Arabic pronunciation is wrong
[edit]As someone else said one month ago, Arabic name pronunciation is wrong on the first line - it says Arabic pronunciation: [ʔaħ.mad ħu.sajn aʃ.ʃara], but should be Arabic pronunciation: ['ʔaħ.mad ħu.'sajn aʃ.'ʃarʕ] ~2025-31595-17 (talk) 13:48, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hard to believe, though I can't confirm or deny if it's the correct pronunciation since I'm very bad at Arabic. Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 07:49, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Not done
- If you don't speak Arabic, why are you even responding to this? I'm sure it's "hard to believe" when you don't know anything about the language. ~2025-33920-33 (talk) 21:29, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
Done - Used an IPA tester. Based on WP:TAIV, this IP user is perhaps nowhere near learning the accuracy of Arabic. Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 23:59, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- It should be checked whether his name is ash-Sharʿ or ash-Sharaʿ though. Because the romanization that was provided mismatched the IPA. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 23:16, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
- I'm reverting the IPA change and the ash-Sharʿ change mainly due to new tests conducted that were mismatching with pronunciations done locally. Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 14:42, 10 January 2026 (UTC)
- You removed a consonant from the IPA though. I’ve restored that one. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 14:54, 10 January 2026 (UTC)

- I don't know what ' is used for in IPA but ʕ seems correct in the revision. ʃara without the ع pronounced is wrong. As for local dialectal pronounciations I asked someone in syria he pronounced it with imala but still with ع. I have no idea if you want to preserve local dialectal pronounciations, if you do then you need the ʕ and imala on the ر. No idea how you represent imala in IPA.
- Bfore you check my IP Address I'm American, I studied Arabic pronounciation here locally through mosques and the like. ~2026-17122-27 (talk) 01:29, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
- The ⟨ˈ⟩ symbol is the stress mark. ~ IvanScrooge98 (talk) 01:36, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
- The suggestion here seems correct in that case according to standard Arabic ~2026-17122-27 (talk) 01:39, 19 March 2026 (UTC)

Ancestry
[edit]Ahmed al-Sharaa's father is on record in Arabic (in both his book and video https://x.com/muslimintern/status/1961131529117094084?s=46) that their family is of Hashemite ancestry. Would be a notable thing to include in his early life section. Lij Iyasu 2.0 (talk) 01:32, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
Assad government
[edit]@Patriotparty1776 How can the Bashar al-Assad government be described without using WP:NPOV? This came up when someone suggested changing it to 'Fall of Ba'athist Syria.' What is the most common way to refer to this topic? This is also a chance to discuss it before I submit any RFCs about using the term 'regime' for Assad. HurricaneEdgar 17:37, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- You just said it yourself. The “Assad government” and “Ba'athist government” are common, neutral terms that are used on other pages, while “regime” violates WP:NPOV. This article is a frequent target for those seeking to spread a pro-HTS and anti-Assad message by using non-neutral language that violates Wikipedia rules. Patriotparty1776 (talk) 20:54, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- However, other articles that are not pro-HTS still include the term “regime,” such as Ba'athist Syria, which is not pro-HTS. This is not the case in the al-Sharaa article itself, but in other articles—including those about the fall of the Assad regime—the term is still used. In fact, “Assad regime” is the WP:COMMONNAME. Additionally, there was discussion after the fall of Assad regarding the use of the term. HurricaneEdgar 22:22, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
- The Ba'athist Syria article is also a frequent target of pro-HTS vandals. Refer to the discussion you linked, in particular the recent comment by User:GeoEvan, as it in fact comes to the conclusion that the use of the word regime "is not good practice in terms of WP:NPOV, and in fact is blatantly inconsistent with its usage in other articles in Wikipedia." The terms "Assad government" and "Ba'athist government" are used frequently in articles that have not been vandalized. I will remind you that reverting constructive edits breaks Wikipedia rules and could result in a ban. Patriotparty1776 (talk) 13:46, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- I reverted the exemption in the article, including the lead and the infobox, but retained “government.” I will begin an RFC later to discuss whether to use “regime” or “government.” Thanks, as this will likely be a long debate. HurricaneEdgar 13:58, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- I’m not sure whether this is a good target, since the Syrian articles, including Bashar al-Assad and Ba'athist Syria, use the word “regime.” HurricaneEdgar 14:36, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
