Climbing vacuums to cyber pets: What were the highlights of CES 2026?

CES 2026 has offered a glimpse of a future that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie.

The tech show has featured bendable screens, paper-thin TVs and cars and gadgets that can think for themselves as they get to know you and your family’s wants and needs.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said: “The ChatGPT moment for physical AI is here.”

Here is a recap of some of the attention-grabbing gadgets at CES 2026, the annual technology trade show in Las Vegas:

– Star Wars and Lego

Lego leaned heavily into fan nostalgia this week to unveil its latest innovation, enlisting Lucasfilm chief creative officer David Filoni and a line-up of Star Wars characters, including Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and X-wing pilots.

On Monday, the company introduced Lego Smart Play, a new platform built around connected bricks, tags and specially designed mini-figures in partnership with Star Wars.

These smart bricks are equipped with sensors that detect light and distance, triggering coordinated lights and sounds when used together to bring builds to life.

The platform allows fans to build interactive scenes, like space battles or lightsaber duels.

– Real buttons are back

Clicks Technology is reviving the physical phone keyboard with its magnetic Qwerty model that clips on phones.

Co-founder Jeff Gadway said the company’s Power Keyboard “is one keyboard for all your smart devices”.

It features a full Qwerty layout, with directional keys and a number row, in a throwback to the Blackberry era of smartphones for those who miss real buttons. The company said it also doubles as a wireless power bank.

– Return of LG’s Wallpaper TV line

TV announcements are a common feature at CES — some big, some small, some even transparent. But LG brought something distinct this year – an OLED TV that’s only 9mm thick.

The South Korean tech company announced the OLED evo W6 model from its Wallpaper line just ahead of CES but reporters and industry representatives were able to see it for the first time at the show.

As advertised, the screen displays video nearly edge-to-edge and is ridiculously thin (though it does not roll up like its name implies). Like the previous models in its Wallpaper line, the TV’s inputs are housed in a box that sits nearby.

LG representatives claim you can seamlessly stream 4K video and audio to the screen. No pricing was available but the new TV will be available in 77 and 83-inch sizes.

– The vacuum that can climb stairs

Chinese robovac maker Roborock introduced a vacuum that literally sprouts chicken-like legs to navigate up and down stairs. There are vacuums out there capable of this feat (and there were even a few others at CES) but this one actually cleans the steps along the way.

The newly introduced Saros Rover took its time in its ascent and descent during the demo on the showroom floor, but Roborock said it will be able to traverse almost any style of stairwell, including spiralled and curved. Unfortunately, no release date was given for the Rover, which the company says is still in development.

– Razer goes the smart glasses route with headphones

Gaming tech company Razer brought a very interesting concept to CES, a set of over-ear headphones that can largely replicate the capabilities of currently available smart glasses.

During the demo, Razer’s host asked the AI-powered headset — dubbed Project Motoko — to translate a Japanese restaurant menu into English.

The headphones see using built-in cameras and take audio inputs from microphones. What AI model serves as the base of the headphones is up to the user, and it sounded like the usual suspects were supported — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude.

While it is being developed largely as a consumer product, Razer did mention that it could be sold to businesses to gather data to train AI models.

– A ‘cyber pet’ that turned heads at CES

Chinese tech brand Ollobot has pitched a futuristic alternative to cats and dogs – a rolling, purple “cyber pet” named OlloNi.

Part plush toy, part AI robot, OlloNi is designed to feel warm and expressive, unlike the stiff, humanoid home robots that often dominate robotics, the company said.

OlloNi uses a screen mounted at its neck, making eye contact and cycling through thousands of animated expressions meant to mirror human emotion and interaction.

Scratch behind its fuzzy “ears” and OlloNi’s wide digital “eyes” pop open in apparent delight, which drew attention and laughs from passers-by on the show floor.

– Extended-reality platform aims to help process grief

VHEX Lab showcased its SITh.XRaedo, an immersive extended-reality grief therapy platform that creates a virtual avatar from a single photo and, according to the company, is guided in real time by a trained XR therapist.

Wearing a virtual reality headset, users can speak with the avatar, which responds through speech, nods, smiles and other gestures.

The company, which won a digital health innovation award at CES, said the platform is designed to help people process grief and find closure, offering an alternative way to mourn.

– Uber drives back into the robotaxi game

Uber used CES to pull back the curtain on its upcoming robotaxi, offering the public a first look at a self-driving vehicle developed with luxury EV maker Lucid Motors and autonomous technology company Nuro.

Uber called it the most premium robotaxi yet, with cameras, sensors and radar for full 360-degree awareness, along with a sleek, low-profile roof “halo” fitted with LED screens that display a rider’s initials and ride status. Inside, passengers can tailor the temperature, seat heating and music, while on-screen visuals show what the vehicle sees and the route it plans to follow in real time.

The companies said on-road testing, led by Nuro, began in the San Francisco area last month, as they work toward launching the service before the end of the year.

China unveils technological breakthrough that could one day propel drones indefinitely

Chinese scientists have developed a special power transmission platform to charge drones mid-air using microwaves, a proof-of-concept design that may one day lead to UAVs flying indefinitely.

Researchers from China’s Xidian University envision the platform to be developed into a land-based vehicle capable of launching and extending the operational reach of drones.

Tests conducted by scientists showed that the car-mounted system could keep fixed-wing drones in the air for just over 3 hours at an altitude of 15m.

The car-mounted power transmission system used a microwave emitter to beam energy to an antenna array on the aircraft’s underside, doing so while both the drone and the charging system were in motion.

However, maintaining alignment between the microwave emitter and the drone was difficult, researchers noted in a study published in the journal Aeronautical Science & Technology.

This required close coordination between GPS positioning and onboard flight control systems, they said.

Scientists noted that the system was still in infancy as only about 3 to 5 per cent of the beamed energy reached the drone, with a vast majority of the microwave energy wasted.

Ultimately, the power received by the drone also fluctuated due to wind and positioning errors.

The team was led by Xidian University professor Song Liwei, a specialist in the research of antenna structures and microwave wireless energy transmission.

In recent years, the concept of converting ambient and directed electromagnetic energy into usable direct electrical power has transitioned from a research prototype stage to a standardisation-ready technology.

Last year, the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) achieved a new record in transmitting energy over distance, relaying 800 watts of power using a laser beam over 8.6km for over 30 seconds.

While the efficiency of the system was only about 20 per cent, Darpa noted that improvements were possible as the technology became more affordable.

An ongoing US defence project is aiming to develop a “wireless energy web” for near-instantaneous energy transport.

Unlike the latest Chinese study, the Darpa design hopes to achieve long-distance power transmission using a ground-sourced laser passing through multiple airborne nodes and back down to a ground receiver.

The US agency hopes the network will enable unlimited range or endurance for fleets of drones.

From soldier to developer: How German troops are test building their own drones

During last month's multinational exercise Grand Quadriga 2026, German troops in Seedorf weren't just training with drones, they were also building them.

Instead of traditional live-fire drills, troops used reconnaissance drones, real-time data links and FPV systems to identify targets and engage them within seconds. FPV (first-person view) drones are unmanned aircraft piloted remotely fitted with an onboard camera, offering operators a live, direct view.

As part of the so-called "Spark Cells" programme, soldiers worked alongside the Bundeswehr's Cyber Innovation Hub (CIHBw) to build, test and refine some of these small unmanned systems themselves.

The aim is to ensure they can adapt and repair them independently if needed. The German army uses the term "Spark Cells" to describe small, decentralised innovation units set up by the CIHBw.

Founded in 2017 and established as the army's innovation unit three years later, the CIHBw is intended to speed up the introduction of new technologies into the armed forces. It works with soldiers, start-ups and companies, testing solutions directly in the field. Rather than relying on lengthy development cycles, prototypes are developed and trialled early with troops. Organisationally, it falls under the Federal Ministry of Defence.

Data as the new ammunition

Modern warfare is becoming increasingly digital and unmanned. Lessons from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and more recently from the Iran war, have underlined just how central drones have become to military operations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said Ukrainian forces had, for the first time, captured a Russian position using only unmanned systems, including drones and ground-based robots.

Speaking to Euronews, a spokesperson for the Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr said drones are no longer just an add-on, but a "structurally defining element of modern warfare," transforming reconnaissance, strike capabilities and decision-making cycles.

"Those who control airspace at a tactical level gain speed, transparency and precision at a strategic scale," the spokesperson said. Modern warfare, he added, is "technology-driven, data-based and, above all, faster."

In an interview with Euronews, Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Dr Christian Freuding described data as a central resource, calling it "a form of ammunition."

"Those who can see more, and process information faster and more effectively, can build a clearer picture of the battlefield, make decisions more quickly and act with greater precision," Freuding said. "In short: they win."

This shift is not just transforming the German army, it's redefining the role of the soldier. Today's troops are expected not only to operate systems, but to understand, question and even refine them.

"Technological literacy, improvisation and networked thinking are now as vital as traditional skills," the CIHBw-spokesperson said. In other words, the modern soldier is no longer just a user, but a co-developer.

'The future doesn't wait for authorisation'

This approach was put into practice during the exercise in Seedorf. Troops from Airborne Engineer Company 270 and Paratrooper Regiment 31 were not only training with drones, they were building them. Drawing on their understanding of individual components, soldiers developed their own FPV drones, assembling prototypes, testing them in simulators and in real-world conditions, and continuously refining them.

According to the CIHBw, the process involved 3D printers and commercially available electronic components. But beyond the technical aspect, officials say the shift reflects a broader cultural change. "What we are seeing is a move away from the soldier as a pure user towards an active designer," the CIHBw spokesperson told Euronews.

"That's a decisive factor for an adaptive and resilient armed force." The reasoning is simple: speed. "The future doesn't wait for authorisation," the spokesperson said. "If there is a concrete problem in the field, the fastest way to find a solution is often the most direct one. Soldiers know their requirements best."

Allowing troops to develop and test their own systems, they added, creates "speed and operational relevance." At the same time, the German army stresses this is not about replacing industry, but complementing it. The goal is a "hybrid model", combining centrally procured systems with decentralised adaptation and development within the force, while reducing dependencies and increasing flexibility.

According to the spokesperson, the key question is no longer whether soldiers should develop their own solutions, but how to organise them effectively. The Bundeswehr's Cyber Innovation Hub acts as a bridge between troops, technology and start-ups, helping turn ideas from the field into workable solutions.

So-called "Spark Cells" are designed to ensure innovation does not only come from the top down, but also from within the ranks. These units identify needs early, test solutions and feed successful approaches back into the system.

At the same time, officials stress that in-house developments must remain aligned with formal procurement processes. There are limits, particularly when it comes to highly sensitive or complex systems, but within those boundaries, the aim is to give soldiers greater room to innovate.

Despite its control of hardware and firmware, Google triggers a surprising number of serious issues for Pixel users after security updates are installed. This pattern has repeated in recent months, and now there’s a new worry for users.

Per 9to5Google, “following the rollout of the April 2026 update on Google Pixel phones, a widespread battery drain issue has hit, but the company is looking into the matter.” There’s no fix as yet, but Google has asked forum users for more info. The number of users complaining is accelerating quickly.

“The sheer amount of attention on this thread tells us this issue is pretty widespread,” 9to5Google says, with reports on Reddit and elsewhere." While those reports continue to build on an issue tracking forum into the “severe idle drain" issue as it has been tagged, others have taken to Reddit.

“What’s more concerning,” Android Central says, “is that it doesn’t seem limited to a specific device. Users across multiple generations, from the Pixel 6 series all the way up to the Pixel 10 lineup, are reporting similar battery drain issues.”

Google has acknowledged the issue — to an extent. Albeit in reality it’s simply polling users and requesting more data. Pixel issues caused by prior updates have not always been addressed quickly, and we have seen some roll on for months.

"Others report that battery drain is noticeable even when the Pixel is in airplane mode," 9to5Google says, “while battery life has been cut to just a few hours of screen time or even cut in half for some.”
