What demented municipality put up a statue of young man molesting a sea turtle?
23
u/curlyqtips Jan 05 '26
It's pretty amazing. The original artist committed suicide after the sculpture began speaking to him.

With a metal roof about 1/32" thick (0.6mm)

I knew a prepper whose ridiculously reinforced safe room was a ground floor bathroom with a urinal.
Must be a club thing.
We Stand Prepared (To Pee)
121
u/Bad-Touch-Monkey Jan 04 '26
That’s a pan roof. You see the flat underside is a pan where reinforced concrete is poured. Usually used as a flooring system in commercial or large multifamily applications. Likely the roof is 4-6in on lightweight concrete with the pitched metal roof on top for aesthetics

35
u/atomic_blonde Jan 04 '26
...holy shit. I feel so incredibly stupid for not making this connection about lessening the load on the septic. After years of casually thinking about getting some, this comment finally sold me.
15
u/socialsecurityguard Jan 04 '26
They sell bidet attachments that hook up to your toilet. You can even tap into the hot water pipe of the sinke to adjust the water temp you use. Highly recommend. You'll love it.
6
u/digitalwankster Jan 04 '26
You don’t even need to hook up to hot water, most of them these days are powered and heat the water on demand.
3
u/burlycabin Jan 04 '26
Finding power next to the toilet might more difficult that hot water though.

The centerpiece of the property is a 2,905 sq. ft. home built with 12-inch exterior walls for strength and efficiency. Security features include a coded front gate, high-quality camera system, and roll-down doors on all entry points. The home has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with quality finishes throughout. Inside the main bedroom, there is a concrete storm room, that has the ability to lock, and remain discreet if needed.
So much more prepper stuff on top of this.

I had family there. This fits 😆

9
u/Banshee_howl Jan 04 '26
I got a bit depressed when I saw I could buy a 4-5 BR lake house for just a bit more than my 120 year old 2 BR cottage on the west coast. Then I considered that lake house would be in Alabama and I have all my teeth. I just wouldn’t fit in.
9
u/aprillerockstar Jan 05 '26
Heyyyyy, most of us have all our teeth these days! Alabama really isn't what people expect overall. Cullman probably is, but there are parts of Alabama that have come a very long way. And Cullman is actually a beautiful place, just a little more old school than, say, Birmingham or Huntsville. But the west coast (and a 120-year-old cottage!) is also amazing, so I wouldn't necessarily say you're missing out!
8
4
u/GoodTheory3304 Jan 04 '26
I live nearby, I mostly attribute ours to redneck engineers that work at the arsenal. Cullman seems like it would be too far of a drive for that, do you have a lot of those types?
18
Jan 04 '26
The house doesn't appeal to me but that's a very cool property, it really has everything.

With the exposed ceiling and fire drop doors, and the standing urinal, it almost reminds me of a bar or winery establishment that serves people food or drinks.

u/Jupitersd2017 Jan 04 '26

56
u/CompleteSavings6307 Jan 04 '26
Exactly. If it was true, its too bad they didnt leave the equipment. Mother of all mancaves would be an actual place where the magic sauce is made.
18
u/Jupitersd2017 Jan 04 '26
Unfortunately they probably had to fire sell it off with all of the craft beers/moonshine/hobby people that pop up and go out of business, the stuff they left looks pretty shiny compared to the much cooler old/slightly rusted look - that would be a cool place

I would say convered farm building, like shop or storage converted to flip/property, those rolling doors good for either loading/unloading or pulling into cover, now looks like a foyer added on to hide them as "storm shutters" but still a corrugated roof, look at pictured 4

Didn't the old New York industrial lofts look like that, before they were all converted into luxury housing?
17
u/DDiamondgem Jan 04 '26
Yes! I’m from NYC and wondering what is so odd about it except the horrible furniture and lack of any type of decoration
→ More replies (1)14
u/Echo-Azure Jan 04 '26
What's so odd about it, is that it's in Alabama. The Alabama countryside!
Trying to make yourself feel like you're in a NYC loft when you're way out in the country, is odd indeed.
9
u/DDiamondgem Jan 04 '26

u/Flat_Reason889 Jan 04 '26
Definitely giving prepper but considering the build date, this feels more like someone who survived the April 2011 tornado outbreak and didn't want to risk it ever again.
Cullman was hit with an EF4 that day. I'd build 12 inch thick walls too.
56
u/ahorrribledrummer Jan 04 '26
You'd probably build a reinforced gabled roof and not a corrugated metal one too.

u/NeedANewHelmet Jan 04 '26
Needs ceilings.
They've tried to do an industrial type look with the exposed steel joists, but the regular household furniture and cabinets just don't work with that aesthetic.
49
u/NonsensicalBumblebee Jan 04 '26
I feel if your place has a certain distinctive style, you just gotta lean into it. The wooden cabinets look horrible there, but if you lean into the industrial style it would probably look great. Add some concrete. Turn the kitchen black and metal. Make the beds metal. Get one of those planning tables as a dinner table. Minimalist couches, and so on and so forth.

u/ALWanders Jan 04 '26
I suspect it is just the end part and doors used as decoration to fit the industrial vibe.

I live near this one. Area is also tornado prone. Seems the Culman area is always getting hit the last few years. Prepping would also fit.
19
u/cybah Jan 04 '26
If it wasn't for the prepper nonsense, the rest of the space gives off 'tv/movie soundstage' vibe with the floroscent lights, high industrial ceilings and hvac, and how all the walls cut off like a tv or movie set.
5
20
u/curlyqtips Jan 04 '26
These prepper houses always make me wonder why they are selling; did they decide that the end times aren't happening after all? Did they buy an island as a prepper upgrade home? Did they die of something mundane before the zombies arrived?
6
u/Substantial-Brick-90 Jan 04 '26
Property tax jumped 224.7% from last year maybe. That’s all that jumps out at me in public records. Public records doesn’t even say it’s for sale, let alone what kind of sale it is so who knows.

Culty prepper bunker.
8
u/papercutsperfume Jan 04 '26
This sub gets a lot of culty architecture, but Cullman is in a tornado corridor that got hit spectacularly hard 15 years ago.
On the afternoon of April 27, 2011, a large, long-tracked, and violent high-end EF4 multi-vortex tornado, known by most as the Cullman–Arab tornado,[1] moved across north-central Alabama, in the United States, striking numerous towns along its 47-mile (76 km) track, including Cullman, Fairview, Arab and Ruth. The tornado killed 6, injured over 40, and impacted hundreds of structures. It occurred as part of the largest tornado outbreak in modern history, and was the second violent tornado of the outbreak, touching down after the Philadelphia, Mississippi tornado.

In the south we call this Red Necks with Paychecks-Especially in Alabama, they show off by building stupid shit like this. I’m surprised it doesn’t have the typical metal Harley or man cave signs up or the always classic stop sign with bullet holes. It’s probably some guy that built this but in order to get his wife to agree to it he had to add some somewhat higher end cabinets and tub etc. for her so she’d come up to “the cabin”.

It reminds me of old 2010s indie horror game maps. Where you can tell the map makers didn't have a lot to work with. Walls/floors/ceilings are the same in every room. Questionable furniture/decoration choices/placements/amounts. Rooms comically larger than needed so you can run away from the monsters.
