Queen Elizabeth II was irritated over ‘Tiaragate’ incident with Meghan Markle: Book

(NewsNation) — Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t happy about a wedding tiara incident with Meghan Markle, according to a royal biographer.

In Robert Hardman’s new book “Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story,” he claims that the queen invited Meghan to Buckingham Palace to select a tiara from her personal collection to wear at her wedding with Prince Harry.

The act was customary for the queen and royal brides, Hardman wrote, according to the Daily Mail’s excerpt of the book.

Elizabeth would “pick out a small selection which she thought would suit that bride and ask her round to try them on and choose one,” he wrote, describing it as “her lovely way of bonding with the bride.”

However, things turned when Prince Harry tagged along for the tiara selection, a noticeable difference from how Harry described the moment in his memoir “Spare,” where he wrote that he was invited.

Tension grew following the meeting when the couple reportedly requested that the tiara, Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau, be sent over so Meghan could practice trying it on, Hardman said.

He added, in what he dubbed “Tiaragate,” that the request upset not only Queen Elizabeth but her dresser and curator, Angela Kelly.

The queen reportedly said, according to one of her aides, “It’s not a toy,” the author wrote.
