It was an organized attempt by Israel to overthrow the Iranian government. This was what all that talk about bringing back the Shah was about. But this plan failed and that's been memoryholed now. They now try to salvage what they can from this failure by painting it as "Iran murdering its own people". But they leave out the context, of course.
