Podium hopes alive as for many Europeans
27/02/26 11:14

It’s quarterfinals day in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and the Super 300 tournament still has plenty of Europeans in the race, all aiming for a podium finish.

Many of them will be stepping on Court 1. The day kicks off with an all-European clash between eighth seeds Mads Vestergaard/Christine Busch and Alexander Dunn/Julie Macpherson. The Scots may be lower ranked but they caused an upset yesterday, are carrying momentum, and also won their only previous encounter against the Danes back in 2024. An interesting clash to start the day.

Like the Scots, French duo Julien Maio/William Villeger also had a fantastic day yesterday, defeating Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik. Today they’ll be facing Fang-Chih Lee/Fang-Jen Lee, whom they met in the opening round of this same tournament last year. They couldn’t secure the win then, but if they deliver another performance like yesterday’s, a place in the final four is possible.

Sixth seed Toma Junior Popov will meet Minoru Koga. The Frenchman has never faced the Japanese player before. Koga sits at world number 63 but has defeated Li Shi Feng and Lee Cheuk Yiu this week, coming from qualification. Top seed Christo Popov is facing the experienced Ng Ka Long Angus and will be looking to secure his second medal in Mülheim. In women’s singles, Line Christophersen faces a tough challenge, top seed Wang Zhi Yi.

The Stoeva sisters, also top seeds, meet eighth seeds Bao Li Jing/Luo Xu Min. The Bulgarian pair have stood on the podium three times in Mülheim, all silver medals. Can they make it four?

Nhat Nguyen faces Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen in today’s quarterfinals. The head-to-head stands at 3-0 in favour of the seeded Chi. Kaloyana Nalbantova will play against Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, the fourth seed. Both are just 19 years old, it will be a great clash between two young talents.

We’ll be closing the fourth day of the event with some men’s doubles clashes. The Král brothers face world number three Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang, while Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen will face Chen Bo Yang/Liu Yi. The Danes last won the title here back in 2017, nine years ago.

Matches start at 3pm CET. Stay tuned to our website and social media for the latest updates and content live from Mülheim.
