"Mr. Trump didn't just happen to America. He was elected, twice – the second time after attempting a coup. That alone should tell us that something fundamental has changed in American society, that it is so broken that one half of it could knowingly put a degenerate lunatic in the White House just to spite the other half."

The Globe and Mail · Trump may be temporary. The damage he is doing isn’tBy Andrew Coyne

"He has used his time in office, what is more, to change America further – especially the second time around. The Republican Party has been utterly transformed, at every level. There is nothing left of the democratic, free-market, world-leading Republicanism of old."

"Mr. Trump and his officials have not only broken every law, subverted every institution, assaulted every critic and betrayed every ally. They have normalized attitudes and behaviour that were previously beyond the pale. It will not be easy to un-normalize them."

"It makes perfect sense that it is the pope who has emerged as the anti-Trump, because Trump represents the polar opposite of Christianity. He has little regard for the poor, but reveres the rich. When he speaks of faith, he means self-belief – confidence in his own greatness."

The Guardian · It’s no surprise Trump has met his match in Pope Leo – the US president represents the polar opposite of ChristianityBy Jonathan Freedland

"It’s one reason why Pete Hegseth’s accidental delivery of the gospel according to Quentin Tarantino, mistakenly quoting Pulp Fiction rather than Ezekiel, registered so widely: it laid bare that the Christianity of Trump and his circle is, like the decor at Mar-a-Lago, gaudy and fake."

"Finally, Pope Leo XIV has permission.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Friday conceded some authority to the pope. 'The pope’s gonna do his thing, that’s fine,' Hegseth said, answering a question about the pontiff’s criticism of the administration’s war on Iran. ...

Of course, Hegseth has spent past several weeks justifying the war in divine terms."

TPM - Talking Points Memo · Saved! Pete Hegseth Gives the Pope Leeway to ‘Do His Thing’By Josh Kovensky

@wdlindsy if only there was a word to describe someone being the antithesis of Christianity, antichristianity-peron, antijesus-man, I'll workshop it a bit more, maybe there's a German word for it...

@tstruthers @wdlindsy

The Germans have a word for everything. So I believe the term you're looking for is "Der Antichrist", though I have no idea how to translate it into English.

She loves those flappy sleeves - especially when she gets a-prophesying and speaking in tongues.

@wdlindsy

Mmmm, Springer was when things started breaking down, yes

@wdlindsy

I disagree that Trump was elected twice. Putin has been elected a bunch of times too. So was Victor Orban. But those elections were not democratic, & neither are elections in the USA.

Intimidation tactics, voter suppression laws, gerrymandering, oppression of media, and Elon Musk's payouts to voters are not democratic. To say that half of us elected him is a lie.

@FranceskaMann @wdlindsy Trump received voted from about a third of the eligible voters. Many people did not vote in 2024.

@wdlindsy @EricFielding

discouragement is a voter suppression tactic as well.
Every problem we have in this world could be solved easily. Tax billionaires out of existence. They are buying our elections so that they can steal everything from the Commons.
