration with LLMs
Hopefully, I just read the blog post. I hope the devs don't use Claude considering license conflicts with Blender being GPL. I hate Anthropic, they are main reason behind so many spam PRs on many foss tools.
I heard your product was good so why do this
Oh no. Please reconsider.
