They produce a lot of it, but what they produce is rife with mock data, hard-coded vars, security flaws, mem leaks, race conditions, and bloat, all of which gets missed by vibe coders who have forgotten (or never learned) how to avoid those problems.

It might be time to rethink how open source licensing works. There are some other, high-profile cases of people's code ending up where they never imagined it could, e.g. Palantir. I don't think it's going to be enough to say, "code for you, but not you." Some other mechanism is needed.

There is some interesting history to pick apart regarding copyleft vs permissive. 20 years ago, when I was naive an unlearned, GPL seemed hostile. Now (being just naive, never could change that part of myself), I realize a lot of it was grossly misrepresented and makes a lot of sense today.

A lot of devs just want to exist in an ideologically pure state that avoids "politics." We need to teach people that it's literally impossible to avoid politics because politics is just human interaction. Everything can, and on a long enough time scale probably will, have a political impact.
