Hoosier here, it’s pretty fucking bad. There’s an unease that hangs in the air there, it’s like the buildings themselves are desperate for some unnameable thing you can only feel, it’s hungry for days long gone, hopes once hoped, and dreams once dreamed.
Gary used to be a rust belt metropolis until the decline of US Steel due to restructuring and manufacturing jobs being sent off shore. In 1970 US Steel employed over 30,000 people in Gary, by 1990 it was down to 6,000, and by 2015 down to about 5,000.
In 1994 it was known as the murder capital of the world, so there’s also that fun bit of knowledge. Probably should have led with that.
