James David Vance once referred to former US President Donald Trump as an “idiot”, but on Monday (Jul 15), he became Trump’s running mate for the upcoming presidential election.
Trump said he selected Vance, a Republican US senator, to run on his ticket as Vance was “the person best suited to assume the position of vice president of the United States”. Trump has also complimented Vance’s looks, saying he reminded him of "a young Abraham Lincoln".
A staunch conservative, 39-year-old Vance shares Trump's aggressive approach to politics, and has a conservative stance on issues such as abortion.
He rose to prominence after 2016 when he wrote Hillbilly Elegy, in which he explored the socioeconomic problems confronting his hometown and the cycle of poverty that had entrapped Americans in the Appalachian Mountains, where his mother and her family had their origins.
